Massive forest fires to the north and west, firefighters from Poland, Germany and France have joined. Planes and helicopters from Italy, France, Portugal, Norway and Lithuania have been called in to help. Talks of national emergency and actions in parliament to speed-process legislation to allow armed forces to step in.

Whose armed fgrces?

No people injured (much less killed) in the fires, but some communities evacuated for weeks by now. Artwork removed from 11th c. church in at least one village to preserve it, if it turns out the fires cannot be contained.

So, at least not as bad as poor Greece where about 100 dead.

Unusually hot here in UK. They are arguing whether hotter than in 1976.

Just had my car air conditioning, that stopped working in 2015, re-gassed yesterday.

Ours.

The navy and army both have helicopters that could be used to chuck water at the blazes, but these formally cannot be released for such service since this is not a military matter but a concern for the civilian authorities. There are legal constraints in place against the use of military in the domains that fall under civilian authority.

Curious bit of oversight.

There are some army helicopters already taking part, but the crews are all-volunteer. The armed forces are prohibited from ordering its personel to take part in civilian efforts like this.

And apparently interesting things are happening. The airforce has conducted a curious "experiment". A Gripen has bombed one of the blazes as one possible way of starving the fire of oxygen. The preliminary reports seem positive, apparently it worked, but no more bombings have been scheduled. The bombing run was conducted against the forest fire that struck an army firing range. It seems there were special conditions for doing this to a military installation.

July has been good for our dry conditions. Thunder showers many nights all month. While we are still behind for the year, we are ahead of last July's rainfall.

Usually I prefer around 20, but last week it was rarely below 35 and we had two or three days when it was 38.

Heavy rainfall very quickly, and still very warm. Tropical nights. Normally we'd expect rainfall to bring a considerable drop in temperature. It's gone below the 30° C range, but not by all that much.

Apparently the figures are in, and turns out we (where I'm at in Sweden) got a whopping 82 mm of rain yesterday (it was a LOT, quickly, after two months of bone-dry conditions), making it the most rained on part of Europe in the last 24 hours.

Yes, well, we're on the same latitude as Alaska and Kamchatka. There are thunderstorms and then there are thunderstorms up in these parts.

Just got another helping of storm-strength gusts and massive, horizontal, rain. The man who installed the AC once upon a time (life-saver these last weeks) clearly did not bother to make the wall he put it through in any way proof against winds forcing that much water directly against it. (Solid timber wall with insulation good for down to at least -30° C, but that's suddenly not what's being asked of it.)

Water has now run in through the wall above the window from that combination of wind and rain. Might have to open it up and find out what's what there...
