IMO, this is not the way to go. RD threads were tried before and I did not think they were particularly effective. What needs to be done is to split OT on content, not requested moderation status. I'm also fine with just merging it back to the way things were.

I suppose this is what will actually happen in the end.

I don't care, as long as the currently dead art forum goes (is united) along with the rest :jesus:

Splitting OT on content rather than moderation was my first thought as well, except the content sections in the Colosseum are all mostly dead. You can see by amount of people browsing at any one time and when sorted by last post.

There are folks who want to re-unite the OT cause they're saying it was better before the Tavern/Chamber split, and then you've got :old: who say it was better before with even less sections. The mods are saying there needs be some area that they can moderate so it can't be all Tavern rules; must have either a Chamber or Red Diamonds. When I stop and think about advantage/disadvantage between a 'moderation by forum' Chamber system and a 'moderation by thread' RD system it's not even close.

If it comes down to which subforum a thread is located in and what is the best layout for those subforums, a simple solution could be to have only:
  • Tavern
    • Chamber
    • Basement
..and fold everything from WH, A&E, Sports, etc into one of those three sections. So you'd start in the middle in Tavern and have easy access to the other two. For all the threads in the forums that got closed you could set a date where everything goes into the Tavern unless the original poster requests one of the other two.

Chamber standards could be less about "mature" discussion and more about effort. Things like having content in the original post, replies that stick to the topic of the thread and strict adherence to the Civility rules. Basement could be the opposite and the place to put things like serial picture threads, maybe with no postcount. Tavern becomes somewhere in the middle of that. I dunno maybe some sections have enough activity that they're worth saving so they could become a subforum of whichever rules standard they belong under.

A tutorial for the OT section that tells how to set your subscriptions with My Account, effective searching for threads and the use of Tags might be useful for this system. Maybe there is a way edit tags into preexisting threads too.

If you don't want to get rid of it, just hide DanQ's Personal OT Forum somewhere else, like under News Updates. : P

I don't recall if I've posted already, but will all the threads from both be preserved?

I'd hope all the threads from all three will be preserved.

Have any conclusions been reached about what should be done? Has the poll had any effect on what the mods plan to do?

The question was "should this be done" and the answer seems to be "yes." So it will be done. I can't comment on time, as that is above my volunteer-pay-grade.

That's EXACTLY what I've been arguing, and virtually nobody seems to agree!

Yeah honestly I wanted to be polite and stay out of it but I can tell you right now splitting it on content is the worst of all worlds.

Why? Virtually every forum that split the politics and religion OT from the main OT has succeeded.

You can post all the politics and religion you want in the Chamber or Red Diamond it after the split. Based on the Chamber and Red Diamond experiments thus far, there is a very small market for such higher-moderated discussions.

It's funny you say that because back in the day CFC's OT was about the only place you could get a good discussion. We credited that in part with there not being a split. Back then, CFC was the only website with this magic amount of moderation, the right crowd of a real mix of backgrounds, and the right divisions. World history had its own section because otherwise history posts would be crowded out (it's a civ forum after all), and humor and jokes and forum games so that it wasn't spammy in the main, but the rest was anything goes.

We talked about splitting off politics and religion because any other splits like S&T and A&E were ever split and we were always glad not to do it.

"Back in the day." It's 2013 now, and highly doubt the OT can even be managed effectively as one forum.

Come off it. OT is not bigger--it's gotten smaller. And with split off subforums, it's even smaller still.

Alternative reply: are you saying, the moderator team isn't as effective as it was? Or are you saying the same moderators who would manage two subforums would have less work because with a split, there's less work to do because a split will reduce traffic?

It could be said that *most* of the political threads currently are either not containing very 'serious' debate OR are in the chamber and appear to be more theoretical and not often about current affairs.

If it is decided that the OT will be an over-forum with many smaller forums under its wing (ala 'Other Games') then maybe this sort of branching could work:

OT (everything not belonging to any sub-category)

Subcategories:

-Politics

-Art

-Religion

-Science

-History

-Sports

-Humor

-Technology

Although this too can lead to 'issues', i suppose, at least for those who care a lot about the actual form of the OT forum..

RD won't work in my view (re-stated).

Given the situation in the US and Middle East, it's pretty much impossible to separate politics and religion.

That's the best idea I've heard in this thread!
