Olso, Norway, hit by explosions

In the end, does it matter which terrorist/terrorist organization perpetrated the bombings? Because in the end, you still have possibly 30+ dead people in a relatively peaceful city that were killed senselessly by some sort of monster, no matter his ideology. So stop bickering whether if he has a beard and speaks Arabic versus a blonde-haired Scandanavian, and start praying/hoping/making sense of the situation in Oslo.
It's a tragedy and an awful crime. Who did it and why is still significant. This will affect Scandinavia in one way or another.

Looking at the video footage, and pictures, this is just devastating.

My sympathies go out to all Norwegians.

The Islamist org taking responsibility for the terror act earlier, has withdrawn their claim.

Man in police uniform seen on bomb site 2 minutes before explotion, wearing a helmet and "looking like he was carrying something under his uniform" according to a witness.

Why attack Utøya tough? Attack on the Labour Party?
Lone, crazy guy with a grudge against the Labour Party.

They've taken him alive, so we might find out his reasons. Doubt they will sound very reasonable though...

It's quite clear this isn't an "Islamist" attack.

The shooter has been identified by the police, but no details have been made public.

Witnesses claim that many more dead people are lying around the island and in the water surrounding it than the official figure suggests. :(

Yeah, but that's not what people who have no need to investigate should be doing, like every single member of Off-Topic. Bickering over who committed the attacks just ignores who died today. Tomorrow, focus all you want on the consequences and the attacker or whatever.

Sounds like you were spot on. Just some political nutcase who prefers violence to the vote as a means of change.

What's sad is he might get labelled as an anarchist, when any anarchist extremist wouldn't care who was in power to begin with.

Or at least, that's how we in the United States often label such attacks from my memory.

Well, he's guaranteed a life sentence I'm sure, so really, what else can I say?

Indeed.

Sad to see this happen in such a pleasant part of the world, but the Norwegians are a fine people, and I have faith their cool heads will prevail.

Not guarnteed. Maxiumum penalty is 21 years, however if he is deemed crazy, wich he probably is, he can be kept in jail as long as he is considerd a threat to society.

With 10 people confirmed killed at Utøya so far, it seems the total number from today is now 17. However that could still go up.

On the other hand, to quote Arne Garborg (ahem):

So vere vigd til Hel
kvar redde svikarsjæl
i Norigs land.
Kvar den som trulaust fór
mot heim og fedrajord -
dømd vere han.

Heng han i neste tre
Grav han som pestfengd ned
på ubygd øy.
Og ingen gravstein grå
på denne haugen stå
hans navn i gløyme gå
hans minne døy!

(Attempt at translation:

So, let be wed to Hell
each fearful traitor's soul
in Norway's land.
Each who faithless went
against fathers' home and soil -
let him be damned.

Hang him from the nearest tree.
Bury him, as plagued,
on a waste island.
And raise no stone
upon his grave.
Oblivion take his name,
remember him not.

Or something like that. Basically the only bit I don't agree with here is the hanging. I wish this guy a long life in a structured environment, from which he may see whatever his cause may be wither and turn to dust and blow away and be forgotten.)

It's been confirmed he is Norwegian

It's quite clear this isn't an "Islamist" attack.

But earlier you said:

UPDATE: jihadist forums say a group called "HELPERS OF THE GLOBAL JIHAD" might be responsible for the attacks in norway

Still awaiting confirmation.

Has this been confirmed or denied yet? I didnt see anything in the thread between your two posts to indicate it either way.

It's been confirmed he is Norwegian

Couldnt he still be Norwegian and a muslim?

They originally claimed responsibility for it, but later retracted it.

He could be a Muslim, not denying it.

I heard their claim to the act was withdrawn, as stated earlier.

There is no doubt in my mind who is behind the attacks. But I'll wait for the media to confirm my beliefs before I get flamed for my political "incorrectness".

And who are behind them, according to you?

If you look at the media, they've all been quick to point the finger at Muslims and Islamist groups, so I doubt you'll get "flamed".
