New SG - Monarch, Standard Settings, Continents, Large Map

Theme for this turn - In the immortal words of the Bard:
Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war!!!!

So after much delay due to debate in the Senate, Kai finally assumes the throne last in the night.

Of course before he is even comfortable sitting down a messenger comes in from the far north. It appears some barbarian galleys have teamed up to destroy our Caravel north of Periclese's land.
Civ4ScreenShot0021.jpg

So Kai is forced to take some time from war prep to craft a appropriate note to the families of the brave Roman explorers who were lost.

That accomplished, He signs orders for a few more Trebuchet only to be interrupted again by the ambassador for Will the Orange.
Civ4ScreenShot0022.jpg

While trying very hard to restrain himself from making snide comments (Who really wants to be Orange anyway?) he sent the ambassador packing with vague promises of talking someday down the line.

Next in line was the the commander of the armies of the north... Together he and Kai were just about to pull out the map of Pericles's land when in walks said victim (I mean ruler's) lackey. He was offering a trade.

Civ4ScreenShot0023.jpg

Seeing the flexibility this tech gave us in his coming campaign, Kai accepted the deal, and immediately called forth the ambassador to Hammy. To prevent Pericles from making the trade, the same tech was offered and another 60 gold plus his world map was received in return.

Trades completed, another messenger appeared at the gate. It seems some barbarians had come to call in the south.
Civ4ScreenShot0025.jpg

Axemen from Rome were quickly summoned and effectively dispatched the threat.

War planning was just resuming again when Yet another ambassador interrupted. (Kai thought it was beginning to feel like he was standing in the public baths not trying to have a secret war counsel but he heard yet another interruption)
Civ4ScreenShot0026.jpg

Again the ambassador was sent on his way with only vague promises of talking later.

When Kai returned to his war counsel he found a note waiting for him. The wise men had figured out how to train the populace.
Civ4ScreenShot0027.jpg

It was with joy that Kai directed his sages to create a proposal on how to liberate his fellow citizens thinking (Liberalism)

Some time later, Kai was informed that a great Merchant had arrived in the empire.
Civ4ScreenShot0028.jpg

After getting over his initial shock at not getting another great scientist, Kai directed the merchant to go to Hadrametum as he would compliment existing forum and cottages there.

Kai also received bad news from a very wet and exhausted messenger. Our explorer had hit an ice block north of Will the Orange's land.
Civ4ScreenShot0029.jpg

Luckily He had foreseen this possibility and a new Caravel (to replace the one lost to barbarians) had already set out to circle the world in the other direction. However this gave our Caravel on the other side of the world no choice but to begin the long trip back south so see if there is a southern passage around Gandhi's land.

That done Kai reviewed his notes and saw that the merchant and last of the the legions had all arrived in Hadrametum. He ordered the merchant to settle and the legions to march. It was time for war.

Summoning the worthless excuse of humanity that serves as Pericles's ambassador, Kai informed him of our intention and proceeded to launch the attack, netting a new worker in the process. Pericles responded by sending spies to destroy some stone and granary(I think???) in Carthage.

The next morning reports came in from the front: Eretia had been taken and razed without losing a single legion.
Hammy hearing of our great success came looking to bask in our glory.
Civ4ScreenShot0030.jpg

Kai kindly told him to return to his capital as I was too busy to assemble the documents at this time. (Plus the fool did not realize Kai had just gotten his maps a few turns earlier. ;) )

As our legions pressed on north into the poor fools territory, our Ally Gandhi sent his ambassador over for a chat. The two visited a great food vendor on the forum and Kai listened to his pitch.
Civ4ScreenShot0031.jpg

In the interest of improving relations, Kai sent him back to his master with the knowledge he requested.

Returning to the palace Kai received another message from the front. The battle for Epherus had started.
Civ4ScreenShot0033.jpg

As he waited for the results of the battle, he perused the daily intelligence reports. Two items were of note:
Civ4ScreenShot0032.jpg

Kai also noted that Pericles is very close to getting Guilds. So he called his commanders to review the military plan.

The commanders arrived with great news:
Civ4ScreenShot0034.jpg

The battle had only cost one Trebuchet. Kai chose to keep the city seeing that it is well placed for future moneymaking.

As the army consolidated it's hold on Epherus, Kai reviewed the state of the campaign.

The units in the field look like this:
Civ4ScreenShot0035.jpg

Also Pericles's resources look like this:
Civ4ScreenShot0036.jpg

Kai noted the only Iron and Bronze for the empire is almost within striking distance of his army. Taking or Razing those two cities would prevent Periclese from producing most of his strongest units and make the possible appearance of knights a non issue.

Anyway that is the turn. I went a couple turns over but got us to 1 turn away from Liberalism. A few more thoughts...

1) Free tech from Liberalism should probably be Astronomy.
2) Antium really needs a Forum for the GP bonus.
3) I realized as I was typing this up that I never reset the artist from the Stone, Horse, Deer city to something else. That should probably be done soon.
4) Horses will be connected soon. So we could go for guilds as our next tech if we wanted knights, that would also get us markets. Of course Gunpowder is also good too....

Anyway here's the save let me know if anyone sees something I missed...

Let's take away those metals if we can. Let's also remember to help Hadrumentum out with some culture to fight Hammy off there.

FYI, if you guys happen to go thru the next turn sets really quickly, I will be out of town from tomorrow until the 11th. I will still have internet access, but no CIV.

Great set, Kai! (what software do you use to get all the great notes you were reading? :) )

I got home near midnight last night and don't have the save yet. Without seeing the situation, I tend to agree should take Astronomy. Galleons will help us protect our fishing nets outside of Rome and Antium.

Can we make a list of which cities we want to keep and which we want raze? I'm not clear on how well our economy is doing to absorb more maintenance at this point. I might want to raze the port city sitting on Iron and build a Roman city one tile south of the Iron deposit. Other than that, the rest look like great sites -- I want them all!

I agree we should take Pericles' Copper and Iron away from him pronto. His Horses will be still pose us a problem. If he has Knights, we have no real counter to them until we can train our own Knights. And he'll be certain to send Knights to pillage our northern cities. So I concur Guilds might be a wise choice for researching next.

Meanwhile, I might try to train some spies to take out his horse pastures. He'll rebuild them but maybe we can slow and interrupt his Knight production, causing him to waste hammers.

At what point do we want to sue for peace? After we take Knossos, Mycenae, Rhodes and that city hiding behind the spices to the west, we'll have a chance of holding off his culture until the next phase of our war against him. Do we have enough gas left to take 4 more cities?

I'm actually not all that worried about the horses.
Without iron, the best he will have is horse archers.

What I'm actually more worried about us taking his iron away and then him getting some back via a trade with Hammy.

As for spies, there are actually a couple of them in production. I was going to use them for defense of our critical cities/infrastructure, but they could be used for an assault on him.:D

OK Good warring and good progress... I am out of the loop for the weekend so with Liq in charge prepare for some "cough syrup fuelled antics".

Overall things are looking good.

1. War front. Just keep pumping troops (although elephants are quite cool versus Knights I would concentrate on trebs Macemen and the odd defensive Pike). Lets clobber Pericles hard because after a phony truce we want to go all the way to capturing the Great Lighthouse. No vassalisation for him.. we can save that for Hammurabi)

2. Liberalism race. I think we should avoid Guilds as Willem has it and it will be extortable from Pericles for a 10 turn peace treaty soon (he is 1 turn from completion). We have such a lock on Liberalism (nobody has paper yet and most lack philosophy) we can aim for somehting chunkier than Astronomy leeping that in or back pocket if Liberalism comes under threat)

3. Research I would go Nationalism for future drafting and the Taj (Cumae to avoid GA polution? or risk it in the capital??) particularly as by the time its researched we will have Marble from capturing Rhodes :deal:

4. After Nationalism we should be close to wanting a break in the war so take guilds for Peace and consider:
i) Economics race for a free GM (who will cash bomb to upgrade Maces to Rifles for a future war  ) (Although Willem maybe pursuing this path, certain if he has banking when we extort Guilds)
ii) Starting the Rifling Beeline, who knows maybe we can get Rifling from Liberalism (unlikely but who knows..)

Enjoy applying the hammer to Pericles and carrying on Scrubkai's good work

Ralph

p.s Scrubkai. In the short term the Merchant would have been better settled in the capital due to 50% Bureacracy bonus and 100% bonus on his 3 :science: from the Academy. Of course in the long term with Wall street, for example, in Hadru it was for from bad choice...

If he has Knights, we have no real counter to them until we can train our own Knights.

Pikes can stand up well to Knights Frankcor so I am not that worried about him having them.

I was thinking that long term we would be putting Wall street in Hadru, so thats why I went that route.

That looks to be our best long term financial center. You can basicly put a cottage on every square there.

Bureacracy only applies to raw commerce, last time I checked. So the gold and the beakers generated by specs wouldn't benefit at all from being in the capital.

Okay, I'm thoroughly confused. We're 1 turn away from Liberalism. Are you suggesting we switch to Nationalism right now and wait until later to cash in the free tech? That's pretty gutsy but it sounds terrific to me.

I am concerned about extending the fight for too long at a time -- it's a common fault in my play. I would like to continue until we have secured an axis of cities consisting of, from east to west, Mycenae, Rhodes(will fall soon), Knossus, Ephesus(
check_14x16.gif
) and Hsung-Nu before seeking a trade. That may be over-aggressive but I'll keep a close watch on war-weariness. It seems to run heavier in BtS compared to Warlords.

Does anyone have strong feelings about which of those cities to raze or keep? I'm inclined to keep them all with the exception of Mycenae which will be pretty food-poor and unlikely to be able to pay it's own keep until we capture the grasslands north of it. We can always resettle it later if we want.

I'm going to hold off playing for another few hours to see if there's anyone still around to comment on these issues. The holiday weekend is upon us and I apologize for delaying so long already.

Feels right to me.

Ralph

Well we may get somehting better than Astronomy.
i) The opportunity cost of delaying is only a couple of better trade routes and maybe some resource trades from the other continent
ii) For the chance of maybe picking up something better.

We will probably end up taking Astronomy because somebody will start on Liberalism (we can use espionage to check) but there is little risk as long as we monitor the tech trade screens so is worth a shot.

Ralph

but there is little risk as long as we monitor the tech trade screens so is worth a shot.

I'll take that as a hint. ;) Thanks, Ralph. I'll play soon. Look for a report in the a.m.

It is with no small amount of trepidation that I sent the message to our researchers that they were to lay aside their study of Liberalism and seek to unravel the mysteries of Nationalism instead. For many years we had sought the secret to becoming Liberals and now, with the answer within reach, I had recieved instructions from Caesar himself to change course.

Nervously I had questioned him when I first heard those surprising words. "But excellency! Liberalism will bring us the knowledge to build large vessels and to navigate using the stars! Combined, we can use that knowledge to conquer the seas and spread our empire world wide!"

He had replied calmly, with no rebuke, "Forgetaboutit, frankcor. We need to have our sights on bigger things. We'll discover Liberalism when the time is right, and not a moment sooner. Just keep an eye on things, capische?"

"As you command, my capo," I said as I bowed, and turned to leave the palace.

"frankcor," I heard him say softly.

I stopped, turned again to face him.

"I want you to hurt Pericles bad. Make him an offer he can't refuse."

"Consider it done, Godfather."

And so began my second tour of duty in command of the empire's planning center. I ordering research on Liberalism halted and our scientists began to work on Nationalism, due in 13 turns. Being a nation would bring us the ability to draft more legions of foot-soldiers and our training barracks would bring great pride and happiness to our cities.

Next, I performed a brief review of city operations. At Rome I fired an Engineer who somehow had joined the staff there and hired an additional scientist instead. That move reduced the turns for Nationalism to 12.

That gain was lost when I removed a scientist in Antium to permit growth for 2 turns. The city had health capacity for one more population growth. I would restore the scientist when the city reached size 10 in two turns. (I don't know what I was thinking -- there was insufficient food to hire the scientist back when the city reached size 10).

It wasn't until I reached Arretium's review file did I find sufficient food capacity for hiring the one additional scientist needed to cut the research time back down to 12 turns. This is a very food-poor map.

Production of units proceeded nicely as the war effort continued. This announcement would prove to be significant for the siege of Knossos.
owner14.jpg

When the bombardment of Rhodes had been completed, three of our Trebuchets led the assault, each surviving their ordeals while lowering defenses within the city. The city fell with no losses!
owner15.jpg

After healing was completed, the stacks at Ephesus and Rhodes established strong (enough, I hoped) garrisons and turned toward their new respective targets. The stack at Ephesus moved east towards Knossos where they saw the first Greek Knights to arrive at the front.
owner16.jpg

By then, Ephesus had come out of revolt but the food situation was dire. It would shrink to size 5 before the starvation would end:
owner17.jpg

The stack at Rhodes sent a small expedition to the east toward the coastal city of Mycenae. Reports from the forward siege units I had dispatched reported a small garrison there although longbowmen on hills are never to be taken lightly.
owner18.jpg

The remaining force at Rhodes was sent to the west to join their comrades at Knossos.

The bombardment at Mycenae proved swift and as soon as sufficent force had arrived, the city was razed:
owner19.jpg

Our only loss there was a gallant Trebuchet.

And with that, the Greek's sole source of Iron had been disrupted and perhaps, no more Greek Knights would be arriving at the front. Our hopes that no other civilizations would trade Iron with him were high.

As you can see above, the fall of Mycenae made another Great General available to us. He was assigned to train more experienced troops in Rome.

Good news was to arrive from Knossos as well.
owner20.jpg

Our new spy had conducted his first espionage mission, successfully sabotaging the city walls. No one in the command center could understand how one man could be responsible for destroying what must have been millions of tons of masonary but the success was gleefully welcomed. The siege at Knossos was greatly shortened and our losses in taking the city were hopefully lessened. (Note: this is my first attempt at using espionage in a tactical role like this -- a new dimension to warfare has opened to me)

Some disturbing news also came from the front. Our units at the newly captured Rhodes stumbled upon a Babylonian Spy up to mischief there. Could our supposed friend Hammurabi being working in cohorts with Pericles to undo our gains at the front? Hmmm....
owner21.jpg

The destruction of the walls at Knossos had lowered their defensive culture to 49%. Our Trebuchets were able to eliminate all cultural defense quickly and the assault began.
owner22.jpg

As usual, Trebuchets led the way. That Guerrilla II Longbowman in his hilltop fortress killed four and wounded one of them all by himself. The sixth was able to wound him sufficiently that he would not play a significant role in the defense of the city any further. He died at the hands of one of our Praetorians as the last defender of Knossos.
owner23.jpg

Knossos fell at the cost of two seasoned Macemen, in addition to the 4 Trebuchets.

Knossos is now garrisoned with 2 Crossbowmen and a Medic Pikeman. Our forces outside the city are uncomfortably exposed so our losses may be higher if there are enemy units out of sight in the fog of war. A Pikeman from Rhodes snagged that worker in the forest just northeast of Knossos.

Pericles remains defiant -- his terms for peace are ridiculous considering his position -- perhaps the fall of Hung-Nu to the west will help him to see things clearer.
owner24.jpg

Our Caravels are making painfully slow progress. Our eastern one should be able to see polar ice very soon. The western one has passed the northern reaches of our continent and is finally sailing west. He is taking care to remain out of reach of the many barbarian galleys seen along the coast of what I suspect is a large island or sub-continent northwest of Greece. Perhaps we can turn our attention to settling it once we have rid our continent of the Greeks.

If the eastern galley finds no southern passage, would it make sense to trade maps with all five of the inhabitants of the other continent all in the same turn if none of them have circumnavigated by then?

ARRRGGGHHH! I had opened my autolog file in the turn before last to check how many turns I had played. I fogot to close it before playing my final (10th) turn and lost the autolog of the fall of Knossos. I reopened the save from the previous turn and replayed the last turn as faithfully as I could remember, chosing units to assault in the same order.

The save below is from my second attempt. If anyone objects, I can upload the original save instead.

Oh, one more confession: I was focusing some worker cycles on providing farms for Cumae so it can work more mines and forests. I used two workers to build a farm on a nice clear grasslands. Imagine my dismay when, upon completion, I opened the city to assign a citizen to work it and discovered that it was outside the fat cross. :( Maybe it won't be a complete waste if we build a city on those ruins someday and name it frankcor's Folly?
owner25.jpg

I do suggest we build a new city one tile south of the Iron that Mycenae once occupied soon. Pericles is sure to resettle on the Iron as soon as we call a peace treaty. It may not have been smart to raze it but not as stupid as founding on top of the iron, IMHO.

We have a scientist due in Rome in 2 turns. Well, the odds are 92%--somehow Rome got polluted by an engineer specialist for a while. Our economy is marginal -- pulling all those wounded units into Knossos to heal will cut some costs but city maintenance is starting to climb. We need more Courthouses.

Once healing is done, I think we already have enough Maces and Praetorians, many of them CR III, to take Hsung-Nu then get a 10-turn breather. I started U. of Sankore(14) in Rome but you can change that; no hammers have been committed yet.

I did as Godfather asked and kept an eye on AI research -- no one else has Education yet so we're still in good shape. Have fun!

A few thoughts/questions....

1) The great general. Why settle it in Rome rather then with our other great generals in our Cumae?
2) Mycena, we need to be on guard in the area until we get a city up and running here.
3) Looking at the dipolmacy screen, Periclese already has a trade with Hammy for iron. So we need to break that trade route. That looks like it can be done by taking Carib and Hsung. So we may want to expand our list of citys before we negotiate a treaty.
4) Trading Maps, at this point it doesn't look like anyone else has optics. So I think we can safely contiue to explore and see if maybe there is a single map we can buy that will let us circumvent the world. I would be AGAINST trading world maps at this point, as I see no reason to let any of the civs on the other side of the world know what's happening on our home contentent.
5) Why are we building barracks in our newly captured cities? Why not courthouses?
6) See Liquidated's comment.... That one blows my mind.

What am I missing about U. of Sankore being such a bad choice? It interested me in that it generates additional Great Scientist points.

I joined the General to Rome so we can produce naval units with experience points.

At Mycenae, I left that Elephant there just for the reason you suggest, scrubkai. We might want to augment him in case Pericles brings a larger force to resettle his Iron.

Barracks? I'll take the hit for that. I can't remember what I was thinking when I picked them over courthouses. :smoke:

I concur that we take Carib and Hsung before suing for peace as long as war weariness doesn't start eating our lunch. Carib is closer but Hsung is a better city (flood plains and hammers -- nice combination). Does it matter what order we take them? Probably not.

Even for GS points, it is inefficient, as a spec generates more points.
