Turkey’s ‘culture war’: Anger grows as string of events cancelled

As AK Party-run cities and districts cancel events, critics say the gov’t is waging a ‘culture war’ ahead of elections.

The first widely publicised cancellation occurred on May 9 when the governor of the Central Anatolian province of Eskisehir banned all outdoor events for 15 days on the grounds that “terrorist groups were preparing demonstrations”. Eskisehir is known as a lively college town with brimming nightlife and while the city municipality is run by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), the provincial governor, like all others in Turkey, was appointed by the president.
The ban effectively cancelled a large festival which was scheduled to take place in Eskisehir between May 12-15, featuring some of the country’s most popular singers.

Meanwhile, iconic Kurdish singer Aynur Dogan’s concert on May 20 in the province of Kocaeli was cancelled on the basis that the event was “not appropriate,” while folk musician Niyazi Koyuncu’s concert in the Istanbul district of Pendik scheduled for May 25 was banned on the grounds that Koyuncu – who is known for being opposed to the government – did not share the “value judgements and views” of the municipality.

Despite enjoying a surge in popularity, singer Melek Mosso’s June 3 concert at a festival in the western city of Isparta was axed by the municipality after two youth associations released a statement alleging that Mosso “encourages immorality,” urging that her show be shut down. Another Kurdish singer, Mem Ararat, had his concert in Bursa cancelled by the provincial governorate for reasons of “public safety”.

Meanwhile, spring festivals take place at numerous universities throughout the country but this year live music performances at the gatherings at Middle East Technical University in the capital of Ankara and Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul were cancelled, officially because three Turkish soldiers were killed in a recent military operation targeting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Both universities are led by rectors who have been appointed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“It’s hard to know the exact motivation behind [all] these cancellations, which is even more disturbing, but I think it’s related to the election climate we are about to enter,” said James Hakan Dedeoglu, a publisher of the independent music magazine Bant and long an active figure in the Istanbul music scene booking and promoting concerts.
“It seems to me it is a way for the forces in the government to show they can do whatever they want. Especially when it comes to answering the needs and requests of the conservative population. And they need to consolidate their voters, especially in this current disastrous economic downturn,” he told Al Jazeera.
Other analysts agree that the cancellations likely stem from a pre-election strategy on the part of President Erdogan, who has slipped in the polls due to Turkey’s ailing economy, with general and presidential elections set for June 2023.
“With the growth being down and inflation nearing triple digits – the highest since Erdogan came to power – and other economic indicators not looking very good, I think Erdogan is going to double down on the culture wars aspect of his brand,” Soner Cagaptay, Senior Fellow at the Washington Institute, told Al Jazeera.

Ironically, the concert bans and ensuing outrage have probably generated a bit of the Streisand effect, in which an attempt to suppress something only brings more attention to it. Melek Mosso continues to perform for large crowds across the country, while Aynur Dogan played on May 28 to a packed house at Istanbul’s pre-eminent outdoor venue, the Cemil Topuzlu Open Air Theatre, singing Kurdish songs to thousands of fans.

There are some serious numbers of research in this and while not many will say it so , the relation between the A-K-P and the numbers are known to be ... relevant . All those youth and whatever , especially when they are of the mindset to support morality , keep hearing about evil plots to spread atheism and they should not fall for the evils of the flesh ... Only to hear yet more scandals of male instructors raping some boys . And this always happens . Yet another state dormitory with excess numbers of suicides . Back to foreign powers and their evil plots . Which are real enough , as proven by their faciliation of New Turkey .

It does not appear that the US is even invited to the discussion. As feudal overlords their remaining military inside Syria are busy stealing wheat from syrian farmers.

HASAKAH, Syria, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The farmers in Syria's northeastern province of Al-Hasakah, considered a breadbasket of Syria, have been struggling to survive under the U.S. ban on wheat sales to the Syrian government-controlled parts of the province which is already hit by a severe drought.
Al-Hasakah contributed about 36 percent of wheat production in Syria, but the majority of the province was seized by Kurdish militias in 2015 except for some inner cities still under the Syrian government's control.
"Foreign intervention by the U.S. and its allies, and the drought have put the farmers in trouble, and they face obstacles to selling their products," Abdul-Hameed Karaku, the head of the farmers union in Al-Hasakah, told Xinhua.
"The difficulties and economic siege, as well as the embargo imposed by the U.S. forces, have broken the back of the farmers and added a big burden on them and their children," Karaku said.
The Syrian government has repeatedly slammed the U.S. forces, which have been operating in Syria since 2014 in the name of fighting terror groups, as a presence of occupation.
The U.S. troops, allied with the Kurdish militias, have also been accused of stealing Syrian oil, gas and wheat, and even setting massive fires to wheat and barley crops in the northeastern provinces.
The Syrian government has accused the U.S. forces of systematically and deliberately setting fires to the Syrian wheat fields in 2019 and 2020.

This of course are not news you will find in your western mainstream media. For them Syria does not exist any more. And never was a victim of a "special military operation". And there will indeed be plenty of material to make that claim. But the fault was not the ukranians' (soldiers, the government is very much at fault) as much as NATO. There is always contexts and I'm not the one who pretends that thins are simple. Or even equivalent between cases.

I almost alone here argued from the start for a course of action with a chance at keeping Ukraine in existence almost in one piece: negotiate a neutral, federated status. Force the Kiev regime to do it by making it clear it would have zero support otherwise. The US and the EU did the opposite, and most people here happily cheered on. The war would be an easy one, they claimed. Russia would crumble. And other delusions.

I have always been for avoiding war, to do so one needs to check the reality of the situations and proceed realistically.

The syrian regime is the most legitimate one of those available there. Certainly the most inclusive. The one force in Syria that historically didn't want to just push our and/or massacre all the others different groups, even if they have long been heavily staffed by members of one group. So yes realistically I'm for them pulling the country together because otherwise syrians will continue to be the victims of continued anarchy and warfare. Only people who believed in deceitful narratives could pretend that either the kurds could have a state (regional situation won't allow it, now at least) or that any of the islamic fanatic groupings with strings attached to other countries were "nice".
Who do you want to see governing there? Do you support using the kurds as cannon fodder, encouraging them to do their own brand of ethnic cleansing on the region for the creations of their own ethno-state, and pretending that is "nice"? While pretending to be concerned about minorities and all the other liberal bullfeathers-talk? Hey that might be worth it for some stability if it would work. but it cannot and it's only provoking more chaos in the region. Which is always the goal of the big empire wanting to control other areas: cause chaos so as to keep them frail and manipulable.

So Russia does it on their periphery too when their governments decides it's useful and worthwhile. At least they dinon't go halfway across the world to do it, they may actually have valid concerts there. Yes the war was avoidable if those concerns had been addressed instead of deliberately inflamed. The dogs barked indeed at the door, and got what they wanted to engineer. Cynical, very cynical. I recall german politicians, fully aware of the dangerous situation in Yuloslavia, breaking with the other concerned european governments that had been trying to defuse the situation and poring fuel into the fire there, they got what they wanted: Yugoslavia broken into easily digestible pieces. Apart from Serbia, which kept having top be broken further... Guess what, the russians noticed too. It caused a shift of policy there. Things are interconnected. And this now was a desired war, much as WW1 was a desired war for all governments involved. Crazies all of them!
And I've not been absolving anyone, I've been pointing out the false narratives and stupidities in this, which here are mostly aligned with the US-UK governments managed narratives. There's plenty of that. On the russian side at least as represented here, apart from doing an invasion and not calling it an invasion, there hasn't been much to point out in terms of unrealistic narrative. Even the management of the areas they occupied so far is proceeding without visible incident. The most you can point out in terms of failed russian government narrative is that civilians in Donetsk are still being bombed and killed by ukranian artillery, russian forces have not yet succeeded in making sure they're protected. But exposing that as a surrian failure also requires saying that the ukraknian army is deliberately bombing civilians - which you don't want to say, do you?

Back to the kurds, this is about Turkey, They don't have a chance against Turkey. Which means that the best thing for them is to gain some autonomy inside Iraq and Syria. Some time in the distant future they may or may not have their own country. The whole thing may even cease to make sense by then. But now they should do the best of their current situation and the best is not fighting a war they can't win. (which is an observation that also applied to Ukraine, that is the obvious parallel here)

new Turkey is heroically fighting forest fires . Again . Just like last year , where people on the ground in that "tourism province" declare there are "no planes" and "no helicopters" . Goverment says they are there and people either do not see them because the aircraft work a lot . Or people are traitors . Overall chief for propaganda say 59,2% of tweeting names that link to the fires are bots . At least they have contracts that say there will be aviation after July 1st . Last year there wasn't even that . With the secretary for agriculture of the palace cabinet (reportedly personally involved) in hiring Russian companies that had an opening after the organic capability in the country officially sabotaged .

the PM was in the air , in his helicopter , touring the area from the air . Last year he hadn't done that . Last year the economy wasn't as bad . People had less reason to talk about his monthly salary ... He has raised his wage 40% or so to 141 000 liras/a month . Not particularly high , considering his efforts to connect everything to his palace (to appear the country would clearly fail , return back to Stone Age , anything) have created offices that cost about 600 000 liras/an hour .

the Party is not very happy . Party says they can cut the PM's salary . Who in order to help retired MPs had passed a decree that fixed any raises in retirement payments with the raises he gives himself . If 3000 or so people and families agree , it might be done so . If the PM can't get 40% , nobody will ... It seems this 40% will be available for anyone after July . Having lived through such a vicious circle of extreme high inflation , any such raise only accelarates inflation . You run out of money before you get paid kind of thing . Like there will be 50% price hikes before you get your first payment with 40% increase ... Santa Turgut , famous for Opposition slogans of "Fat enemy of the workers" had managed to cut down the percentage the working masses got from the GNP . A-K-P apparently managed to do the same service to corporate fat cats ... Santa Turgut needed 7 years and that included the 1980 coup which naturally banned strikes and whatnot ... New Turkey did it in 3 years ...

the number of millionaires in recent years have gone up from 300 000 to 500 000 . Some by the Coranavirus era thefts as witnessed globally . Many more in the organized robbery by New Turkey . Congregation starts a big company ; one of those no doubt created by windfalls of the Ponzi schemes in the Santa Turgut era . (That robbed millions in the end , those private "bankers" promising to pay back at twice the interest rates of banks) The fallout of 2013-16 and it is taken over by the Goverment . And a trustee is now missing , with 20 million Euros . Uh , nobody was surprised . Nobody would have cared , if their wallets were not hurting ... New Turkey is indeed a Ponzi scheme . When people start to smell a collapse , they will leave the system ... Meaning the PM working hard to appear to be in charge , meaning an helicopter tour .

besides he didn't have the time . To land and have a tour on the ground ... The idiot to be the next ruler of Saudi Arabia , His Excellencies the Crownprince Mega BS was in country visiting . Some talk of "betrayal" after the Kaşıkçı affair , the disappearance of the former second in charge of the Saudi intelligence in the Saudi Consolate in lstanbul . As if "Muslims" ever recognize the word or the concept (this betrayal thing) for their own actions . Money is needed , Mega BS is a best brother . The number of cabinet secretaries at the airport was supposedly super high . Money was always loved , its necessity might just have increased . As freebies decrease people tend to re-evaluate their political beliefs . A lot of court cases in prospect and so on .

the joy of Mega BS had no limits . Visiting dignitaries get an honour guard . Traditions and all . Nobody expects everybody doing it right but many will try his/her hand at saying "Hello, Soldier" . Some will say it was a calculated thing , during the conversion of the multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire to a Nation State , with the use of Arabic language curtailed at every opportunity . Nobody will say Mustafa Kemal took part in the pre-1908 discussions for the future of the multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire . Which needed a lot of reforms and stuff . Which might have been funded by the Oil . Many officers were aware that there was an incredible amount of it in Ottoman territory . And the issue of foreigners moving to a specific part of Ottoman Empire with intense pressure to leave their original countries . These people then would be dispersed all over the country , not just that one specific part . Where their like natural abilities would mean that they would build and operate the oil industry . And the railroads the Ottoman Army would use to keep the Peace , whatever , anything . And the industry that would keep the Ottomans at least competitive with the other Great Powers . Some concept of citizenship to become the norm . The Military could no longer stay Muslim in its entirity . And mind you , there would be Christians as well ...

If Turkish phrase was impossible a nod by the head or a military salute would do . While New Turkey wants to badly destroy everything , it is New Turkey's brilliant handling of the economy that allows Mega BS doing that ...

this one alone would be like ignored as standart r16 bellyaching . Then , apparently it went even "better" ... That night PM's palace saw a reception . The Mega BS and company as the guests of honour . While the PM sat a different table , like near the door , with just one official next to him . Am pretty sure the chief propaganda guy "posted" the PM there , telling him it would be better for his reputation . Instead of pictured "feting" the murderer . You know who was globally shamed after the the so called national intelligence service taped Kaşıkçı being killed and cut into pieces . People say Mega BS was so hurt that he should be given some slack to insult this country , can you believe that ? And yeah , he had it all the way . Some specific Arab troupe brought in for the music . Top song ? Something about "This Saudi rises higher than all" ... Might not be the exact translation but supposedly says he is much higher than the PM ...

and of course the rumours are that the Saudis didn't pay a dime ... No sign of the supposed 50 billion US dollars in sight yet ...
