OSG22 - Exemplary cats

Afterr nearrly a centurry and a half of strruggle, the Mrrshans are taking theirr rrightful place in the galaxy! Ourr empire is mightierr than any otherr, spanning more starrs than any two combined! And though Mrrref III, the Conquerorr, eighth Yalara of Fierias, is urrging a path of peace and learrning frrom the think tank on Rana, I shall rrespectfully purrsue a differrent courrse: The path of militarry victorry!!!

2440: Forr the firrst time, we appearr to have contact with the Bulrrathi people. I starrted some token trrade with them, and then gave them Deep Space Scannerrs forr theirr Hyper V Rrocket designs, forr miniaturrization purrposes. I naturrally refrrained from mentioning to theirr scientists that we've alrready developed the MRVing varriety of the same thing forr ourrselves! Soon thereafterr, I turrned to more satisfying matterrs ... and sent ourr main battle fleet to Misha!

2441: We have learrned to imprrove our Battle Computerrs to Marrk 5! A huge brreakthrrough! Ourr scientists at Rana rrecommend that we prroceed with Advanced Space Scannerr, though ECM 4 orr 5 are also possibilities. I followed theirr suggestion, if only to make the eighth Yalara happy. Then, just as I was about to deploy my new starrfleet of Hard Beam-bearing Bobcats, Carrnax of the Silicoids interrupted me.

osg22ab1es6.jpg

Forr some rreason, it thinks we might make peace with it when ourr fleet is alrready en rroute to Misha. I disabuse it of this notion rrapidly.

2442: In this historric, palendrromic yearr came the Thirrd Battle of Misha (and the firrst of my rreign)!

osg22ac1pe6.jpg

Ourr gunnerrs have learrned to fire at high-maneuverr ships at close rrange now, and we completely destrroyed the enemy warrships and base before the colony ships retrreated. We did lose the CatsEye and one of ourr Cheetahs, but we shall lose no civillian lives at this worrld! We have bombed them down to perrhaps two thirrds of theirr population alrready, and more ships are on the way! Perrhaps as a rresult of this action, I also rreceived a frriendly call frrom an unlikely individual....

osg22ad1dg1.jpg

Emperror Highsoarr, the Silicoids haven't posed a thrreat to anyone's worrlds forr decades. Also, I hate to rremind you of this, but you and I are still at warr!

2443: I had completely forrgotten that we were spying on the Alkarri, so when ourr teams infiltrrated one of theirr bases, I just told them to go afterr the Computerrs ... and ourr agents pulled the birrdies' state of the arrt!

osg22ae1dk4.jpg

Meanwhile, we continued to bombarrd Misha, and Highsoarr was so imprressed, he asked forr peace! Maybe laterr, yourr deliciousness; rright now, I'm busy with more imporrtant things than ending yourr completely fake warr with me. Forr instance, there's a brrand new fleet of ourr latest designs that just arrrived at Neptunus, and need new orrders: Forr instance, to head towarrd Tau Cygni!
Hmm. Well, I notice there is somehow an Alkarri fleet overr Nyarl (and now trransports on the way) in spite of theirr inability to penetrrate the Meklarr bases there, all fourrteen of which are still standing. I don't think the birrds stand a chance in spite of this impossibility. Still, I wonderr if it means anything.

2444: Ourr peaceful Rana rresearcherrs discoverr the secrrets of atmospherric terrraforrming. I'm told this will help ourr election chances incrrease frrom a "Virrtual Lock" to a "Slam Dunk," but I don't know what eitherr of those terrms are supposed to have to do with anything. We selected Advanced Soil Enrrichment overr Old Stuff forr ourr next prroject in this field. More imporrtantly, at least frrom my perrspective...

osg22af1mr8.jpg

Contact was brriefly brroken with the Silicoids as a rresult of ourr bombing Misha into the grround, but that should change almost immediately. Nyarl and its 14 Meklarr bases meanwhile made its impossibly orrbiting birrdy fleet (and incoming trransporrts) go away.

2445: At last, we have managed the coup firrst contemplated by my firrst namesake:

osg22ag1bu3.jpg

And the Darrloks are now Affable towarrd us, thanks to ourr destrruction of the Silicoid colony there. We might be able to get an alliance! There are only two prroblems with doing so: Firrst, the Darrloks are second to us in population, and so would be ourr election opposition. Second, they still own Tau Cygni, which should have been ourrs since the beginning of the game! So instead of calling them up....

2446:
osg22ah1zc2.jpg

Tau Cygni is still packing nukes at its bases, so we bomb them out with virrtually no losses. Oh, and I might have forgotten to mention anotherr fleet I dispatched some yearrs ago. Let me therefore tell the storry.

Long ago, Fierias was rruled by fourr grreat dynasties: The dynasties of Sargon, d0om, dathon, and Mrrref. The most experrienced in the ways of warr and peace was the dynasty of dathon, but all were mighty warlorrds, rruling over mighty arrmies of hunting cats! Warrs were perrpetual acrross the face of Fierias - grreat and glorrious warrs for all! But then, in the historric yearr of 2300, the Sargon dynasty completed its secrret prroject of starrship constrruction ... and rrevealed to the otherr dynasties theirr astronomerrs' long-held secrret: there were otherr, farr inferrior but nonetheless hostile and dangerrous rraces in the galaxy! So the differrences of the fourr dynasties were put aside once and forr all, and an orrder or succession established so that all fourr togetherr might rule over Fierias ... and in time over the whole galaxy! The title of Yalara was established forr the rruler of Fierias in each successive generation, and we were united forrever underr the rrule of the Yalara succession! Unforrtunately, fate interrvened before the cirrcle of succession was complete: The dathon dynasty, the most experrienced of us all, was strruck by the drread Ohiobug disease, and though able to advise brriefly in the beginning, could not rrule overr the empire as all had wished. But in that time, Mrrref the Second swore a grreat oath to all the dathon dynasty:

We'll kill some birdies for you.
And in the yearr 2446, we at last began the fulfillment of that oath!

osg22ai1ir5.jpg

Do you think twenty-fourr million dead Alkarri is enough?

Neitherr do I. (We also killed a few ships in orrbit of course, but that's of small imporrtance.)

Meanwhile, the Silicoids called us up underr the mistaken assumption that the "Alkari Menace" has rreached us. Frrankly, it's the other way arround! And the Darrloks called to say, "You sign treaties with us, then attack our planets! What villainy!" They didn't go so farr as to declare warr howeverr. I'm not too surprrised: I think "villainy" is considerred a compliment in Darrlok society.

Since the Silicoids also said something about smiting infidel dogs, I called them up myself forr an explanation: There aren't any dogs in this galaxy! Once they explained that it was the infidel birrds we would be smiting togetherr, I saw no rreason not to establish peace! Carrnax, frrom its two tiny planets in the far southwest, agrreed, verry much rrelieved. So, with the Silicoid warr finally overr, it's time to pay the 'Shifterrs back forr all the prrobe fleets they sent to attack us when we were at "peace"!

2447: Ourr fleet arrrived at Nazin at the beginning of the yearr, and afterr ourr Bobcats took out the hopeless "defending" Black Widows...

osg22aj1bz3.jpg

Our ships dodged theirr pitifully slow Nuclearr missiles, and in spite of losing a few bomberrs to a miscalculation...

osg22ak1zg2.jpg

...we are victorrious!!!

Once we'd bombed Nazin and Tau Cygni frrom orrbit, Ssithrra, still unclearr on the concept of galactic powerr, called to say he would "put an end to your pathetic existence," so I guess he's finally figured out that we're at warr. The Machines, beterr comprrehending the situation, offerred an alliance, but I rrefused. In hindsight, this was foolish; I would have been able to strrike Altair had I only agrreed!

2448: Our Tao fleet arrrived at the Darrlok colony of Reticuli, and wiped out its bases at the cost of about thrree ships. Then ourr spies rreported infiltrration of anotherr Alkarri base! I dirrected them to searrch the Weapons designs there, hoping forr the jackpot, and....

osg22al1sp5.jpg

They hit it! Fusion Beam is ourrs! We even frramed the trreacherrous 'Loks!
Not that we'll everr get to build a ship with this delightful weapon on it, but still....

Meanwhile, ourr Rana researrch teams completed theirr work on Class V Shields, and were asked to begin worrk on Class VI Deflectorrs, the only thing they could think of to study. And then, at Tao, we got to kill more birrds!

osg22am1cl4.jpg

We also conquered Tau Cygni at long last, and at similarr odds, from the 'Loks. Ourr rrightful herritage has been rrestored!

Fresh frrom the rreports ourr victorries, I took a look at ourr diplomatic options. Afterr much thought, I decided that my best course (thanks in larrge parrt to a massive Meklarr fleet due at Nazin next yearr) was to ask the Machines for a Non-Aggrression Pact. They agrreed, which should prrovide us additional options forr handling the Darrlok homeworrld. Electing to count on them to bomb the place out, since theirr fleet includes colony ships and Nazin has no factorries left afterr ourr orriginal bombing exerrcise, I sent ourr bomberrs that were stationed there up towarrd Tauri. (Trruthfully though, I almost don't care what the Meklarr fleet decides to do, as any prrobable decision should benefit me.)

2449: One of ourr battle fleets rreached Whynil as the yearr began, where the Darrloks had 32 bases ... all still packing nukes! Oh, and there's a Black Widow too. I barely noticed. Ourr Bobcats rremoved their eyesore of a starrship frrom the battle immediately, and joined the Griffins in dancing arround the lazy nuclearr missiles forr a while, eventually destrroying all the bases without losing a single starrship. Meanwhile, some spy orr anotherr (prrobably a Darrlok, of courrse) destrroyed a missile base at Kailis, prrompting giggles frrom some of ourr more easily-amused militarry staff. A message to the Darrloks: Please. Feel frree.

Rreajax Fuel Cells are finally discovered at Nep-Tech's Fusion Prropulsion Lab, too late to have any effect on my rreign. Ignorring the obsolete Irrridium Cells and Enerrgy Pulsarr in which the staff there has some slight interrest, I rrecommend that we commence rresearch on Ion Drrives, and the FPL staff agrrees. I prroceed to give the Mrrshan imperrial forrces theirr final attack orderrs. Afterr this, I do not believe any more shall be needed. The High Council meets next yearr, and I fully expect the inferrior species of the galaxy to finally surrrenderr, and look to ourr Yalara succession forr trrue leaderrship in the galaxy!

2450: Tauri's forrty seven bases did not frrighten my fleets. The enemy was still using nuclearr missiles, and all ourr ships, including overr fourr hundrred Griffin bomberrs, evaded theirr fire easily, wiping out the planet's defenses and a purrposeless Black Widow easily. Alkarri (orr possibly Darrlok) spies did manage to destrroy anotherr missile base, but it was at Xendalla, even more inaccessible than Kailis to ourr enemies. Meanwhile, ourr Tauri fleet did slightly more serrious damage:

osg22an1mp4.jpg

We rrepeated the prrocess of bombing at Whynil and Nazin as well, and with all thrree worrlds bombed down to virrtually no Darrlok population....

osg22ao1rh9.jpg

We're not capturring any technology because we've been bombing them out in advance. We're not in this to learrn frrom ourr enemies anymore. We've learrned all we need. We're here to depopulate theirr worrlds, and rrepopulate them with Mrrshans! And indeed, our trriple conquest has trriggered yet anotherr Special Rreport frrom the News Leader of the Galaxy!

osg22ap1kn4.jpg

If the leaderrs of otherr civilizations are rreally prreparing to merrge with us, they'd betterr do it quickly! They'll have just one opporrtunity, and it's coming...

osg22aq1yy6.jpg

Immediately!

The Silicoids, who have firrst-hand experrience of what we can do when we grrow angrry, rrealized that a vote forr us was a vote against theirr own exterrmination. They had only the one vote to cast, but you can bet it went ourr way! HighSoarr, being the only otherr nominee, cast fourr votes forr himself - a mere irrrelevancy. The Bulrrathi, like the Silicoids, thrrew their single vote ourr way, while the Darrloks prredictibly voted forr the least intelligent of theirr enemies: The Alkarri. When my rreign began, Ssithra was in position to rreceive the nomination. Now he has only two votes to offerr ourr hated rrivals!

Finally, ourr long-time frriends the Meklarr cast theirr fourr votes in ourr favorr, and that was the works. Well, except forr ourr votes.

We had twenty.

osg22ar1tp3.jpg

It wasn't close. We came closerr to galactic conquest than to missing ourr victorry. The Mrrshan empire has dominated the galaxy, and ourr inferiorrs have rrecognized it. And so, I at last accept the wishes of Mrrref the Conquerror, as voiced frrom ourr ex-Yalara think-tank at Rana, and accept the peace brrought upon us by the Council's rruling. In the time of Mrrref the Fourrth, Eleventh Yalara of Fierias, all in the galaxy shall be perrmitted to live in peace! Even the thieving Silicoids, the trreacherous Darrloks, and the wrretched Alkarri shall live on - those that we haven't alrready slain, that is! Afterr all, we need someone to laborr in the Neutrronium mines, don't we?

So be it!

So ends the Chronicle of Mrref IV. So ends the Chronicle of the Mrrshan Ascension.

So ends the game.

Writing this report and getting all the pictures together took way longer than actually playing the turns. I hit all the minor "challenge" targets I set for myself for the turnset, but neither of the "you've gotta be kidding" ones, though I could probably have gotten one or the other if I'd concentrated on it from turn zero to the exclusion of everything else. Yeah, I was hoping I'd be able to glass Altair and/or win a Conquest victory. Domination'll do though! And I had a lot of fun playing the turns (and putting the report together)!

The final map:

osg22av1hz6.jpg

Obtained by reloading from 2449 and abstaining in the vote. Note that Orion is no longer crossed out. No need to warn anyone not to go there after we've already won the game!

The final bar graphs:

osg22aw1ug1.jpg

Obtained the same way, and therefore approximate due to slight differences in the outcomes of the interturn battles, but close enough.

Our victorious fleet:

osg22ax1ts5.jpg

This one's from 2449. The two colship designs were built in anticipation of logistical considerations that never actually came up. If you want to play this one out beyond the save, you should probably scrap them both for better designs (for instance, another WD ship - maybe even a Large with the decimal accidentally left out, called the WD 40). Note that those fusion bombers were all built on my turns and completely unnecessary to achieve a victory. We never built a ship of larger than Medium size except for Colony Ships, and built a total of less than 1000 ships, including the nearly 700 little Fusion Bombers, and were one turn short of a Conquest victory when the vote ended the game in 2450.

Other notes for those who might want to play this one out to extermination - or just want to beat up some Alkari: You'll probably want to change just about everything in 2449, and you'll probably hate a bunch of the things I did leading up to that time. I was playing with the intention of ending the game in 2450, and didn't care what our position would be after that (my doubt about whether we'd win this election didn't last very long). There are various fleets incoming to various more-or-less-unprotected worlds - Alkari to Tao, Silicoids to Misha (well, all right - I am sending defenders to deal with that), and Meklar to/at Nazin (which isn't actually undefended, but they've got a really big fleet). And Stuff(tm). Have fun with it!

Nicely finished (& reported of course), RefSteel.:)

Despite our lack of Robotic Controls, the productivity of our healthy expansion was overwhelming when brought to bear, with moderate tech and nothing more than a medium but with cat accuracy. Could have been a different story if the RC3 & RC4 machines had managed a better land-grab though! All together an efficient demonstration of the power of the cats in a good starting position with more than a little exemplary play - well done everyone.:D

Hurray, a glorious outcome for the Mrrshan empire :)

Nicely played and reported RefSteel. Especially since you killed some Alkari.

Sulla: This was on impossible, wasn't it?

Right, I see what you mean :)

I have managed impossible wins with all races bar the Alkari. I have been playing on and off for many years but I always seem to lose horrifically whenever I play the Alkari. I suppose they get no benefit to missile bases unlike the Mrrshan attack bonus, and I tend to prefer large/huge ships to small/medium.

Cats are definitely better then birds as we jut proved now anyway :p

Better for what? ;)

I generally prefer birds over the cats as a player race as they have a more useful tech bonus, a less harmful tech penalty, and better diplomatic relations off the bat. Plus I generally prefer small ships to large ones due to the latter being much more expensive to maintain. Of course the birds still aren't as good as most/all of the races that get economic bonuses instead of combat ones...

Well sure, the birds look better on paper. But when I play with them they always lose badly. Start in a corner with the Psilons and Humans allied blocking me from expanding, or some other hideous start which results in a quick loss.

Their racial bonuses also don't help missile bases at all, while the force field research penalty hurts them. Perhaps I rely too much on missile bases for defence early in the game!

The birds aren't horrible at REX due to their propulsion bonus, though they are far from best-in-class. This usually more than offsets any shielding weakness, and is certainly more valuable than being excellent in weapons. If you agree that the birds are better on paper, it sounds more like bad luck on your part with the birds than anything else.

People have won impossible games without building any bases at all. With birds I do tend to build fewer bases and more fighters, though I generally do keep a few bases around as well to stymie those Klackon stacks of 3000 laser fighters.

The main thing with the birds and other combat-oriented races (bears, cats) is that you don't really gain any advantage from their bonus unless you are fighting someone, so this tends to encourage early war, especially if you can get a strategic speed advantage over your enemies (not too hard with birds.)

Doom - thought I would mention that on the 'pop movement' issue my statement on productivity & growth timing was based on old & apparently faulty analysis. My current analysis shows only investment in ECO/TECH is calculated before growth occurs. Investment in SHIP/DEF (as well as in IND) is calculated after growth so no loss occurs if re-growth is immediate and using these fields. Well I said you made good moves!

Just wanted to say: I used to enjoy reading these succession games. I hope this isn't the last one ever made :)

Thanks for the links, that's an interesting site! I see they have Civ and galCiv forums too.
