Standard Immortal Communitas_79 as America. Lost (CV) on Turn 375.
So early game it was all about Spain. Spain was a power respected and feared by the Mayans, Russia, and myself. As such, we created a united front against them with DPs for a large part of the game. Spain attacked frequently, and I made little gains here and there, but mainly it was just endless killing of Spain's inexhaustible army. As my range musketmen turned into g guns, I finally had the forces to really push on Spain, and started taking key cities, eventually taking his capital.
However, meanwhile Egypt RAGED ahead of the game, and was like 11 techs and 5 policies ahead of me. He was already influential with every civ, and it was quite clear that without immediate and non-stop military aggression, teh game was lost. And so i began the bloody business.
Backed by Industry and Autocracy I sent wave after wave of troops against the shores of Egypt. For a time, it was looking really good. I saved Bratslavia and pushed him back on that front, and got my forces to night surround elephantine. But Egypt did the AI thing and poofed up another couple of armies. That was manageable, but he also got a couple of bombers installed...and while I was waiting for AA guns to come across he did a lot of damage to some key troops. I started losing momentum and was pushed back to the sea....and Brastslavia fell.
I kept up the pressure but ultimately I wasn't pressuring enough, and Egypt took the CV. Honestly considering his tech lead I don't know what took him so long, I guess he really did focus on military over the wonder for a while...because he had it in the bag if he had just focused his capital on it. CV to Egypt, I lose
My notes:
- This game proved to me that the current spy numbers are not sufficient to allow real science comebacks. I turned off tech trades this game to see what could be done with just raw comeback mechanics. I had EVERYTHING you could ask for in an underdog, I had all of my TRs to Russia all game (20 SPT a pop or more), that were not once pillaged. I had World Science Initiative and Scholars in Residence. And I had all of my spies focusing on science steals on Egypt. And yet by the end I was 3 techs behind China, and 8 behind Egypt. I just didn't have the juice.
- The AI seems weirdly focused on paratroopers at times, sometimes that's like the bulk of there army. Paratroopers are useful units...but they don't have any offense, and army of them is just a nuisance but its not really going to hurt your units.
- Another game where I was weirdly unhappy for most of the game, buildings and even a few public works just didn't do the job.
