Description: The Herbaneraria no longer relies on plankton to survive its youth. The species fills a moistened silk sack with insects and attatches it to the side of the tree it is in full of developing eggs. The youth live off of the insects until ready to emerge. Adults have been known to consume plant life during this time to help compensate for the decrease in their own insect intake.
(They deposit the insects and forget about the "nest." The plant eating is mostly done while collecting insects to seal up. Once the nest is sealed and attached though, it no longer adds more insects.)
The teacher sat at the front of the room, writing down notes on the overhead as he gave his lecture about the ancient Yellow Bathysplates. The class was bored out of its mind as the teacher droned on about how it used chemosynthesis to make food for itself and how it accomplished the other major life functions. It was fairly obvious by his monotoned and unenthusiastic voice that this was even boring to the teacher.
Some students were trying to listen and take notes. One eager person in the front row quickly jotted down each line of notes that the teacher put up. She sat up straight and seemed full of energy. Everyone else, however, either struggled to keep along, like one male student in the back who's head bobbed back and forth in a desperate attempt to stay awake, or had just given up on the lecture all together and started doing other stuff. One student was working on homework for the next class. Another was blatantly texting to her friends, not even trying to hide it. The teacher saw, but ignored it. He left himself a mental note that maybe he'll report her. Probably not.
It was only ten minutes now until the end of the period, and lunch. The teacher was talking about how the Yellow Bathysplate probably didn't have any sort of nervous system. That it was probably also a filter feeder. He went on to note the root-like "anchor" structures at the base of the tower, probably used to hold the organism in place. By this point, only little-miss-eager was still taking notes. The kid in the back of the class had finally lost his war with boredom and fallen asleep, a slight stream of drool seeping out of the corner of his open mouth. The texting girl was still going at it, at ninety words per minute, and the rest of the class was getting restless and was now talking very loudly. The teacher had long since given up any hope of actually being able to leave some knowledge in the student's brains, and kept going on with his lecture even though all of the class's chatter was drowning him out.
The bell rang. "You're homework for tonight is to read pages-" the class was already out of the door before the teacher could finish what the assignment was. "Screw it, what ever." he grumbled to himself, as he headed off to the teacher's lounge for a quick smoke and a hit of vodka.

I downloaded Freemind to take a better look at it, but I don't have the required Java runtime stuff and its refusing to download
Hmm, maybe I was too critical of that.
@The Farow, its OK, as I said, we can assume each creature is immune to its own poison. I was just thinking out loud
@Kol.7, no renaming allowed, except if I made a big mistake. Just don't bank on anything surviving I imagined the original Valios Polykalios being a lower-maintenance treeborne hunter, with the Shadow Kakliea at the top, and no room in between for the original Kakleia .
BTW, I don't want to discourage 'brain power'. I wont artificially prevent the rise of a sentient species - we can have a mass extinction event as it trashes the planet before leaving for outer space
I was just pointing out that it works best in combination with other things. Like humans have speech, social and parenting behaviour, useful hands, etc.
@erez87, thanks for sharing those ideas. Of course I cant make any guarantees about what will actually evolve...

Mischief?
A prime Example would be the armtupler line, way way back. it actualy acchived a civilization in the middle of a mass extenction event. it was to large to survived the event compleatly, but it hung on long after all the other large species died out.

Iggy, could you perhaps upload the current mindmap file you have of the evolution tree? I might be able to turn it into an image. It doesn't need to be high quality and it wouldn't be tough to tape the bits and pieces together.
