NES World/Regional Maps Requests Thread

Nothing's likely when it comes to NESing...

Besides, the span of IR wavelengths being reflected back by CO2 is almost maxed out. Meaning reduction in exhaust of it will have minimal effect on actual warming. CFC and other gases are ten times more dangerous - if not more. True, humans have had a significant influence in the earth's climate, but that doesn't do us any good unless we manage to influence it to stabilize. Climate change is what kills us and ultimately will destroy our civilization.

There was one for some time ago, with nations and all. You'll find it if you sift through the various map threads.

I found Fëanor's (and I believe that's the only one) with a quick Google search, but I'm looking for something that included the lands of the Seanchan, the Wastes, and the place farther east of the Wastes.

Make it yourself! :p Seriously, if you browse around WoT sites, I'm sure you can come up with a decent map to work with.

Hey, Symphony, when does it look likely that you'll finish the Winkel Tripel map with cities? In the next two weeks, perhaps?

It's done when its done. As much as I love, love, l-l-l-love those b-b-b-blipverts--[DISCONNECT] ...

... Making products for mass consumption, I am currently a wee bit more interested in passing classes and building attosecond pulse lasers. :) Plus, projects for the rest of you are on the whole less important than projects for me on my priority list. ;)

OK, so, here's how this works: I am going to methodically go state by state and country by country getting city GPS coordinates. I am going to periodically post new ones for review. You have until the time the next set gets posted to critique my selections.

Basically, what I look for is as follows:
  • City size. If it's over 50,000 people, it generally goes up, barring other restrictions. Exceptions may be made in sparsely populated areas (such as Alaska) where lower populations such as 30,000 or 25,000 will be accepted.
  • City proximity. If a bigger city is really close to the city in question, that bigger city gets precedence, and is presumed to represent all smaller nearby cities. An example of this is Los Angeles, which includes Hollywood, Inglewood, Anaheim, and so on, but not Oxnard or Santa Ana.
The current listing of cities is for the following states of the United States: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. It is as follows:

It looks something like as follows on the West Coast when displayed in a way I happen to like:

Smaller icons do tend to be better to prevent overlap. Squares are easier to work with at smaller resolutions than circles, and odd numbered sizes are better than even at relating a central point.

What's used on styles that are not mine is up for debate but I assume people will want the standard 4x4 Black Fat Cross, and unless that sentiment changes it will be what's used on the North King variant.

-----

While I'm here, I've also constructed this simply by taking a flat white/blue map with no borders, selecting the white, expanding the selection by a given number of pixels, and filling in the consumed ocean with black. These are 1, 2, and 3 pixel examples:

SamplerThin1.gif
Sampler2.gif
SamplerThick3.gif

You are free to compare this to the other black/white version and decide whether you like it better or not, as the black is in fact all on water, and decide amongst yourselves which of the three looks best. It still requires some cleanup of rivers (they get turned black in the process) and small lakes (many of them become solid black when adhering to keeping all land white), but you all can figure out whether you want a copy of this sort instead of the other or not.

-----

Lastly, I am deciding now what to make output copies of now when all this is done. I have so far decided on:
  • Symphony-style Robinson, 1:35,000,000 scale
  • Symphony-style Winkel-Tripel, 1:35,000,000 scale
  • North King-style Robinson, 1:35,000,000 scale
  • North King-style Winkel-Tripel, 1:35,000,000 scale
These will have plotted modern borders and cities and will be usable right out of the box. If there is popular demand for some other style or scale or projection or whatever else it is that matters to you it had better appear fairly shortly and with vocal support, otherwise I will not bother making it.

No guarantees of maintenance are made on my end for updating, fixing, and/or modifying these maps beyond making them accurate and usable--if you want to add more geospatial data to them, that's your deal.

-----

In summary, your future is being mapped. If you want a say in it, speak up now, or forever hold your peace. Comments of "stick to the old map" will be duly noted and ignored--I have little time for Luddites.

[EDIT] Just so my position is clear here since some people appear confused: all of this will be done, one way or another. What I am offering is for a chance for the rest of you to involve yourselves on some level. Why? Because I don't want to hear any complaints at all when it's done. And if I do, and the person in question didn't raise them during this process, I will gladly respond to that person with a simple "STFU." In short, see the above.

Excellent! I really appreciate the time and energy you're putting into mapping - something at which I have sadly little skill. I personally am in favor of the 1 pixel coastline or 2 at the very most, because the 3 looks sort of ugly and especially on Greenland and fjorded areas seems unusable. And while I'm not too conversant on modern city population (hence the request ;)) - is Victorville too close to another city, because I don't see it on the list and I know it's at least twice as populous as the requirement?

That's exactly the sort of commentary I want. I'll add Victorville.

Also, since it is North King's style, if he (or another one of you?) wants to set up a poll on the pixels, feel free, since I have a feeling you'll be at each other's throats about it.

Symph, if you are doing it that way for canada as well, of all the wiki population lists, THIS one would be the most useful. The other ones either don't have major places, and the largest cities includes Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, etc., all of which should be represented by Toronto.

Symphony, the consuming of the ocean by the black looks really excellent; I believe that's what I usually go for in this instance. Two pixels would be how I prefer it, of course.

The map looks cool Sym, though I find the isolated and very thing fjords inside of Greenland and other coasts make it look a bit messy and stippled. Not that it can't be easily remedied.

Awesome! I vote for 1 pixel borders, but can live with 2.

I agree, 1 pixel borders look best, and two are good. Now that it is the sea, not the land, it is all good.

Aye, black in the sea instead of on land is much better. I still prefer the 1px version, but the 2px version doesn't look too bad now.

I dub it North King-style because it is his. I'll be producing 2px unless the rest of you convince him otherwise. ;) Some variety is good but endless variety is hard to maintain.
