@Recursive Quick update: Rome still got completely demolished by my Zulu Archer rush, but he definitely fought back much harder. I had to bring backup Archers for healing and had to use actual melee units to protect them instead of just waiting two tiles away with my Pathfinder. Being Zulu, three of my Archers got Logistics partway through; I think his Spearmen would have stopped me otherwise. Seems to be doing much better overall

Credit for tactical AI improvements should go to ilteroi, but this certainly sounds better. :)

When you simplified much of the code in GetBestApproachTowardsMajorCiv some months back, you changed the "no target? Abort!" code from -10x WAR/HOSTILE bias to simply setting it to 0, that's when it became impactful, but the function itself was bugged since it returned a cached attack target (not sure when that occurred, probably a long time ago).

The bug became evident when I swapped the order of various functions around, so the zero-out ones occurred last, but it's been affecting the AI for months...so, hoping to see significantly more aggression in the future :D

Also, gotta give credit to @ilteroi for actually debugging it.

I don’t recall setting it to zero. May have been a manual merge from something else. I tend to avoid zeroes in the Diplo AI as it can create issues like that. In any case solid work finding the bug.

@ilteroi Nicely done with the tactical AI; Rome fought a valiant fight against my weenie Archer rush. He was ultimately no match, but I feel like I outplayed him rather than bullied him with tactics the AI wasn't capable of engaging with.

I mean the mere fact that I'm feeling the heat on MARATHON lets you know how good the AI has gotten haha

Ooh lord I haven't played Standard in months. I'd probably get my butt whooped.

What difficulty level are you playing on?

Turn 202 update on my Japan game: Had a 3rd war with Montezuma that I started because he settled too aggressively, I became friends with Napoleon, and Attila backstabbed me. Montezuma hates my guts (for good reason), but just when I thought he was about to attack me again, he and Napoleon both declare on Attila (who I'm still at war with). Scores are pretty even, I'm the lowest one but I'm not far from researching Steel (Japan's power spike tech). No cities have been conquered yet (except me burning a freshly founded Aztec city), but now Attila has 1, maybe 2 cities, that might be at risk of being taken by Napoleon. My wonders (Petra and Great Wall) got sniped by someone on another continent. I have a feeling if they're more peaceful over there, they'll be miles ahead of us warmongers.

AIs don't like backstabbers, for good reason. :)

I think the challenge and unpredictability are in a sweet spot, at least in your game.

Yeah, they're a bit more aggressive about declaring.

I'm playing the pre-hotfix version and I've been counter-spying in Washington and New York the entire game. I haven't killed a single spy despite being stolen from several times.

Is this a bug or am I getting really unlucky?

Hello everyone. I am playing this version and I must tell you that you are doing a great job in this mod.
By the way, I take the opportunity to ask you:
# 1 In which file can I reduce the amount of science awarded by a great scientist during the game? given that when using them to discover technoilogies they usually give me the equivalent of 2 approximate technologies which is a great advantage for me.
# 2 Is it possible to solve the problem that occurs when a technology exceeds the cost of 211,000 by turning it into a negative number? In that case it takes only 1 turn to discover this technology.
I don't want to have to go down 5% for each new city or marathon multiplier (UPDATE GameSpeeds SET ResearchPercent = 300 WHERE Type = 'GAMESPEED_MARATHON';).

Yeah, they're a bit more aggressive about declaring.

Any feedback? :P

I'd comment, but I don't know the difficulty level or who declared on who, etc.

Emperor, communitu map, 16 civs, huge, land-heavy.

All of those were declared on me. If I were going by this, I'd say its probably too much; however, I started this game off by being extremely aggressive myself, taking an early capital and a couple other cities besides. So everyone was pretty angry at me regardless.

That being said, my entire continent is embroiled in wars right now. I think this is overall a good thing for the early eras; if everyone is still this violent by the late game, I'd say that might be a problem.

Good to know...may need some tuning. Will adjust once I hear more from the community. :)

I'm a fan of early war so I'm a fan of the AI changes. Only problem was that my neighbor was the Huns with horse archers...
The only appropriate response to that is GIT GUD.

(Epic, Immortal) Turn 249 update: Napoleon is useless, even in his war with Attila he didn't even move his army, and just peaced out doing nothing, and now he's too much of a pussy to do declare any wars. He had a ton of space and went 10 city wide from the start, now he's fallen behind me and Attila in score, and I can't even use him to make up for my gold deficit because he doesn't have any money either. For the past 30 turns or so, I've been pinned in a 2-front war against both Montezuma and Attila, but I'm used to that (German irl). As expected, my power spiked as soon as I got Dojos in all cities and started pumping out Samurai. I even got the Zealotry enhancer belief (and learned that units bought with faith get full xp!). On the northern front, my Samurai are cutting through Montezuma's classical army like a hot knife through butter. If I'm fast enough, I might even be able to vassalise him. The western front might become a problem though. Luckily I have 2 allied CS, one on either flank of Attila, dividing his attention and troops, but his horse archers are starting to break into my territory and I had to accept some tiles being pillaged. I have almost nothing to do defend there except city walls and spearmen I can't upgrade (-30 gpt ftw). Now he's even sending knights. My focus right now is certainly to finish Montezuma in one swift move, then I can finally focus on the bigger threat. Weirdly enough, Montezuma's units get an anti-warmonger bonus despite all my wars being defensive and me not having taken any cities yet. I wonder how that works. I also wonder why Attila hates me so much, the only thing I ever did to him was buy a tile at his borders, a hundred turns ago. He even has my religion. Still backstabbed me, denounced me and then declared war again. I could understand if he just wants to conquer me, nothing personal, but he legitimitely hates me. He's not even friends with Montezuma.

Spoiler :
The turn before this, Montezuma had a lot more units. My Samurai take very little damage and heal +25 on every kill. I only crossed into his territory 2 turns ago, after holding the line to get some more promotions and bombard his city.
