pre-release info New First Look: Machiavelli

pre-release info
Will you look at the detail of the cloth on his tunic: beautiful!

And when they mentioned his "stabbing someone in the back" I got instant Flashbacks to the old Diplomacy board game which was usually won by someone with a perfectly timed stab-in-the-back of his ally. "SitB" was a favorite acronym for the tactic in the old Diplomacy fanzines.

Now I wonder how many of us will be too embarrassed to admit that we really want to play this guy?

Wow! Very interesting and unexpected.
I think it would be great if he got something related to espionage.

Don't forget what day it is today. (by the time i'm posting).

And what is an alternate term for The Devil?
And Why?

He's going to be fun in multiplayer, do you accept the offer, or you do reject it and give him money instead?

Great choice, excellent appearance. But I'm not really sure what to do with him without knowing the diplomacy options.

Machiavelli carries on the legacy of duplicitous Italian Civ leaders! Succeeding the backstabbing Enrico Dandolo of Venice in Civ5.

What does The Spider mean
Puppeteerings. and 'strings of deciets'. Spider can strafe, as well as going straight.
And Spider casts a web. which is a home, and a trap to catch any luckless lifeform small enough to get caught. and a spider can eat.

And Spider is known of a strong (and lethal to man) poison. Something shared by its longtail kin 'Scorpion' which having much weaker poison that just enough to kill insects but not a man.

Levying troops from your vassals is not the same as hiring mercenaries... even if you have to pay them.
Part of his unique ability is levying units from city-states that he isn't suzerain of. So, real mercenaries

He could be a stray leader with no signifcant civ to lead.
He's well suited for that, since "a Machiavel" has become a name for a type of leader--derived of course from Machiavelli, but applicable across cultures.

What does The Spider mean
If you have watched Game of Thrones you would know. :mischief:
Though he gives off more Littlefinger vibes.

I'm unaware that he was specifically called that, but I wonder if it's a coincidence and just a generic term for him being involved in deceit and a spymaster?

Every time I see an agenda my heart breaks one tiny bit
At least this one seems more unique. Will love you if you attack others, but not him.

Actually, this is finally something that caught my eye:

The Spider: If not at war with Machiavelli, increase Relationship by Medium Amount for each other war.

Could it be they finally listened to my feedback? And that it now scales, instead of just being a boring toggle?
