Nerds need not apply!

To be honest I'd rather more girls wrote frank, honest blogs about their dating experiences. Though of course with no real names to protect privacy...

I think the golden rule applies here.

Yeah, I wouldn't want any of my failed dates writing that about me, using my real name...

If you wish to hate on typical men as well, simply alert me and I'll be happy to join you.

Yeah, like men who try and control where their girlfriend lives and works.

Luckily in his case this whole ordeal probably works out for him long term, most other Magic players will just be impressed that he actually talked to a REAL GIRL! And I say this as a dude who played Magic hardcore for about 10 years and still occasionally gets together with friends for a little casual drafting ;).

Jon Finkel is legendary. Women should be lining up outside his bedroom.

Well, I agree that Finkel is legendary. Not sure about women lining up for him.

But seriously, if the guy can make hundreds of thousands of dollars doing what he likes, why knock him for it? Would he be more legit if he were winning it playing poker instead of MTG?

I used to play MTG a bit, so I know of Finkel. My nerd claim to fame is I played in the Battletech:TCG world championships one year and made the top 25 (won enough cash to pay for my entire trip to Origins). That experience convinced me of a few things: one, its incredibly hard to be a world champion in something so hideously competitive, and two you have to have an extremely sharp mind to consider both the meta game vesus what others are going to try and do to overcome that, and 3) if you cant dedicate the time/money and brain power it requires to be competitive in that realm, then dont bother.

I actually feel bad about the girl writing the blog more than I do Finkel. I mean how small and pathetic a person are you if you have a need to belittle some guy just trying his best to meet people?

Funny you mention poker... He's also won big money playing blackjack (can't remember if it's in tournaments or at casinos). Somebody even wrote a book about his blackjack playing! Apparently a lot of pro MtG players go on to playing professional poker and blackjack. After that, started his own hedge-fund -- which is why I found the the quote about him dressing like he worked at a hedge fund in the article really, really amusing. It's like, "no, darling, he doesn't work at a hedge fund. He owns the god damn hedge fund." He commented on that on his twitter too, IIRC.

P.S. The guy is absolutely minted, as you can imagine. And, from what I've read, he's also a bit of a player, and has little trouble getting dates or talking to women.

Her article is terrible. Worse than your average post on here. Why did anyone even read her blog let alone why did the Washington post write about it?

This article is so over-the-top, I'm not sure if it's just trolling or sincerity. If it's sincere, it's rather typical dating world hypocrisy. This woman writes for a tech blog and is disavowing nerdiness. I don't know how much more ironically hypocritical you can get. Plus, the chick isn't hot enough to make demands.

Even if she were Claudia Schiffer, she's still in no position to make that kind of demands.

This is getting obnoxious.

There's always exceptions, but in general women find things like MtG immature. I'm not talking 21 year old women, I'm talking at least late 20s. That's around when they want their man to have grown out of that phase.

Just as I'm bothered by frumpy women who live alone with their cats and look a bit disheveled, they're often bothered by guys who are into videogames or other games like MtG, which sucks because when you're exploring online sites like OkCupid that's who you're gonna find :) I find frumpy women, they find geeky guys. It's not like joining a singles club in Manhattan for wealthy Wall Street types, but I swear some of these women join these sites expecting exactly that.

The article itself is a joke though. It's not like I don't see that.

If you know any exceptions, send them my way :) The single women I've met the past few years have been interested mostly in money and social status. It's no wonder they're still single in their 30s when you think about it. Thinking you're too good for some people is a very unattractive quality.

That's because most are not using online dating sites properly. The right way to use them is as a supplement to real-life dating. It's somewhere to go when you're bored and don't have immediate prospects.
