New Name for COTM

I agree with AlanH.
His names for game class (level) represent exactly what they must:
Adventurer - this game play usually novices. Those, who want to try something new, also they are training their skills for future famous battles.
Challenger - people, who play this games, feel that they are enough trained and they are real ready to compete with each other.
Predator - you must be a real predator to play successfully on this level. :)
I vote for these names with my both hands!

as someone who has first become interested in the GOTM series i understand Predator as being the most difficult, and i like Open because it is a neutral term and seems to be the most common submission, (open to everyone). Conquests confused me though. it doesn't sound like it is for a beginner; implying something contrary actually. "Adventurer" seems to have the right flavor without being condescending. a person at this level has enough confidence to adventure into the GOTM games, but still not quite ready to compete on an even level. (or for me a game above emperor).
as for the game in general, every game is a GOTM, so using one of the additions such as a letter before or after would be easily understood. "classic" for PTW-CivIII, GOTMC, GOTMConquests, GOTMC3C, or under the GOTM heading simply Conquest Game, etc.
i enjoyed my first game this month and regardless of the title i'd like to thank the staff for their efforts. playing this way requires more focus, (no restart, or reload) and i welcome the continued challenge.

I'm just back from a spell away from a computer, so I am late to this debate - and predictably have a POV :)

As has been said already, GOTM is a trademark associated with a particular game format. I believe (as others have said) that it should be used as a generic term for "stuff" pertaining to the forum in general. I think that since conquests and "legacy" Civ games are being offered then the two versions need their own acronyms, and the differentiating letter should prefix GOTM. This is because we already have SGOTM - Succession game of the month - which I think sounds right, as would Conquests Game of the month IMVHO. The original GOTM is a little harder, but as long as it has a letter it matters not to me. Personally I like Legacy GOTM.

As for difficulty class names... I never liked the ones we had, and would change them all.
Apprentice - Journeyman - Master is a little trite and obvious but the little sideswipe at the D&G population amuses me, but that's just me.

Finally, I think that the conquests games, Legacy games and Succession games should all have their own sub-forums otherwise we are going to have 3 or 4 pages of stickies in the main forum.

Alan And I have discussed sticky-reductions. Alan's come up with a good suggestion, and we'll sort that out starting with COTM 02. :)

VGOTM - Vanilla GOTM.
CGOTM - Conquest GOTM.
SGOTM - Succession GOTM.

Keep it painfully simple. As for the classes, make it something like Easy, Standard, Hard or something that basic. The Conquest/Open/Predator meant too many things to remember (Which one was which - I had to give up one of my games because it was Conquest instead of Open)

... and when we have different Succession games for PtW/1.29 and for C3C?

The class name problem arose because the word 'Conquest' has three different meanings in this one context - a class, a victory condition and a new software version. You are suggesting doing the same thing with Vanilla, which specifically *doesn't* mean PtW anywhere else.

Succession games (i should look into them) should perhaps not use the G and just be SOTM then a 5 letter acronym could be used insted of becoming the odd 6 letter acronym.

OSOTM = Original
CSOTM = C3C version

Edit: better yet, why not do away with the civ3/ptw stuff and make ppl buy C3C and/or a pc? :mischief:

Then VGOTM would be OGOTM (Original GOTM).

As for Succession games... Well, maybe we shouldn't have *OTM in them at all - come up with something different, like Monthly Team Game (MTG).
