Oh, the weather outside is...

Massive forest fires to the north and west, firefighters from Poland, Germany and France have joined. Planes and helicopters from Italy, France, Portugal, Norway and Lithuania have been called in to help. Talks of national emergency and actions in parliament to speed-process legislation to allow armed forces to step in.

Whose armed fgrces?

No people injured (much less killed) in the fires, but some communities evacuated for weeks by now. Artwork removed from 11th c. church in at least one village to preserve it, if it turns out the fires cannot be contained.

So, at least not as bad as poor Greece where about 100 dead.

Unusually hot here in UK. They are arguing whether hotter than in 1976.

Just had my car air conditioning, that stopped working in 2015, re-gassed yesterday.

Whose armed fgrces?
Ours.

The navy and army both have helicopters that could be used to chuck water at the blazes, but these formally cannot be released for such service since this is not a military matter but a concern for the civilian authorities. There are legal constraints in place against the use of military in the domains that fall under civilian authority.

Curious bit of oversight.

There are some army helicopters already taking part, but the crews are all-volunteer. The armed forces are prohibited from ordering its personel to take part in civilian efforts like this.

Edit:
And apparently interesting things are happening. The airforce has conducted a curious "experiment". A Gripen has bombed one of the blazes as one possible way of starving the fire of oxygen. The preliminary reports seem positive, apparently it worked, but no more bombings have been scheduled. The bombing run was conducted against the forest fire that struck an army firing range. It seems there were special conditions for doing this to a military installation.

Currently looking at hail slightly smaller than golf balls out my window right now. Never seen it like this before.

Whoa, hope if you have a car it's under some kind of cover. Stay safe.

It just started to rain here since IDK how long.
Yesterday there was a new drought record here in NL with a shortage of 261 mm rainfall over 2018, surpassing the 1976 record.

It's finally decided to pour down here too and it will likely chuck it down all morning.

Thought i could get some yardwork done. The weather had other ideas....Heavy Rain and some Hail.

We had a monsoon today in Sweden. Thats new.

Can you have a one day monsoon?

July has been good for our dry conditions. Thunder showers many nights all month. While we are still behind for the year, we are ahead of last July's rainfall.

Well to quote wikipedia the term is sometimes used inaccurately for locally heavy but short term rains. Anyone think this might be whats occurred here?

A rather pleasant day today.
At no point did the temperature exceed 30°C or threaten to reach 40°C.

Its not a pleasant day if the temperature reaches 30 if you ask me (must be losing it, can't find the degree symbol on my keyboard)

Usually I prefer around 20, but last week it was rarely below 35 and we had two or three days when it was 38.

Shift + whatever ^ is called.
Just below Esc, to the left of 1.
AT least on my keyboard.

I've only ever used superscript-O or just <number> C.

Use the superscript code:

Code:
[sup]o[/sup]

The "o" will be raised slightly after the number.

As in 25o is out of my comfort zone (too hot).

"Monsoon-like conditions" then?

Heavy rainfall very quickly, and still very warm. Tropical nights. Normally we'd expect rainfall to bring a considerable drop in temperature. It's gone below the 30° C range, but not by all that much.

Edit:
Apparently the figures are in, and turns out we (where I'm at in Sweden) got a whopping 82 mm of rain yesterday (it was a LOT, quickly, after two months of bone-dry conditions), making it the most rained on part of Europe in the last 24 hours. :)

Yes, well, we're on the same latitude as Alaska and Kamchatka. There are thunderstorms and then there are thunderstorms up in these parts. :undecide:

Just got another helping of storm-strength gusts and massive, horizontal, rain. The man who installed the AC once upon a time (life-saver these last weeks) clearly did not bother to make the wall he put it through in any way proof against winds forcing that much water directly against it. (Solid timber wall with insulation good for down to at least -30° C, but that's suddenly not what's being asked of it.)

Water has now run in through the wall above the window from that combination of wind and rain. Might have to open it up and find out what's what there...
