Off Topic reorganization

If it is an april fools then it's a really bad one compared to earlier years, it might even backfire if they reverse it. We haven't even had a single poster descending into paranoid spam-posting about the moderators destroying the forum. Actually, everyone seems to be either happy about it or indifferent.

A reverse april fools where everyone thinks it's a joke but it's actually the real deal is indeed just about the only thing they could pull out of their hats to top earlier years and people actually falling for it.

One thing is for sure, I will take nothing for certain until April 2.

Ooh, can we have the tags back now please? You can infract for their misuse in Serious and let Light have its merry way with them, and the Civ-related forums would also get them back so they might become useful again.

Wouldn't happen, and i recall the tag system being monstrously abused, so there is no reason to bring it back.

@Leoreth- Yeah, I get that concern, so I'm hoping people will open their new threads here. Civilium isn't meant to be some completely high brow venue, just a place where you actually engage in discussion. The standards aren't all that different than the old OT, but we'll aim to exclude people who destroy threads or lower their tone. I'm hoping that's enough inducement for people to want to post their threads here. The way I see it is that by providing the alternative, where people can opt out of the normal accepted and expected discussion standard, we can actually make political threads and such better without having to be exclusive or anything.

You don't have to have some remarkable insight to post in this forum. We are not applying an RD standard to all threads. It's just a matter of being more stringent with people who ruin threads and constantly bicker.

(I also just moved the Graphs & Charts thread here, because yeah, that's actually pretty good stuff. It just caught up with the rest of the things I was moving over)
Okay, I think we have to wait how people will actually react to the split. It's just that I fear that it'll end similar to RD threads, which were used seldomly, apparently because OPs were afraid it would turn off posters. I'm afraid that OT-serious will suffer the same fate, just that instead of an underused RD marker we'll have a dead forum.

So, if the OP puts it in the FT forum, where it degrades into spam, pointless confrontations and the like, that's their business. :p

OTOH if you want to discuss the same subject seriously, you can always start a thread on it over here, where we'll keep an eye as always.
That's a rather theoretical argument, because you said the same about RD threads and that didn't really happen. People just stopped making RD threads.

I also disagree that the OP is the only one who should decide the level of moderation a topic receives.

No-one has started a thread in this forum though. I don't think anyone wants to vote for more moderation, we have enough issues with it as is.

Of course we're serious. The timing is merely coincidental.

Since when have you seen me make such a joke concerning serious forum issues?
That's just it. It's April 1st, and you're here. It's a joke. I'm 99.99999% sure of it.

tl;dr (never thought I'd ever post that, but this time it fits)

Happy April Fools' to you, too, ori et. al

*yawn*
:goodjob:

More moderation means more moderated than the spammier version. I don't even want to say the old OT standards will apply, I'm trying to change that. Deletion and/or short bans instead of playing the infraction game.

I'd say this is not an April Fool's joke, just fortuitous timing. But we've been saying that and no one seems to believe it. :(

You'll keep up the pretence until tomorrow, we all know that.

Are Tom Petty threads allowed in the taberna?

If this is an April Fool joke its not a particularly good one.

Cool Beans.

I'm thinking the only people who will post threads in this forum are the kind of people who say things like "Let's have a sensible discussion about abortion; I'm pro-life, but those Doctors should be killed, and women are sluts".

It would have worked better if you had hidden the old forum. Right now it might as well sport a "closed for April Fool's, will be open 4/2/2012" sign.

Plus we already have a "srs discussion" group: Ideas are like stars. Gather all of them in one place, and thank them for weeding themselves out from the general public.

They decide by deciding which forum it goes in....
And that's exactly what I'm criticizing. There should be an objective standard for moderation or we'll get a race to the bottom similar to that of RD threads.

[I'll stop arguing now until I'm certain this isn't an April Fool's joke so I don't make even more of a fool of myself in case it really is ;)]

That's why I said if you don't like the choice made by the OP, you can start the same subject thread in the other forum... Or is that too much trouble for you? :p

Is anyone going to start a thread in the serous OT though? I think you haven't thought this through.

It is not more moderation - it is moderation as it is. Think of this as the normal, old OT.

You guys complain when we keep the status quo. And complain when we try something a little different. Geez...
