Nuke Nes IX: Genesis and Armageddon

Adding onto my Culture Basis
Culture Name: Nannuk
Core Value: Honor
Location: Palestine/Isreal (Exiled to Cyrus "Kanuka")
Nation Names: Danuka, Shanuka, Kanuka, Vanuka, Ganuka (Lesser and Looser style Confederations dominated by a city), Herkanukurat, Banatukurat, Sanukurat (More centralized 'Empires' with various local governments enforced) Regerlas, Hamuran, Deyuntam (major Colonies+Home city)
City Names: Usually is the name of the man who made it powerful with nu, or "the site of", added: Capital of Dalak is Dalaknu, the site of Dalak. This shows one's great accomplishments
For stuff greater than city-states, a word of power is added. Danu-Dalak is the capital of the land of Danuka, lead by Dalaknu. Same with Shanuka, Kanuka (Cyrus), Vanuka and Ganuka,
-Kurat is Kur+at. Literally it would be the Divided, seperate, soveriegn (at) Union. In actually it usually stands for an enforced system of government where power is divided under the King (Federalish/Bureaucratic) instead of the King holding all the power (Autocratic), or the King threatening to. (Hegemonic). States made of an enforced union of lesser states, governership-style chief appointments ect are Kurats and named after their general landscape. Herkanuko is the waters of the Jordan River IRL (becomes Herkanukurat). Demkanukab is the sea of Galilee (becomes Demkanukurat). If it controls most of the Nannuk, and therefore many of these important landscapes, it is called Sanukurat: All Divided Cities' Union.
Ruler Names: Dalak, Serat, Kemad, Batan, Matak, Nerad, Mekad

Dominikan Orders:
Spoiler :

1. Expansion: Continue expanding across the Giant Land, also sail up to to expand into the Solomon Islands/Fiji/etc.

2. Even as many Dominika leave, at home, a chieftain named Dynus has united several city-states into a single Huntra Union. Continue trying to get some cohesion among the Dominikan city-states.

3. In the Giant Land, some Dominika believe they can make tools from bronze they have found.

4. The Dominika have constructed a series of tall towers with flares burning at the top called "Firetowers" (aka Lighthouses) They mark the sites of villages along the coasts.

5. Continue trying to build an agricultural base.

6. Nuke, I will PM the detalis of the Dominikan religion later.

Spoiler :
Thralingence

Expansion: Have 25% of the population of each settlement under our culture split away from the settlement in order to provide the settlers needed for a mass settling of the south. Have warriors escort them south, conquering any other people already there, and making them Thrlaingence from various means as well, including threats, indoctrination, and marriage to Thralingence people so that their children grow up as part of our culture.

Focus 1: Learn to find and tame horses from the wild, and breed the fastest ones so as to create an army of speedy, yet strong horses to use both in battle, and when not at war, for peaceful purposes such as farming. Make sure any that go to war are armored.

Focus 2: Again, try for the multiple settlements to become united under one banner. (If I wrote up a back story to this, such as who was doing the uniting, how they were united, etc, would it help the chances of becoming united rather than just saying become more centralized?)

Thralingence Culture

Thralingence culture was almost universally similar, yet, it had 3 subtle divides that had thus far prevented complete unity. Multiple settlements belong to each of these divides. The first divide was that of the Southerners, commonly called Southrine. This 'subculture' as it may be called for lack of a better word, was less warlike than its northern brothers, yet it kept most of the old traditions such as every person should be a capable fighter, raised form birth, etc. The key difference to the Southrine, was that they did not believe in their women to be regular fighters. They started training in weaponry late, normally around 14 or 15, and were only expected to fight if the battle came to the settlement itself, or sometimes among its outskirts. This caused many Southrine women to be looked down upon by their northern brethren, and was mainly caused by the intermarriages caused when Thralingence culture took over some of the lesser villages and cottages in the southern lands.

Another divide, or subculture, would be those of the coasts , mainly of the northern coasts. These people were among the fiercest warriors the culture could produce, yet they were different from the original traditions in that they were they were the only people who fought on the seas as well as on land. They built ships, not too big of course, but ships nonetheless, and were the ones who discovered there was an island to their southwest to exploit in the future. This was not to say they were not formidable fighters on land as well, but that they were more well rounded, and not limited like their highland brothers and sisters to land warfare. They also preferred longer one story buildings compared to the many storied houses in the south and the great buildings among the hills favored by the highlanders.

The final divide is closest to the original form of Thralingence that first took root in this world. They live in the hills and the mountains, and have learned how to farm on ths lopes in order to sustain their peoples. they do not know how to swim unless they have traveled to the coast to learn, yet they place emphasis on thick armor when they fight, although they like swords and axes that are very quick and fast compared to the heavier, more powerful ones used in the south. Many have even shaped smaller knives as they call them, and have learned to throw them across distances to weaken the enemy before their warriors strike them.

Together, they are perhaps the fiercest fighters by skill and dedication upon this planet.

@Arya, stories always help, but keep in mind, this is a 500 year period. An Empire can be created and destroyed in far less time. But still, it couldn't hurt :)

Surnit Orders 2:

Spoiler :
After the current Kiman dies, a new Kiman was chosen from the council of advisers. Some people, seeing the growing of the power of the Adviser Council, began to protest. As the government did nothing to answer to the population, a man by the name of Sun-Wik led a group of them south, to establish a new society focused on the more traditional views of Surnit society.

Expansion: The new kingdom will exist to the south, while the Kingdom of Rilkas will send people across the sea, to the Chinese coast.

Focus 1: The Kiman had studied architecture before he served on the council, and it still interested him. The wise men were focused on learning how to create more stable buildings, that would last longer.

Focus 2: As the first colony is set up in China, people began to think the current ships in the navy need to be strengthed, to survive longer journeys.

The Army of Serat Kanabmut
The Exile Years
By the time of the kingship of Serat Kanabmut on the throne of Kanu-Dalak on Kanuka (considered a highpoint of the Kanuka State), the Nannukitte state is once more in flux. Generations have passed since the first, ragged refugees, burning with vows of vengence, first landed upon the fertile land. Centuries have passed since they first broke opened the land, hunted down the few locals, and the consolidation of power by Kanab to establish the hegemonic lordship of the Kanabmut over the land of Kanuka.

Now, land is scarce as their populations doubled and doubled again. Every year young men mobilized, some clashing with their neighbors in battles ranging from 'sports' to nearly open warfare, dampened only by the observation of Kanabmut sentries. Others begin hiring boats from Kanu-Dalak harbors to raid far afield in small expeditions, seeking different peoples to fight. Pirates, as they would have been called by their victims, raided the Ut, the Cekmek and even as far afield as the Confederacy. Many died, unused to life at sea, but many other prospered.

When King Serat ordered all his boats to return, the call was answered grudgingly as his Floating Colonies lumbered through the eastern Mediterranean, boasting the flag of Canuka. Within five years, he placed them on pay under himself and formed the first experienced Nannuk fleet: disorganized and undisciplined by any standard at all, but deadly and eager for battle. These complemented his small and inexperienced Household Fleet used to destroy any attempt by another city to establish harbors, forges or walls.

Serat's land armies were inherited from generations of Kanabmut hoarding. The great city of Kanu-Dalak, despite its stable and sedentary nature, lost none of its militaristic background. Ritualistic fighting slowly gave way to both full-scale battles (in the countryside) and to sports (within the cities, especially this one). Individual athletes came gain the honor once held by Champions of yore, while battles slowly became a communal task. With everyman conditioned by frequent labor, sporting exercise, and constant training. Every so often, the a segment of the population (called by a number of men per household) is called up for military training, or rarely, intervention. Thus, the Kanabmut had left Serat with the large, blunt instrument that has served their hegemony so well; Composed of reservists eager for battle, trained occasionally in formations and retrained before battle, this large force formed the core of Serat's army.

A second, more hardened but less disciplined force comes form the Kanukan countryside. War is common, and everyman has experienced at least two campaigns if he dies of old age. Although the Kanabmut Hegemony prevents any victory spoils other than pillaging of perepherial towns or certification of various claims, this does not stop the Nannuk lords from fighting wars even for such scraps as a well, a watchtower, or a section of an ancient stone wall. Levies of hardy peasants (who still fought in ritualistic combat themselves when neither the Lords or Hegemonic Sentries were watching) supplemented the core composed of faux- phalanxs like those of Kanu-Dalak. Whenever a large rouge-raid on Kanuka, or perhaps an attempted landing by one of the nearby nations occurs, these were called up and organized into one large army by the Kanabmut kings.

The faux-Phalanx, so called due to the fact that it only copied the form, and not the function of the Ut Phalanx. Indeed, they wield shields, spears (which the addition of a long, slicing axe blade), close-combat swords. Indeed, they fight in formation to defend each other: but this is where the Nannuk Phalanx is different. Theirs is a wedge, a sharp instrument to pierce an enemy formation. The glory-seekers would occupy the tip, followed by the Chief and his retinue on the center and the edges. The levies provided momentum on the wide center as well as additional firepower form thrown javelins. The skirmishers were more heavy infantry with ranged weapons, as after the Wedge strikes upon the enemy, they form their own wedges to attack the enemy flanks. This is the main formation used by the Kanukan Nannuk during the Exile years, and battles mostly range from the maneuvering of wedges to strike at another's flank, and usually end when a wedge breaks into individual combat against another wedge's charge (which then often splits into smaller wedges based on individual initiative), then routs in disgrace from the enemy formation. If the battle rages for the others, some may attempt to protect neighboring wedges from being flanked by the victorious enemy while others reform a new one or just simply run. Just one breakthrough is needed to force an enemy lord to talk, or a rebellious lord to suicide.

And so is the state of Serat's Armies, which he can number on 10 full Wedge-companies from Kanu-Dalak, and 30 from the lords of the countryside during the hight of his power.

Abba Clothing

Due to the extreme heat, the Abba were limited in their clothing. However, the clothes they had were very valuable in a monetary and cultural sense. Every Abba, regardless of sex, or status, had a Ziyek. The Ziyek was incredibly important, for it linked the Abba to their ancestors, as it was handed down from the father to the eldest child. It was an essential fathers responsibility to purchase a Ziyek for his other children (Cheaper due to not belonging to a ancestor, but still quite expensive). If an orphan or a child with a father who could not afford a Ziyek (a mark of great shame), and they entered into service of someone, it was the Master or Mistress's responsibility to provide a Ziyek.

A Ziyek was a large piece of cloth with holes for the head, arms and legs (almost like a poncho). With the sole exception of war, the Ziyek was always the most outer garment worn, for it said so much of the person. A common Ziyek was tan in color, though incredibly faded. The tan Ziyek was the status of farmers, those who worked the land. White was for merchants and scholars, and, since most bureaucrats came from the Merchant and scholar class, a thin purple stripe was added to their Ziyek. The Prii wore purple, the Royal family wore blue, Priests wore black, and the Eros wore an incredibly ornate red Ziyek. The Ziyek of the Eros had the story of the Abba people on it, starting with the Sun giving birth to the Sun God, the Sun God subjugating the other gods, the Sun God creating the world, and the Sun God producing his heir in the form of the First Eros, Iro. The Ziyek is kept at Lay-An-Au-Shek, and the recognition to rule the Abba comes from that Ziyek. No matter what rivalries are held, the Ziyek of the Eros is sacred, and it cannot be defiled.

@Vertinari, TheLoser, can you specify where please? :)

@All, let's try to have the update Friday/Saturday, shall we? :)

I did say the Eurasian Steppe, which is technically a location albeit a rather vague one. Hmm... starting around Lake Balkhash would seem good. Its nicely located roughly half-way between the Eastern and Western cultures and gives me a large amount of steppe to roam around. Its the curved lake, almost like a sickle blade on the map, to the east of the Aral Sea in case you're uncertain. Still contemplating the exact form the Almek religion will take so a detailed description will have to wait till tomorrow, and this time I mean it! It would certainly be a panentheistic religion with women as religious leaders. It would, in a similar manner to Hinduism, feature one God whose different aspects are made incarnate, thus there are multiple gods and one God. Another way to look at it would be the Christian Trinity. God can be three distinct things and yet they are all the same thing, God. It would have a slight preoccupation with death and the afterlife as an honour-bound culture with different fragmented tribes vying for power in a hostile land is likely to lead to death. Funeral rights would be elaborate and depend on how the individual died, his or her character and his standing in life amongst other things. It would also contain embedded in it a relatively strict moral code to prevent needless deaths in a harsh land where life is precious. Orders will also come tomorrow.

Did you want the more centralized, major states spending their various "points" on things; EG 3 military "points" to this conquest, 4 economy to this project, etc? Writing orders tonight but will adjust/post tomorrow after this question has been answered.

(Going out of town tomorrow afternoon until monday evening. Let's not have too many updates without me :0)

No, same thing as last time, those are just comparisons for you to mull about with

@Vertinari, TheLoser, can you specify where please? :)

@All, let's try to have the update Friday/Saturday, shall we? :)

Put the starting area on Timur if possible!

Thanks!

Nehiimet Orders
Spoiler :
Primary expansion: Xen (Oregon), claimed during the q’ay’ec under K’amk’em Key’exen-tse-tenex
Secondary expansion: continue expanding along the coasts and rivers

During the beginning of this 500 year period, a K’amk’em Key’exen-tse-tenex war leader became the head chief of the Nehiimet and used a combination of war and social change to help centralize power over the four tribes. He used the changes to the tribes’ structures in the preceding centuries to augment his power. Each tribe now has a lesser version of the head chief that serves as an advisor to the head chief and helps to carry out any orders among their respective tribes. The tribes continue to become more and more defined by the jobs of their members. At this point they are akin to giant union-families or cooperatives.
The other major activity of K’amk’em Key’exen-tse-tenex’s rule was the first war of ashes declared by the Nehiimet in several centuries. The q’ay’ec was against several minor tribes in Xen specifically around the obsidian deposits. K’amk’em Key’exen-tse-tenex was afraid their warriors may begin to use it and deplete the Nehiimet’s supply. The war lasted for two and a half years before Xen was claimed for the Nehiimet and the local tribes were all killed or driven off.
The other notable leader of this time period was S. She came from the craftsman section of the Xeneleqen the First tribe and was responsible for the wide-range of masks that are in use in Nehiimet culture today. These masks are used in rituals, politics, to denote leadership or honors, in warfare, by dancers, and at gathers such as joinings and funerals.

Nehiimet Warfare:

Teq: Teq are ritualized raids and are very common for the Nehiimet; as the tribes have become more united the teq against fellow Nehiimet have dramatically decreased and instead the warriors have headed into the surrounding areas. Teq serve two purposes. The first of these is to gain honor as a warrior. This can be done by performing acts of bravery, defeating a well-known enemy, avenging a family member, or capturing an enemy. The second purpose of teq is to increase the population of Nehiimet tribes. When the tribes were smaller (before the extensive use of agriculture) they often needed extra manpower and would capture it from neighbors. Now the captured people are taught specialties and accepted into the tribes or used to augment the lower Nehiimet population in areas of new expansion. Raiding is an acceptable practice in most of the tribes in the area around the Nehiimet and as such captured enemies are very willing to assimilate into the new tribe and become productive and loyal members.

Q’ay’ec: Q’ay’ec are much more serious affairs than teq. A q’ay’ec my only be declared by the head chief of the Nehiimet and is used to completely kill or drive off a rival tribe. These are much less frequent then teq and are used to gain land for the Nehiimet in areas that are already settled (there are few of these areas near the Nehiimet, though they are becoming more common as other tribes advance.) The q’ay’ec have also been used against the few tribes the Nehiimet have encountered who do not practice ritualized raiding and therefore are of little use if captured since they will not assimilate.

Tactics: There are relatively few rules regarding what is acceptable; during teq the leader of the raid often chooses the battle formation he feels is best and once the raid begins things typically become a very large melee fight. The only thing that is explicitly forbidden during teq is to turn down a challenge from an opponent of lower or equal reputation. This allows newer warriors to gain favor by challenging those above them while preventing veterans from challenging weaker opponents for an easy win. Shields are frowned upon during teq as cowardly. During q’ay’ec, when the objective is to destroy the opponent, shields are frequently used. Q’ay’ec have extensive preparation involved, leaders for different battalion are chosen weeks in advance and each battalion is drilled in their leaders choice of tactic. With the incorporation of dance into the Nehiimet culture, battalions are often trained in war dances to frighten and demoralize the enemy before hand. Also, dancers are added to each battalion with large pieces of cloth to dance with during the battle and relay messages between leaders.

Dress: Dress is more for intimidation and less for protection in Nehiimet warfare. The only armor that is common is wooden and confined to the lower body and forearms. Warfare is one of the few times the Nehiimet wear shoes that have been strengthened more than the traditional fur boots. The warriors spend hours before each battle painting themselves with patterns that help them distinguish friends from enemies as well as providing religious protection. The most important item for Nehiimet however is the masked helmet; carved from hardwood and worked on for weeks by craftsmen, these helmets represent anything ranging from ancestors, to animals, to spirits. In colder areas/seasons and during q’ay’ec the Nehiimet warriors don cloth armor over their upper body. This armor is made from about a dozen cotton layers that are sealed together with resin or other glues. The armor’s advantages lie in its flexible nature and ability to stop arrows, small lances, and stone slashing/hacking weapons. It offers little protection against obsidian or blunt weapons however.

Weapons: The most common weapons of q’ay’ec warfare are the obsidian sword and the lance. Serrated obsidian spears also exist. Both weapons are created using obsidian and can easily slice through a man. These weapons are designed to kill and are used only during q’ay’ec. For hunting, fishing, and teq the obsidian sword is most often replaced by a solid wood cudgel or a spear and the lance by the bow and arrow. The arrows and spears may be tipped with obsidian but unlike the q’ay’ec are designed to be lethal only if necessary.

(I imagine the q’ay’ec weapons being similar to Aztec weaponry. Obsidian swords meant to represent maquahuitl, serrated spears are meant to represent tepoztopilli, and lances are roughly equivalent to atl atl. Historically, the atl atl allowed lances up to nine feet long to be launched over 100 meters with enough force to pass complete through a conquistador in full armor. The tepoztopilli and maquahuitl when used as slashing weapons could cut through metal armor or decapitate horses. The cloth armor represents something similar to the cloth armor of the Mediterranean area that Alexander the Great is often depicted wearing. It could deflect all arrows of the time period and almost allow sword and axe blows.)

Spoiler Higelante Orders Turn 2 :

1. Start building big boats that can sail across the English Channel. Aspiring warlords may set up small colonies on Skouthande (Britain, primarily Cornwall) in order to increase their power and gain new weapons

2. Create a new religion (IT IS SOMEWHAT BASED OFF OF SPIRITISM, BUT SCREW IT, WE'LL DO IT LIVE!) called Xyonkite. Part of traditional Higelante faith is that people who lived a brave and honorable life will have their souls roam the Earth after death. Cowards and dishonorable people will instead have their souls to dissipate, and become a life force used by those who made it to the other side. In order to help teach people the way, a soldier known as Xyon supposedly had a divine inspiration when injured on the field of battle. He could feel his soul trying to leave his body, but ultimately failed. But Xyon supposedly saw the souls of the dead, who told him that his purpose was to enlighten the people. They gave Xyon the knowledge of how to live the correct live, and they entrusted him to preach it. Xyon then wrote down what they gave him, and called it "The Creed of Life".

The Creed of Life contained philosophy such as "A ruler who backs down from a threat into his territory or people, than that ruler is not so, and will never see the other side" and "The only way to regain your honor after an insult is to equally insult the insulter. Too little regains no honor, and too many will cause him to have to match or surpass yours, unless if he deserves no honor". The book also teaches the superiority of freedom over security, and critical thinking over blind faith in something.

Like Buddhism, there is no actual deity or anything else to worship. Instead, it is more of an honor code to live by. Priests serve the important task of studying, and therefore, interpretation of, the Creed. They then use the knowledge to rule on matters retaining on honor.

Still need orders from TLK, CelticFury, ZeletDude, LOE off the top of my head

If I may speak for him, I'm fairly sure me and LoE are busy with our NES's currently. When do you need orders by?

Thanks TLK, that point is accurate. I will try to get in orders tomorrow, but we'll see. My access to Internet on the road will be dubious.

If you had them in tonight/tommorow, I could still have the update Saturday :)

Sorry if I'm rushing you guys :(

OOC: Omega I have 2 problems with your orders. One, the Buddha is the diety of Buddhism, so you cant go and say it has no deity. Sorry. Just a little nitpick. Secondly though, if you expand into England war will come between our peoples. France has plenty of land for you. Stay away from us and we will leave you be.
