The British and Russian troops were had departed Japan. Japanese soldiers from Manchukuo and Korea were returning home. The mood of the people was somber. In a year Japan had gone from the greatest power in the world to a humiliated and conquered nation. But slowly they began to rebuild their lives and looked towards an uncertain future. For a moment it seemed Japan would quietly fade to a minor world power.
Nobody is certain who did what or who unleashed the demons but the events followed this general timeline. The Emperor Taisho was just arriving just outside gate to his palace, when suddenly there was a huge explosion that completely destroyed the Emperors car. Just a suddenly men with Red Bands on their arms (Japanese Communist Party) swarmed and occupied the palace grounds. Just a quickly men in army uniforms and civilians clothes with black bands on their arms (Japanese Fascists) began to assault the men within the palace. Soon all over Tokyo the red arm bands and black arm bands began to fight street battles. It did not take long for the disorder spread all over Japan. In many places warlords established their own independent power. Soon regular civilians began to join in the disorder by looting and attacking anybody associated with the old regimes. Tanks, Artillery, Poison Gas, and anything else were stolen from national armies and used against whomever. The entire nation of Japan had gone into a mental meltdown. All foreigners fled the country. The governments of Britain, Russian, and USCA were no longer certain that it was a good idea for the Japanese to determine their own destiny
Meanwhile in Southern China, General Shigeru Honjo began to gather, the Japanese armies from southern China, in Shanghi to send them on to Japan. General Honjo new there was a risk that these armies would join the chaos and cause even more destruction. But he also knew they might be Japans last hope for survival. General Honjo needed to test his mens loyalty before sending them back to Japan. He prepared a special speech which he began to deliver to his troops. Men! You have proven yourself valiant soldiers in China. You have defeated all armies placed before! Now you are being called to your greatest challenge. Suddenly a group of soldiers with red arm bands burst forward. We dont have to listen to you! Our loyalty is to the Communist party not the army of a defunct government. General Honjo drew his service pistol and quickly shot dead the leaders of this rebellious faction. The remaining men with red arm bands were quickly grabbed by officers and lined up against a wall and shot. General Honjo yelled Does anyone else think their loyalty does not belong to me! Not one solider moved. General Honjo said Excellent! Tomorrow we sail to Japan to restore order and kill more of these disloyal arm band wearing scum. The Soldiers yelled enthusiastically.
Latter that day Admiral Nomura was in his cabin on the flagship for the squadron in Shanghi. He had been humiliated at the peace conference. The Americans had escorted out like a common criminal. Then he was forced to sign a treaty that completely humiliated Japan. Now he was charged with escorting the last Japanese troops out of southern China. These troops would arrive in Japan and cause even more chaos. There was nothing he could do. If the troops were not removed from southern China, they would risk war with Great Britain. Ontop of that his own squadron was full of mutinous sailors that could rise up any moment and take over the ships. He was preparing to end his own life with a gun shot when there was a knock on the door. General Honjo wants a word with you. Admiral Nomura placed the pistol back in his desk and invited General Honjo into his cabin. They had long conversation about General Honjos plan. After General Honjo left. Admiral Nomura though long and hard about his choices. The next morning Admiral Nomura had the most mutinous sailors rounded up shot and thrown overboard. General Honjo watch these executions with satisfaction. Admiral Nomura had found his backbone. General Honjo began to feel more confident about his chances for success.
Over the next few days, the Japanese soldiers marched onto the transport and then finally set sail for Japan for an uncertain reception and future.
