Nation Background: Scotland, much like Ireland, has reclaimed its independence during the first two English Civil Wars, and with French help. While Ireland became a parliamentary monarchy, Scotland instead became a republic, dominated by the Lowland cities, causing some tensions with the Highlanders (the climax being in 1717-8, with the unsuccesful Highlander Rising). In foreign policy, Scotland has maintained a policy of neutrality, although during the Third English Civil War (1699-1702) there was much talk of intervention on the French/Royalist side. Scotland has recently undergone some centralizing reforms.

NOTHING WAS EVER HERE!

AND DAS, I STILL CAN"T SEE ANY OF THEM! :p

We accept. We need to solify our old alliance in order to protect ourselves from our aggressive neighbours. Sweden can not be permitted to grow so strong again and threaten our independence. An alliance between our two nations will serve us both well.

OOC: First story in this nes!!! To a specific person, ur PM will be answered tomorrow. I need sleep :)

The water gently flowed. None could suspect that little trickle of water began the greatest river in China. For hundreds of years since the Tang Dynasty, life had been nearly the same for the people of China. Dynasties came and went, but that meant truly little to the poor peasants toiling in China’s vast fields. Time was when children grew up, became parents, grandparents, and finally died. Normally nothing “dramatic” or “exciting” happened in their lives and they were content.

The rain falls down… The ants scurry for shelter those that can’t reach it in time are drowned by the massive rain drops. The rain begins lightly nothing more then a slight nuisance in the beginning turning into a danger as the rain proceeded to get harder. Such common knowledge to even peasants had a meaning to the High and Mighty of Qing China.

The Europeans were like rain. When they first came in the guise of the Portuguese they were nothing but humble merchants ready to kowtow to the Dragon Throne for the right to trade for a few bolts of silk. Then the sky was turning dark. But then the Portuguese were followed by the Spanish, proud and haughty to rival any Confucian Officials who refused to kowtow and demanded to be acknowledged as equals.

The Spanish were thought to be unique, one of a kind. The general thought was that the majority of so called Europeans would be like the Portuguese. The rain had begun a light shower by then. When Chinese armies steamrolled over Burma and Annam and reached the fabled nation of Siam, more Europeans were waiting for them. The French had established a protectorate over Siam. They were like the Spanish, just like the Spanish.

Then there were the Russians and the Baikal War. The Russians had been the only European Nation to back their words with large forces able to strike at Qing China. They were formidable foes indeed giving the Qing Banners more difficulty then any other enemies in the history of the Dynasty. The rain was drizzling now. The writing was visible on the wall. The captured Russian weaponry was better then the weapons used by the Qing Army a fact that brought reality to the Court.

The Court deliberated, argued and debated. The truth was apparent the Europeans were equal if not more advanced then the Chinese. The truth… was hard to swallow for the Confucian Officials with their heads still in the days of the Tang. But reality packs a painful punch. Reality cannot be avoided. The irony of it all was that the leading officials for reforms would be the conservative backers of Cixi had the space time continuum not been tampered with by the versatile polar bears. Thinking just because they’re all white they were better then the Pandas…

But no, the Pandas had found a powerful backer with a fanaticism to lead China to glory and power. The rain had ended, and the sun was emerging. China shall go on, kicking and screaming if needed.

And as the Great Lord of All Chinese Peoples looked upon the scene, he smiled. The Court of Emperor Qianlong would be able to deal with the Europeans in an efficient manner unlike the courts of his successors. Who knows, perhaps the Sino-Japanese War and the Treaties of Humiliation would never come to be. Perhaps one day, the first man upon the moon would be Chinese… Ahh yes, and to get rid of the man named Heshen…

Nation Background: 17th century was a tumultuous one for Poland. First, the Union of Poland-Lithuania collapsed due to the Russian victory in the War of Lithuanian Succession. Then religious strife intensified, with the initial triumph of the Protestants, backed by their co-religionist king of Sweden and Poland, Gustav II. That Gustav went on to destroy the Holy Roman Empire and to found a Protestant Empire, which collapsed with his death, ending the Union of Sweden-Poland as well. Poland briefly became a separate kingdom again under a native dynasty, but soon fell into the chaos of religious wars that only ended in 1685, when Russo-Lithuanian forces were stopped on the Vistula by the then-General Wladyslaw Wittlin. The short-lived republic that followed was eventually overthrown by the same Wittlin, now a Marshall. Wittlin has established a military dictatorship, concentrated the power in his hands and defeated Frenchmen, Bavarians, Turks and Russians alike, forging a new empire with sword and feather alike. He left behind himself the Union of Krakow, a Polono-Germano-Hungarian republic. Threatened from all directions, Eastern Germany, Poland and Hungary remained united, covering each other's back, and combining their armies to defeat all foreign threats. While the Poles and the Hungarians dominated the politics and the military, the Germans largely took over economy and culture, and recently took over the country in a coup of an election. That caused some separatism in Poland and Hungary, but most people there still are too afraid of their neighbours to secede.

yay, nothing left anymore... :(

Nation Background: The lesser Catholic German states have, for the most part, sided with the Holy Roman Emperor in the Twenty Years War, and paid the price. Nonetheless, Bavaria - the largest of those states - became for Gustav II of Sweden what Saxony has been for Charlemagne. To his death, Gustav II, for all his victories couldn't fully subdue the Catholic South, especially as his former French allies involved themselves ever-more in the German matters. After Gustav's death, Franco-Bavarian forces expelled the remaning Swedish garrisons, and since then the two countries were allied. Towards the end of the 17th century, August I of Bavaria managed to forge a coalition of southern Catholic states, and in 1693 forged a personal union, the so-called Augsburg League, whose principalities were quite autonomous but still were obviously dominated by Bavaria. This League soon came to conflict Brunswick and its northern sphere of influence, and with French encouragement the Augsburgers attacked the Protestants of Central Germany, beginning the War of the Augsburg League as it was challenged by Spain, its Italian allies, several other Protestant German states and eventually Marshall Wittlin's Poland. In the end, the Augsburgers were forced to back down, but the League itself survived and has nurtured revanchist dreams since then.

OOC: das, does the Size rule apply to military spending (Units, Training, Leadership) as well, or just other stats? IC:

TO: Kingdom of Brunswick, Republic of Sweden
FROM: Union of Krakow

Although the Protestant Empire has crumbled, those who sought its destruction remain, and despite its fall these entities continue to pose a constant threat to all our nations, as we are the inheritors of its glory. It is therefore only logical that we stand together with one another against those who would seek our defeat individually, for divided we might easily fall - as one, we might blaze a trail together toward a greater destiny. Will Brunswick and Sweden stand with their brother nation of Krakow in an alliance, that we all might endure and overcome together? We extend our goodwill and friendship to you, our brethren, in the hope that it might be accepted and reciprocated.

Just the other stats. I considered expanding it to the military as well, but not sure yet.

Damn, I'm just SURE someone reserved Spain. Oh well. I'll take Sweden if someone made a reservation earlier and desperately wants this nation.

It was thlayli, and he desperately wants spain ;)

TO: His Imperial Majesty Emperor Qianglong of the Chinese
FROM: His Royal Highness King Julien-François I of the French

It has come to our attention the Chinese displeasure at France's rightful protectorate over the Kingdom of Siam. We understand that the Chinese nation feels threatened by our projection of power, yet we feel oblidged to console you by stating that we have no current conflicts with you or your people. Therefore we propose a 5-year NAP. However, violate our territorial integrity and we will respond in kind.

Nation Background: Grown out of the Irish rebel confederacies of the 1640s, the original independent Ireland wouldn't have survived if not for the English Civil Wars (during which it emerged) and the French intervention. The initially rather divided country was united around a king kindly provided by the Bourbons, and in the Second English Civil War (in 1647-1653) it drove back a Cromwellian invasion, not without French help again. Since then, Ireland remained in close alliance with France until recently when it drifted towards neutrality. In the last few years, the king begun reassessing his power, with the support of the reactionary faction in the Oireachtas (the Parliament), which provoked a rise of radical republican sentiments.

Though it lost some ground to the Turks, the Republic's alliances with Spain and the Papacy have allowed it to survive thus far. When Turkey makes one wrong step, Venice will probably exploit it... unless it decides to turn on its former allies and try to unify Italy instead.
