Hard to tell without an image, you'd have to locate the sources of unhapiness and see how you can fight them, most of the time there is no instant solution outside of carefully placing your citizens/specialist to try to fight off the unhappiness.
I'd go city by city and see what's causing it, and build your buildings acordingly. If it's a general thing like all your cities are lacking science, gold or culture you'll have to go for a tech that helps.
You can also pop lock most if not all of your cities (except puppet'd ones) until you get the happiness under control. There are also a variety of polices you can pick up that help with happiness.

In my new 8-6-2 game, I somehow got into a happiness death spiral as Assyria. I was hovering around 0-20 happiness for about 200 turns, when suddenly it went to -10, then -20, -42 after I took a city, and -52 after I completed a courthouse in that city. I've been doing nothing in all my cities but making buildings to try to alleviate this for 40-odd turns, but it just seems to get worse. Any ideas?

Hover over the sad face icon and tell us what the sources of unhappiness are. The solution might be fairly obvious from there.

Maybe this is a new mechanic.. but assuming you have below 20 happiness, an industrial or later neutral event that could happen to help with excess unhappiness caused by excess migration is "mass migration":
1. Prevent the migration by paying for improved conditions (-gold +happiness for 30 turns)
2. Let the people migrate (-1 or 2 pop in least happy cities)
3. Help the people migrate (lose 3 or 4 pop in least happy cities, gain gold and happiness from international aid)

Is this something we can easily fix (with a text editor) or is it in the dll?
Won't be save-game compatible afaik.

Code:
-- PtP
UPDATE SmallAwards SET Influence = '30' WHERE Type = 'MINOR_CIV_QUEST_PLEDGE_TO_PROTECT';
UPDATE SmallAwards SET CapitalGPPoints = '75' WHERE Type = 'MINOR_CIV_QUEST_PLEDGE_TO_PROTECT';
UPDATE SmallAwards SET RandomMod = '10' WHERE Type = 'MINOR_CIV_QUEST_PLEDGE_TO_PROTECT';
Look for this in QuestChanges.sql and replace that '75' to a '25'.

version 8.6.2
Okay... Not sure if this is a bug or just a one off weird thing...

A city of mine got a conscripted unit once it hit pop 10 with the one Authority policy. Alright, that is wonderful. EXCEPT the city is land locked and it was given a Trireme which was put in a one tile lake next to one of my other cities.

Oh, and in case you were wondering (after seeing the pic), I had been trying to "city sprawl" to get enough religion followers in order to build the building for reformation. Thankfully, I got an engineer before St Basil's and held on to it and used it for that.

FYI - If anyone knows of a good free image hosting site that is capable of having its images displayed in forums while allowing me to delete images should I choose, please let me know. Thank you.

Oh boy, that's quite an unfortunate unit to get.. I had a similar instance some time ago, but I don't remember if it was in vanilla or not.

For image uploading I've always used imgur but tinypic works too

Now you can't be attacked by the lake XD

I actually recal a game from a very long time ago where such conscription saved me. It was when Dromons had 2 range and i got a Dromon right when my city was under siege

I really like how the changes feel in this version. One thing that I'll point out though, when it comes to certain pantheons/beliefs there are still some that are underwhelming and I'll probably never pick, regardless of synergy under certain starts or situations. Some pantheons/beliefs are flat out better than others, but I guess if playing on higher difficulties you'd just be thankful for anything after the AI scoops everything up.

I took Zealotry for the first time, and I'm disappointed. It'll cost me nearly 600 faith for a standard foot soldier (tercio) in Renaissance... All my current accumulated faith, almost 2000, for 3 basic units? I imagine it only gets more expensive as the game goes along. Why would I ever choose this again, even as a warmonger, when there's more benefits from almost all other options? Are those sparse units going to turn the tide for me significantly over the course of a game, meanwhile your faith/religion is completely castrated? I think the costs need to be cheaper in order to really make me desire this as a warmonger.

Another example is Mastery. If it's still there, why would anyone not choose this 100% of the time, regardless of civ or play style? Or who the hell would choose churches or cathedrals over mandirs? There are a few more examples, but I'll leave it at that because it's not a big deal really, plus the fact is that there are options to choose from that will get the job done at the end of the day. I won a CV as Arabia (tradition, 44pop Mecca) last night where I took God of the Sun with flood plains start, even though I really wanted to just take Goddess of Beauty for the wonder spam.

Lastly to note, a couple mods I've used before with no problems are now not working with the last and current beta.
  1. Barbarians Unlimited Exp
  2. Global - Capture Great People
  3. Global - Capture Settlers

I really like zealotry as warmonger. It's usually a unit every 3 or 4 turn, plus I can accumulate it to faith buy planes immediately after discovering Flight.

Obviously you should only take zealotry if you play civs with high faith generation like Byzantium or Spain. If zealotry would get buffed these civs would be too strong.

Actually i haven't played Mastery for a year at least. It is by far not that strong as you think.
Or who the hell would choose churches or cathedrals over mandirs?
I'm not sure about Churces, haven't tested them since they were changed, but Cathedral over Mandir is an okay choice sometimes. Cathedral is a more earlygame building, maybe it is slightly weaker than Mandir overall, but it is definitely not bad

Agreed. The +1 culture and production beliefs per 2 followers are very strong. Mastery gives a good range of yields, but those can really drive in some strong focuses.

You have a point. Warmongering Spain can already be a monster as is. I'll give it a chance, but still looks underwhelming in my game using Assyria. AI beat me to Hero Worship as well, so no Assyrian synergy for me, only tears...

Not really. I got it as France and Prussia as well (Japan too, but it has additional faith). I haven't had any problem with happiness so what Enchancer Belief would be better for a warmonger? Zealotry also increase strategic resources count, which is important to me for cruisers and planes.
