On Intellectual Participation

Why do you NOT participate in developing specific NESes or NES concepts in general?

I dislike how if you do not agree with an idea, rather than accept other ideas may exist, and looking into the options, you are shot down.

"If you don't AGREE and want to help, shove off"

Actually if that's about the whole Animal Husbandry (capitalization for CIV's sake) thing, it was more like they (all who went against your idea) shot it down not because they refused to accept the existence of your different idea/option, but rather because they don't find at all remotely grounded in reality then shot it down.

Oh, wasn't talking about that.. I didn't consider that discussion anything to do with NES.

Nope... well not for me anyway.

I was banned during the initial discussion, which was mainly from DaftsNES and people trying to domesticate animals in america.

Elephants got in the way.. not sure why.

Once I was unbanned I merely asked why Symp decided he was an authority on it above all others. Turns out he has read a book

i use to participate. But then i started playing wow. Seemed more enjoyable to kill gnomes. Now I just play a couple NES's

EDIT: I just read your rather long winded post one Pg. 3. I would like to point out one key term that you used. NESing is a Hobby. One can put however much time and effort into a Hobby as one desires because it is done at a persons liesure. No one has an obligation to you, or me, or anyone else to put forth more effort and participate more. The fact is, people DO have reason to not put forth effort or participation, since this IS a Hobby.

Those are the facts that I see.

That's true enough unless the hobby requires the input of some thirty odd people to functional successfully. You can't play football, or baseball, or soccer, or hockey, or any other multi-person sport by yourself.

People constantly complain lately that not much is happening in NESing, and wonder why. The answer is simple: look in a mirror. Few people are putting in much effort. Everybody else is just sitting around waiting for somebody else to do it so they don't have to. So no, you don't have an obligation to anybody to put in any kind of effort at all--it's just that when everybody thinks that way, nothing gets done, and the hobby collapses.

It has continued the way it has because a relatively large number of people have played parasite to a relatively small number of people who are more dedicated. When those people are unavailable for whatever reason, effort hits a bottleneck--which is precisely what occurred during most of the month of July.

My premise is basically that if you aren't willing to contribute to what's occurring, you have no real basis for decrying the state of the community or saying how it should operate (of course you can--but nobody has any reason to listen).

So why not Join the Alliance and come roleplay on Blackwater Raiders with me EQ Nailix and bestshot?

Sry to hijack.

To further illustrate Symphony's point, which I agree with wholeheartedly:

Alright I'm going to get out of my apathy and ignorance to engage in some discussion here.

People constantly complain lately that not much is happening in NESing, and wonder why.

Who is complaining? Not me, nor anyone in any of the NESes I look at. Maybe the people who are complaining are the same 20% you say who talk about these things. If so then the other 80% of us simply don't care about communal "advancement" or "effort" or whatever because maybe its not really that important. And what do you mean by parasite? That the 80% of us just play these games and write stories instead of analyzing and investigating if what we're doing is fun enough? Also what do you mean by bottleneck, there are at least 15 currently running NESes if not more.

I'm not complaining, but okay, I will be more active in developing NESes.

Match up is pretty much zero based on the poll.

You're right, improving things is always a bad idea. They should stay the same way forever. Addressing problems or issues that come up is terrible for making things more fun, accessible, and open. Choice is wrong! FREEDOM IS SLAVERY! WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH NESKIND!

No, the 80% that offer no creative input whatsoever, no matter how pathetically little time it would take them to do so when asked how to solve the very sorts of problems they constantly whine about, however obtusely.

Right, because now is July...

Amazing that it doesn't stop people from complaining though, isn't it?[/QUOTE]

1) Yes my focus is very limited thank you for clarifying my outspoken apathy.

2) I stand corrected.

3) I never said progress was bad, only that progress is subjective. For example you and many people spent a lot of time trying to create fancy new maps that I don't care about because I don't have the imaging programs capable of using them properly. To me it was just a waste of time, to you it was time well spent. We don't necessarily need a collective discussion on how to progress, just let individuals keep doing what they're doing and things will change on their own. Invisible hand and all that jazz.

4) The 80% do offer creative input by playing and modding NESes. By playing in an NES it gives the message that that ruleset and background is acceptable and fun, while the NESes that are bad die from lack of involvement. I have never really posted in any of the threads asking for collective development, but I still craft NESes and play in them and by doing so add to the creative progress.

5) People will complain in the best of times, not to say this is the best of times. And I never said anything about July, 18 NESes have been posted in since August 2nd and 8 of those were posted in today. [5 days is hardly enough time to consider an NES inactive]

The map is usable in paint.

I have been active in the map project, which I believe is the most important thing that I could do for NESing. However, atm I do not have enough available time to consistently participate in a single NES (note that I am procrastinating doing something important right now and should not be here either, but I have been working since 9 am and I need breaks...), so I don;t really have enough time to participate in these discussions either. However, seeing as it is a problem, when I am on I shall make an effort to participate, because I know that this time thing will not last forever, and I want the community to be as vibrant as possible when I come back.

The photorealistic one? How am I supposed to change borders without making it look like crap?

No, not the photorealistic one, but that was one map. The projects that Symph led have created a perfectly usable other map far superior to the one we were using.

perhaps you are over analyizing things to much. Making a big deal out of a small one? A mountain out of a mole hill
