Hey Daft, I have a question about the possible NPCs that may appear. Would they follow the same rules/restrictions as players? By that, I mean do they have limited actions points?
Last Saturday afternoon, I ended up having a pixel art session that was only slightly related to NESCraft. I then went out and drunk lots of whiskey in the evening.
Sunday was a hangover day, completely killed my creativity!
The week was fairly busy. I snuck in a few sessions, but spent a fair few hours just fiddling around with Illustrator and Photoshop, trying to figure out the easiest way of doing things - the main map is now in Illustrator, which makes it much easier to handle the sh*tload of sprites on the map. However as a vector app, it doesn't allow direct editing of pixels, for which I still need Photoshop running. It turns out that copying from Photoshop to Illustrator is not that straight forward if you want to preserve transparent edges of a 'sprite' (no solid background). Illustrator can open Photoshop images with all the layers intact, but it is a little slow doing so. I figured out that creating a small Photoshop image with just a few needed sprites as a clipboard is the way to go - it can be rapidly reloaded in Illustrator, once I've saved it in Photoshop with new sprites drawn.
Jobhunting and gym sessions consumed a lot of time this week. That combined with catching up on sleep - actually a couple of 11-hour sessions in bed, recovering from last week when I burned the candle at both ends to get a freelance animation project completed (its really not a good lifestyle, hence the jobhunting). Thursday night was again completely consumed by freelance work I needed to finish at short notice for a client, combined with an early start on Friday (today) for an appointment, led to a severe lack of sleep. Nonetheless, I've put a few more hours in today.
Currently only around 1/3 of players are updated. I realise that is not good going for a full week. However, I'm still confident of getting the update done this weekend.
Long term, to keep this alive, I think things will have to get short and sharp - I've consistently failed at that as a mod, but I'm determined to do it this time. So in future you can expect fewer details about your AP spending, and fewer little details on the map. But for this update at least, I'm content to take time to write another 'story' update. I'd really like this NES to last a long time, getting as far as tribes and perhaps city states. I think it would be nice to be able to look back in detail at the lives of the first people in the world over the first few updates...
Hey Daft, I have a question about the possible NPCs that may appear. Would they follow the same rules/restrictions as players? By that, I mean do they have limited actions points?
NPC's would follow the same principle, but they may be abstracted somewhat. Especially as and when there are large crowds of them. In general, they will be less interesting than human players, except perhaps for a few NPC characters I may want to stand out.
Indeed, since you don't really have the chance to do anything interesting, all you can do is poop your pants Also, there's no guarantee you will survive your first turn. It seems to make sense to only sort out players for children when they reach a playable age - at 1 day old, equates to roughly ~7 years, you will get an AP or two to play with.
This day, strangely, seems to last longer than usual, especially the night - a bright full moon hangs in the sky, seeming to glow with a slight purple tint. Strange, restless energies are at work in the darkness. Meanwhile, despite many hardships, the fledgling human tribes are slowly growing in strength...

Immaculate, Lord of Elves, North King, Seon
Spoiler:
The day begins with drama for North King and Seon. The Big Black Cat presses its attack at the cave entrance; North King's spearpoint is partly shattered, partly embedded in the creature's limb, before a barrage of stones from Seon convince it to back off. In the aftermath of the life-and-death encounter, North King and Seon share a passionate moment in the shelter of the cave - Seon finding herself seduced by his Artistic and Charming nature.
All four humans together and settle down to work in the morning. Immaculate re-plants and expands the garden plots; Seon sharpens some new Stone Tools; North King starts expanding the Dwelling using leftover timbers; and Lord of Elves, despite being heavily pregnant with Immac's child, goes about the heavy work of chopping wood and breaking rocks. With the planting done, Immaculate goes to meditate and pray at mid-day. The others remain busy - Seon finishes up the new shelter, making sure it will be strong enough to withstand another storm, while North King returns to the cave to mine some of the glowing rocks.
In the afternoon, Immaculate finds North King to organise a hunting trip. Immaculate takes the remaining spear, while North King picks up one of the axes and attempts to scare prey towards Immac's spearpoint. With the Big Cat on the prowl, the duo stick to the known trails of the western bamboo, which is already re-growing following the recent fire, and has tender shoots that have attracted deer and boar. Hunting as a team will take some practise, however; today the only catch is a large lizard. But combined with leftover meat, coconuts from the beach, and herbs picked up by Immaculate, there is a decent meal for everyone today.
Meanwhile, Lord of Elves has entered labour, with Seon on hand to offer moral support. A healthy baby boy is born just as the hunters return from the forest. The newborn remains mercifully calm and serene, allowing the tribe a decent night's rest in the new longhouse. North King is inspired to stir in the night to sit by the beach for a while, as playful Dolphins jump above the sparkling moonlit waves. He notes that the Blue Ore he mined from the cave seems to be glowing more brightly.
The morning brings a new surprise: a juvenile Paraceratherium, one of the giant creatures of the forest, seems to have lost its family, and seems to be attracted to the shape of the expanded Dwelling, repeatedly nudging the walls with its powerful head; though a youngster, it is already frighteningly big and powerful.
Immaculate has 6AP today, feeling the benefit of continued good diet, plenty of rest, and spiritual practise. North King has 5AP. Lord of Elves has 4AP as she recovers from pregnancy. Seon has 4 AP, and feels that she too is going to be brining new life into this world. There are now three newly-re/planted garden plots, and at least 1 AP total should be invested to keep them on course for producing food.
Today you go fishing, and have plenty of luck. You land two large fish and several smaller ones. You also have a close encounter with a large bear - but on this occasion, the bear backs off first. Before returning home to cook and eat your catch, you pause at your monument to worship and thank the spirits.
You eat very well, fully making up for your hunger, despite having left some of your catch by the monument as an offering - and you still have leftovers for tomorrow. Though the night is rather cold and windy, you get a comfortable nights rest, safe and warm within your Stone Dwelling. You have vivid dreams, seeing yourself flying with spirits across the land.
At dawn, you awake to find strange glowing orbs dancing around your monument, just barely visible in the morning sun - Are you still dreaming? You sense that you may have helped to create some kind of doorway between realms...
You have 5AP, 2x Large Fish Skins, 1x Raw Fish Meat, 2x Bones, 1x Stone Pickaxe, 1x Stone Spear and Deerskin Clothes.

Spoiler:
Herobrine and Merciary: Your children mature rapidly over the course of the day, but are still very vulnerable. The hut provides much needed shelter. Herobrine ventures outside briefly, intending to plant more crops, but is disturbed by a lone wolf prowling nearby - friendly as it may be, she decides to return to the hut and make sure the twins are kept safe. Merciary, meanwhile, is out on the hunt, and succeeds in bringing back another boar - a particularly fat boar this time; a good meal of roasted meat and fat is shared by the growing family. Merciary also finds time to tend the garden patches, harvesting more vegetables, and collecting the Dire Boar skins that had been mysteriously dropped nearby.
At night, Merciary sleeps outside to give his family enough room in the cramped hut; the night is fairly mild, and he has plenty of animal skins to keep him warm. The lone wolf continues to linger nearby, and Merciary's ranger instincts tell him someone else is not far away to the south.
At dawn the family is safe, well rested and well fed, with some vegetables left over for today; Merciary has 5AP and Herobrine has 4AP, having only just recovered from her twin birth. Both Female Child and Male Child have 2 free AP each (to be spent on trying to learn skills and/or helping with practical tasks). Two garden patches remain with some vegetables left, both may be harvested for 1AP combined, if the approaching Rhino does not munch them first...
SpoilerWolfhaven Inventory :
Skins: 2x Dire Boar (very tough), 1x Boar, 1x Fish (weak, very waterproof)
Materials: 1x Stone Blocks, 1x String (Sinew)
Wearable: 1x Backpack (Merciary), 1x Wicker & Boarhide Shield, 2x Fishbone ornaments (Merciary, Herobrine)
Tools: Stone Tools, Pickaxe, Axe, Hoe, 2x Spear
Food: 2x Vegetables
Misc: numerous Bones
Justo: you begin the day by crafting a fine goatskin backpack, in which to store your leftover meat and goat skull. At midday, the wolves are still hanging around the slain Dire Boar; you make no attempt to reclaim your kill. You decide instead to make a new stone spearhead, unfortunately this involves a detour to pick up some suitable rocks, taking you south of the nearby lake. As you chisel your spearpoint, sitting by the water's edge, you have a close encounter with a large snake - you are unsure how dangerous it is, but it soon slithers away again into the undergrowth.
With your new spear in hand, you head out hunting in the afternoon, aiming roughly north, where you saw fire in the distance last night. You track several Red Deer through woods and meadows, but fortune is not with you today, as the wind turns against you and the wary prey stays one step ahead. As night falls, you are still a short distance from your destination. You rest up in some trees for the night, the night air is chilly but not too cold for you. Again you see firelight twinkling not far away.
You've been eating raw goat meat over the past two days, it has left you feeling bloated and unwell today; you do not especially feel like eating more. You have however gathered 1x Apples on your travels yesterday. You also have 1x Backpack, 1x Goat Skull, 1x Stone Tools and 1x Stone Spear. You have 3AP.
Milarqui: as night falls, the full moon seems to empower you further. You find and grasp the axe that was once wielded by your human self; a life that is now nothing more than a faint echo of confused thoughts in your mind. But you are aware of a growing human tribe nearby - you feel strangely protective of them, and you keep your ethereal senses alert for anything that might threaten them. You return to shelter as the sun rises.
Optical
Well rested and fed, you have a relaxing morning at the cave entrance. But at least one large bear is prowling nearby. Determination is building inside of you; to claim your place as the strongest creature around. So you go forth to hunt a bear, armed with a simple spear and stone blade.
You fail the ambush the bear. With its keen sense of smell, it picks you up some distance away. It stands its ground as you approach in an open meadow. You have no choice but a frontal attack. A flurry of blows ensues; powerful claws shred your sheepskin and cut grooves into your chest. Though your spear is shattered, your warrior instincts kick in, and you quickly land a mortal blow to the beast's neck, getting in close with your stone blade. The bear promptly bleeds to death as you dash back and catch your breath.
It was a rather large bear. You have landed a treasure-trove of hide, meat, fat, bones and claws, all of which may prove useful. Before night falls, you have enough time to butcher the kill and haul the valuable parts back to the safety of the cave, and cook some of the meat. You then get some sleep, watched over by the friendly wildcat. Your wounds are rather serious, but your hardy nature sees you through the night, as wolves howl outside.
You awake with 3AP, well rested but in some pain. You have gathered 2x Bearskin (much tougher than linen), 1x Bones, 2x Bear Claws (tool or weapon), 1x Bear Meat leftovers, 2x Bear Fat (will last longer than meat before rotting), 1x Bear Skull (decoration or armour?), and 1x Giant Mouse Pelt. You also have 2x Stone Tools after your spear was broken. 2x Small Traps and Nintz's former Spear are also nearby. Today is fairly cold again, and your shredded sheepskin offers little protection. You have gained the Braveheart trait.
Secret Scribe
Today is rather uneventful. The mountain continues to spew clouds of steam, and a river of lava continues to crash into the sea, but the deep rumbling seems to have subsided. Your morning is thus spent foraging in the vicinity, not straying to far from your Totem. You have the fortune to find a bloom of shellfish on the shore to the south, but there is a strong sea breeze against your skin and it is uncomfortable to linger there too long - still chapped and sore from your recent journey out to sea. You have your spear at hand, but the only dangerous moment is when you encounter a large and angry-looking Auroch (giant wild cattle) in woods to the east. You give it a wide birth for now.
In the afternoon you craft a stone axe, then settle down to rest in the evening, with your fire for comfort and watched over by your Totem, which seems to glow in the moonlight; you sense heightened energies flowing all around, but you are left undisturbed in the night and rest well. You awake with 4AP, and still have some Pink Berries gathered from the island in the west. Stone Tools are also in your Backpack as you carry your Stone Spear and Axe. Your Raft remains on the beach to the north.

Spoiler:
tuxedohamm and TerrisH: While Terrish busily eats and gathers berries, tuxedohamm meditates; soon getting lost in a trance, she feels herself drawing energy from the wilderness. Around midday there is a close encounter with a hungry bear, but it backs away after a brief stare at tuxedohamm. You are free to eat your fill of berries before moving on, taking a couple of handfulls with you.
The afternoon is spent travelling; you are heading towards a source of billowing steam you have seen in the east. As you approach, you realise this is a bubbling lake of hot, sticky tar. Various animals seem to have met their fate here, judging by the bones scattered around. As night falls you find a wood to shelter in nearby. TerrisH is busy creating a large spear from a large tusk and the hoe you have carried with you, while tuxedohamm weaves a crude blanket from the long grass, snacking on the seeds as she does so. You both work long into the cold, moonlit night, wary of large beasts prowling in the twilight; fortunately these seem to be herbivores. tuxedohamm can also sense other human beings fairly close by, both to the north and south - as well as something familiar, yet very strange lurking in the west...
As dawn breaks, you are both very tired. TerrisH is feeling the effects of prolonged cold and could do with a good rest at the end of this day; he has 3AP. Meanwhile tuxedohamm has 4AP thanks to her spiritual and hardy nature. You are both hungry again and crave something other than fruit. You now have 1x Linen, 1x Tusk Lance, and 1x Ornamental Stone Tools. Hills and mountains are all around, but you see a range of especially large, snow-capped, distant mountains towering over the horizon in the north.
* TerrisH has entered manhood, choosing the Explorer trait.
Lopaz: Today begins with your tree-shelter under attack by a very large and ferocious Tiger, which proves to be a good climber. For a few frantic moments, you have to defend yourself at close range by swinging your axe. Eventually gaining some breathing space, you cut some hefty branches to use as ammunition, and this seems to work, causing the Tiger to lose its grip and ultimately give up the attack. It slinks away again into the undergrowth, leaving you free to go foraging in the afternoon.
You pick up some salad leaves, herbs, seeds, and some shellfish from the beach, just enough to keep you going. You also stumble upon a large, beautifully rounded chunk of amber lying on the shore. You are able to cover a large area today, getting a better sense of your surroundings - a cave with interesting greenish rocks lies to the north. At night you return to your tree, however all the chopping has left it rather bedraggled and lacking in cover. Though you are safe from other prowling beasts, the night is uncomfortably cold, and with a strong breeze raking the treetops, you do not sleep well.
From your vantage point in the light of morning, you think you see some kind of red-haired creature moving through trees in the north. The air is especially clear today, and you have a spectacular view of hills and mountains stretching from the south-west to the north-east, with smaller mountains rising from islands in the south-east. You have 3AP, a Stone Axe and 1x Amber, as well as 1x Timber blocks from your efforts yesterday. You note that the nearby bushes have bloomed with juicy berries.
Angst: Drifting as a ghost across the land, you seem lost in a fog, barely in touch with the physical realm. But you are still aware of your family, and have the urge to do something to protect them... It is then you stumble upon the large Moose you once fought; still reeling from the wounds you inflicted; it is close to death itself, and its energy is fading. You are able to posses the large creature with your own energy. But under the light of a full moon, something more strange occurs - energy seems to rush forward from the twilight itself, healing, blending you and the Moose together into a new being... But now the dawn causes you pain. You must rest in shelter, waiting for the night to fall again.
Angst has become a... Demigod?

Patchy, ChineseWarlord, thomas.berubeg
The three of you seem to have found a common bond, for now at least, to survive in this dangerous landscape. In the early morning you move together to the rocks and trees in the west, to make a new set of tools. This is where ChineseWarlord was attacked... But it seems there is safety in numbers, as no predator dares to attack your group today.
ChineseWarlord is healing fast, but still in some pain (after being grazed by a Sabre Tooth) and takes it easy for the rest of the day, making a meat-drying rack over the fire at the cave. Meanwhile, the women are out hunting in the northern hills, wielding newly-made Stone Spears, and their efforts seem blessed - both thomas and Patchy return with slain goats on their backs, after herding their prey into a natural bottleneck. The survivors scatter, and hunting will not be as easy next time, but for today there is more than enough meat to go around. The new drying rack is put to use as some meat is smoked and kept for later. Patchy, being more energetic than the rest, also finds time to chisel some stone blocks before night falls.
As if the full moon had not had enough effect on the local wildlife, the smell of cooked meat attracts lions to the cave entrance. The three of you take it in turns to act as lookout, and Patchy's slingshot proves useful for deterring the felines. Roars and other frightening sounds fill the valley until dawn. The full moon seems to affect humans too; thomas takes Warlord for a romantic moment during the night.
Nonetheless, each of you manage to get some rest, and all of you face the new day with 4AP. ChineseWarlord is not fully healed, but his Hardy nature ensures he can keep up with the others. thomas feels especially hungry today...
You avoid confrontation with the rowdy giant apes this morning, and quickly leave to go fishing in the river to the north. At first you have little luck, but persistence pays; by mid-day, you have speared several good-sized fish, which seem to be swarming upriver in large numbers. There is more than enough for you and for the bears who are also fishing in the shallows nearby. Today you also notice some unusual, shiny golden rocks at the water's edge.
As you climb back up to your camp, you find the apes have trashed your tent; it will need to be re-crafted from your deerskin and linen. For now though, you are content to cook your fish, and snooze through the hot afternoon sun.
In the cool of the evening, you go to fetch sticks and stones to make a Pickaxe. By the time you return, you find your leftover fish has been stolen by some unknown culprit(s). At least you finish your Pickaxe, and end the day well-fed and well-rested. You have 4AP, 1x Linen Clothes, 1x Linen, 1x Rabbit Pelt,1x Deerskin, 1x Antlers, 1x Stone Spear, 1x Stone Tools, 2x Bones, and 1x Stone Pickaxe.
J.K. Stockholme
You are feeling energised and ready for the hunt, and today puts you fully to the test. You track a group of Oryx, large horned beasts. They outpace you, but only in short bursts - you keep up the chase, gradually singling out one victim, closing in as you circle across the dry plains and endure passing duststorms. Finally, the prey is exhausted, and collapses even before you strike the killing blow.
The hunt lasted long into the mid-day heat, you work as quickly as you can to butcher your kill. You take away the best meat before a pride of lions shows up, retreating to the shade of some nearby pine trees. Now a long way from your starting point, with no way to carry everything back at once, you decide to stay here and make a new campfire, postponing plans to build a tent; you manage to eat well, and then rest as well as you can, with the noise of big cats and giant apes roaming beneath the full moon.
Though well fed and rested, you awake feeling somewhat sore and sunburnt from yesterday's efforts. As the lions pass on, you are able to gather up 1x Oryx Hide (fairly tough), 2x Oryx Horns, and are still holding on to 1x Meat leftovers. You notice an abundance of fruit and grapes nearby, though horrifying Giant Wasps seem to be attracted to the latter. You have 3AP.
Ninja Dude
You have a fairly uneventful, but productive day. Morning is spent crafting some fine Stone Tools. Later, as you venture to the woods in the north-east to gather sticks, you encounter the local wolf pack out on the grasslands. Your offering of goat meat is accepted, and they leave you alone as they squabble over it. You snack on wild grass seeds as you walk. You return to your cave and build a Totem nearby, binding sticks, rocks and goat skull together with some scraps of linen. As night falls, you again stay up without sleeping, crafting a backpack from your goat skin in the fire light, while munching on raw carrot. Thanks to your Crafty nature, you find enough left over hide to cobble together a handy belt.
You have not properly slept for several days. As dawn breaks, you finally fall asleep; you will not wake up until mid-day today, and will have only 2AP, though you will not need to rest again today. It is rather sunny and warm. You now have 1x Stone Tools, 1x Stone Spear, 1x Backpack, 1x Linen and 1x Belt.
Thlayi
Today is rather sunnier and warmer than before, a blessing for your frozen skin. You spend the morning finishing your Bolas, then trek down the mountain, heading south-east, towards where you have seen deer roaming. Hunger guides you on. You manage to stalk a group of deer, but your first attempt at throwing your Bolas does nothing more than frighten them away. So you settle upon a target of opportunity: a lonely sheep. You successfully entangle it with your Bolas, and then it is a simple matter to deliver a killing blow with your hammer. It may not be a deer, but it is your first decent meal, and it is easy enough to carry back to the cave - not to mention, its wool will provide much needed insulation.
During the night, however, you get little rest. A large Black Bear repeatedly probes the cave entrance, attracted by the smell of cooked meat. It takes some well-aimed rocks to keep it away, but it doesn't wander far. Then, as the full moon reaches its peak, you hear some terrifying rasping and rattling sounds from deeper within the cave... This state of siege lasts until dawn, when you at last feel safe enough to take a few steps outside. It is then you have another surprise - a large bipedal figure, armed with some kind of club, wandering to the east of the mountain... Is that another person like yourself?
You have 3AP, well-fed but exhausted. You have Stone Tools, a Bone Maul, a Bolas, a Sheep Skin worn loosely over your body, and have found time to craft some Rabbit Fur Shoes.
Everblack
Alone and unarmed, stuck in a tree, with Giant Hyenas menacingly clawing at the trunk below... You bravely compose yourself and meditate, praying to the spirits that you may be left in peace. It is not long before the hyenas wander off, leaving you to eat the last of the fruit amongst the branches.
In the afternoon, you do not quite know what to do with yourself. You pick up a sizeable stick for defence, and take a short wander around, not finding anything especially edible - and wary of getting too close to the river and its Crocodiles and Hippos. As the sun sets and the full moon rises, you return to the tree you started in, contemplating your existence for some time before settling to sleep - though disturbed by biting insects and roar of animals nearby. At dawn you have 3AP, and feel hungry again - preferably, for something other than fruit.
qoou
Today you are inspired to build a stone cairn at the lakeside, which is completed by mid-day. You spend the afternoon in meditation by the cairn amidst a constant background of Giant Flamingo calls. You go foraging as the sun sets, and manage to find some small bird's eggs to eat - it is enough to keep your strength up. The full moon now casts an ethereal glow across the steaming lake, and you are wary of strange noises in the twilight. You continue to forage carefully by the shore, but find nothing substantial to eat. You keep close to the warm vapours as the night is bitterly cold. Finally you have a few moments rest by the cairn, before facing dawn once again.
You have 3AP today, and you have 1x Linen, carrying a stick and a rock, and are a little tired and hungry. You note that the nearby bushes have sprouted juicy berries. Great mammoths continue to roam nearby, and you are also aware of a large black bear wandering the meadows in the south-west...
Now – Day 9 Begins
Want to go exploring way off the horizon? Or enter interdimensional portal (Omega)? Or confront a strange bipedal traveller (Thlayli)? I will now do the promised mini-updates in these cases, perhaps text-only, but allowing you to spend the rest of your AP depending on what you find.
The next turn will have a 3/4 moon (paranormal activity remains elevated).
Resisting the temptation to call the Angst-tuxedohamm-TerrisH-Lopaz region 'Moosemurdered'
---
Sooo I think I've shared enough thoughts for now; feel free to send orders as usual, share thoughts, or just a post to check in for now and let me know who's still interested in playing. I am thinking through how to make this more update-able, and open to ideas, but changes are most likely to be to the level of detail in the map and writeup rather than player input.
Before the hiatus, Herobrine's children had been claimed by Arrow Gamer (male twin) and Nintz (female twin) - still interested?
Lord of Elves's son can be claimed, but cannot do anything for the first turn.
Seon and thomas.berubeg are expecting children, but they need to A: Survive another turn and B: give birth successfully. I may at this point make all future births NPC's, if enough of the former players are still active.
Now to the denizens of Wolfhaven, my suggestions for this turn:
With the most AP I figure I can go out and bring back needed supplies (meat/wood) as well as help out with random tasks/dealing with the rhino. (speaking of which how do we want to deal with it?)
Herobrine I'd recommend nothing but farming. I know this is boring but farming is going to be our main source of food as I'm likely to hunt everything at this pace.
As for the children they can either help farm or help build right now.
Justo if you care to join us building and defending the area might be the biggest help right now.
Building priorities:
Wall around the farming patches, unless the rhino can be dealt with even then still needed
Most likely more farms, can never have too much food
Expanding the hut to hold 5+ people
Everblack order
A1: Head down south to the stone near the dog(I think it a dog?)
A2: One their use the stone to craft a Stone Spear
A3: Aggressively fight the dog with my spear if it till around (I hope he still their and that I win against it)
