COTM really is a terrible acronym. If someone can think of a better term for C3C gotms, then please suggest it here!

Since that thread seemed to get bogged down on other issues I thought I would start this one soley for new name suggestions. I have listed the few suggestions that were made in the original thread.

Please add more suggestions here.

Maybe we should just keep the regular GOTM acronym as GOTM then so as not to confuse, everyone will know it means vanilla and PTW. But we could use CGOTM, and SGOTM for the Conquests and Succession.

Regarding the name (COTM), how about:
GOTM - means anything to do with all GOTMs, e.g. the forum
GOTMO - the Original (or Old ) game, run on the mid-month cycle, GOTMO32 this month
GOTMC - the Conquests games, GOTMC01 this month
GOTMS - the Succession games

As for a new name how about "Conquest Challenge" or "Conquest Monthly Challenge".

Thinking about a name, how about MCCC, or better yet, MC3 for Monthly Civilization Conquests Competition.

How about:
CAMS (Conquests Alternate Monthy Series). C and G are so close that it is hard to easily tell GOTM from COTM.

I'll throw out C3CGOTM

Well, I proposed TNAMGOTMPOC (The New And Marvellous GOTM Played On Conquests) but none of the Staff seemed to like it...

If I missed anyone's suggestion it was not intentional please post it here.

To Ainwood and the GOTM staff please feel free to commandeer this thread. I assume you may want to do some kind of poll later after we receive some more suggestions.

I think this would work.
How about a poll?

What about GOTMM for the [civ3]/[ptw] contest
Game of the Mid Month ;)
Should help me remember which one I'm playing!

I like this as well, with one exception. The "O" looks too much like a zero. How about GOTMP - "P" for previous versions.

Or maybe GOTMV for Vanilla. To include PTW.

Good idea to split this into a thread of its own! :goodjob:

We (the staff) have also had some discussions about whether to rename the 'conquest' class or not, and if so, what to rename it to. Anyone want to make comments on that?

When we get a few more suggestions, I'll add a poll. :)

The conquest class could be renamed Conqueror, in the same spirit as Predator.

Hmm, then we probably need another name for Open as well :)

i think the classes could adopt the same enumeration that the game has to specify skill. "emperor" sounds a lot sexier than "predator" in my opinion. (one reason)

i'm new here so it wasn't until i'd pretty much started playing that i realized "open" meant "monarch"(two reasons). i'm sure there are reasons for having another metric tht i haven't understood yet so this point does probably not count.

i'd imagine it is the most portable scale for people jumping around at several game sites like this one. think the developers have kept it (& extended) from the first realease to from way back in the nineties so it seems likely it will be in any new editions.(three reasons)

two cents worth of thought and a dollar of typing.

cheers,
john

Hi jazz man :wavey: Welcome to GOTM. The classes do not correlate with the difficulty levels. A game may be set at any difficulty level for the "Open" class, and then the "Conquest" class and the "Predator" classes have various bonuses and handicaps respectively to make it easier or harder. Last month's game was set at Monarch, but previous games have used Emperor or Deity settings for the Open class.

So using "Emperor" as a player class name would be even more confusing than "Conquest"

Too many games, names, and acronyms will be inherently confusing if they don't explain themselves and are all mixed together in the same forum.

Easy/Normal/Hard are straight forward, simple, not 'cute', and shouldn't even exist.

Sir Plebs' acronym suggestions are excellent except another variation of the succession games will be required when the overly energetic GOTM staff decides to run a normal & C3C version concurently.

There should be a subforum for each major type of game to organize the forums. Maybe i'm just getting old, but this place is confusing.

For monthly Civ 3 Conquest games, I suggest using C3C in the names because it's an abbreviation that is very widely used already--either C3Cx--Civ name, where x is the month number (for example , C3C1--Hittites for this month's game)

or

C3C-GOTM x--Civ name, where x is the month name (for example , C3C-GOTM1--Hittites for this month's game).

The second is a bit longer, but it is clearer.

To be simple and opposite of Predator, why not rename the Conquest class Prey (or even Pray :mischief: )? The one thing bad about it in my opinion is it's only one syllable.

As for the monthly games, I like the idea of keeping the old GOTM as is, and using a mix of King of America's ideas and calling the new one C3COTM, as in Civ 3 Conquest of the Month.

Monthly conquest game: MCG, or some varient of this.

Of course the very successful (??) coca-cola idea could be tried: GOTM for the conquests game, and classic GOTM for PTW/Civ3.

I think something that sounds different would be good as otherwise this may become confusing.

Okay, somebody has got to say it.

What is wrong with...COTM?

It fits the theme and is easily recognizable. If the probelem is w/ the conquest level of the GOTM, then change it to conqueror as suggested above.

What about renaming the conquest class to "Novice" or something along those lines and predator could be "expert"
I have played both conquest and open class games and don't feel that the "novice" label is in any way derogatory, although some people may think otherwise.

We could even use "trainee" and "Master"?
