New CivIV Screenshot from E3

i don't think they're multi-units, when i first saw these (and the old screenshots) i thought the 4 units meant the unit had 4 health, a veteran. it's reinforce the idea that they represent multiple soldiers, plus, all of the 'multi-units' we've seen have bee homogenous, no reason to believe they were ever seperate

That's exactly what I thought it would be. Personally, I think it would be much more entertaining to see units die in succession rather than see health points disappearing from a unit.

It would be interresting, but why will new men appear from no where when you have Battlefield Medecine? It is strange.

Yep, I reckon instead of a health bar, we will see the amount of men in a unit determine the regiment's health.

Prepare for cluttered battlefields!

:D

I think the multi units will just crowd it up and what do they meen by faster gameplay? Because I like the slow pace of the ancient age before you get tanks and stuff.

the gameplay is slow, but the game as a whole moves so fast in my opinion. I like playing a long game in the ancient age, taking a while to research. If you make a mistake it doesn't matter too much, but it does matter.

I'm talking about the modern age in the beginning

there was another pic SNOOPY, do you want me to scan it as well?

Just putting my 2cents in here.
Despite the grainyness i think the upcoming civ4 should be promising. Lets all hope it delivers what we've been waiting for each and every civilization release.
But chances are it probably won't and will fall short in areas like civ and civ2 and 3 did. Well 2 and 3 moreso than 1 simply because 1 had no comparison.

Anyways am I the only person that feels that updating the graphics all massive 3D like and trying to make what is at its heart a strategy game into both a combination of strategy game and high-graphic intensity gameplay ala homeworld for example?

Its just always been my opinion that good graphics in a strategy game is great but there comes a point where if you start to go beyond it the game feels less of a strategy and becomes weird.
Like for example I kid you not I played civ2 for ages with civ3 sitting on the shelf becomes the totally new graphic look just weirded me out and everything else was slower.
Admittadly now i enjoy civ3 but the comfort factor wasn't there and I just worry with civ4 that maybe they'll overkill the graphics like how I felt on homeworld. I dumped homeworld ASAP simply because it felt like a shoot-em-up with tid bits of strategy leaked in.

Keep an eye on e3, as there is bound to be a lot more info on CivIV coming in soon.
Definitely. May is going to be a big month for Civ4. Besides PC Gamer, PC Zone also has a big preview of Civ4 in the June issue.

and we have E3, a publicity event Civ4 just can not afford to miss. It's going to be a fun month (and a busy month for CFC)! :)

The close exanimation of the picture (Well, someone was going to do it sooner or later ;) )

The units on the left look like African swordsmen... does this mean that each "culture group" has its' own unit graphics? Or is it a UU of some kind?

One the banners, the left unit has a shield and spear arrangement (like on the Kenyan or whatever flags - it looks like the Zulus are in), and the right unit has a horse head.

That's you're choice really. I could never bring myself back to Civ2 again after Civ3.

Despite incessant ramblings from die hards about features not in Civ3, which really were mostly exploits anyways (nerfed ICS, no spies, unit gifting) Civ3 was a superior product in all respect. It wasn't as 'perfect' as many hoped given its buggy initial build and PTW didn't help the matter.

As for the new graphic look, it took getting used to. It certainly looks nicer than Civ2, but kept the same isometric perspective.

I suppose they can't please everyone with each new version of Civ, but Civ2 is really a game that is well past its time. Good for nostalgia only.

Cool... more shots is always good.

What makes you think it's African?

The flag on the right clearly looks like a horse, and the left flag looks somewhat like a bull. Perhaps each civ has its own associated animal image? That sounds silly though... maybe it's a scenario or something.

To be honest I find this screenshot really dissapointing.
It doesn't look very different at all from the Civ3 I'm playing at the moment.

When I read about the 3D engine and ability to witness live battles, group different units together, etc, I was expecting a realistic ratio;ie - you could zoom riiiiiggght in from the globe and witness your armies marching through the hills, watch your horse contingents galloping through fields, etc. I didn't think it would just be the same 'grouped unit' animation that this Civ community developed years ago.

I was hoping they'd move away from the 'chess board' interface and more into an aesthetic, global, and realistic world you could partake in- or at least combine the two.

So, you think you can speak for me and all the other CI2 mod-makers?

I think you are writing off a game that still is an all time classic. And always will be.

Indeed, it is an oldie, but there is still an active community making great graphics and scenarios for it.

The dark skin mainly. Hard to tell from the picture quality though. Could be Chinese, SE Asian or Indian.

Now I've looked at it closely... it doesn't look like anything... could be an owl. Or an angel. Or a trophy. Or a set of scales. Or a dress-wearing headless fat guy with four arms. Or a fist emerging from the earth clutching straws. It's like one of those ink-blot psychological tests.

If you want. Its a small pic tho, (but an interesting one). I will do it tonight if you haven't already.

But right now the UK have access to a 4 page preview with 10 great screens of CivIV, I will be seeing them on the weekend.
