PAX Conference analysis thread

I will say this, if the Pueblo are in after that video I will be 1) surprised, 2) happy, 3) ticked that the developers went out of their way to make it sound like they weren't in anymore.

The Tourism screen looks kinda nice to me, easy to read, though it could be a bit of a hassle in a larger game to have to go through all the different civs to see what their culture progress is.

Worth thinking about, the new culture victory requires you to go wide instead of tall, seeing as how you need tourism, and you get tourism based on great works and the like (probably some archeology as well), but you can only have so many great works at a time, the number will be increased by buildings like a Museum, so you will need a lot of cities with Museums to generate the needed tourism to win the game.

Which leads to the question: Is it even possible to do? +2 tourism per great work and you have to generate more tourism than culture of any civ in the game?

Which will lead me to another speculation point: Notice how when he hovered over the great works in Warsaw they read when they had been created (Renaissance Era) which could indicate that the value will increase the longer you have had them, so when he entered Industrial Era maybe all great works from previous will suddenly generate 4 instead of 2.

Also anyone notice the new button in between, ehm.. think it was the diplomacy and social policies, it kinda looked like it was for Ideologies, which would mean they are not a part of the Social Policy system anymore. Yet they said they had expanded the SP system, which if they have taken 3 out will need to have put more in than just the previously discussed 2 (Exploration and Aesthetics). Maybe there will be more in each tree? Or maybe the Order/Freedom/Autocracy trees are still in there but require the correct Ideology to open up?

While it is unfortunate that either Pope or even the Pueblo civ itself won't be in, I am glad that the devs are trying to be respectful to the group in question, which is something that sometimes doesn't always happen for other video games that portray various groups in a humiliating way. Of course, that's not to say that the Pueblo civ was intended to humiliate the Pueblo people obviously, but it's good the devs had this under consideration - frankly, given how little people know about the native americans in the US and how they're still stereotyped, this is maybe much, much more than I expected.

And while I am disappointed that it looks like they won't be in... I have to give Firaxis its props on this like you said. A lot of other companies simply wouldn't have cared or put this attention to detail

I will say, even though the XCOM unit seemed like 100% like a panel-specific joke to me, I'd love for it to actually be in the game. Seems fun, and late-game could always use spicing up.

The trading routes system seems really nice! I was afraid that it would be a bit too manual/micro, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Dennis did say that they were not in the game, but were supposed to be.

The Pueblo council did not want themselves/their leader in the game (from Dennis's explanation).

Anyone noticed the Diplomacy Overview button? It changed a LOT. It used to be a globe, not it is 3 things, including a song note.

EDIT: Nevermind...

If Sofia is a city-state no Bulgaria civ then:(

The Diplo button is still there, isn't it?

I wouldn't say the Pueblo are off the beatenpath. In fact I'd say they are one of the most recognizable to the world from the US. Nevertheless, it sounded like the council could not get past the idea of Pope as a leader. The 17th century Pueblo leaders still hold extreme religious significance. There are other leaders though from the 19th-20th century that don't hold that religious significance that would be perfectly fine (but no where as cool as Pope...)

They were the first tribe I ever learned about in school. I was upset that they won't be in. However, the common tribes seem to be Sioux, Apache, Cherokee, Comanche things like that that people talk about. I suppose because of Westerns and so forth. I do agree with you though about the Pueblo. Firaxis made a good choice trying to add them.

I will have to get a link to an article about this... I have a couple of friends who are archaeologists who have excavated several Anasazi/Pueblo/Hohokam great houses and villages. Will be an interesting read for them...

Agreed! Even though I would've loved for the Pueblo people to be properly represented in the game, I have to give props to Firaxis for respecing thier wishes!

This is my first post but I felt it important-
Is there a link for rewatching as I missed the live stream?

I believe they said it was recorded and was going to be put up after a while. Check back at the same link, under the Videos tab at the bottom, to see if the eventually do so. I'm sure someone will post here when they do, as well.

I wonder what the Brazil UU and UA is?

Regarding the X-COM unit:

First, I think it was just a joke.

But nonetheless, I don't see the problem of having a few futuristic units in the game. It's not like time stops at the present. And it's not like Civilization is historically accurate or historically immersive anyway, that was never the point of this series - there are other games out there focused on historical precision, Civ5 is a lot more game-y and a selected few sci-fi futuristic units would feel right at home in it, for me. And at the end of it all, it's not like many games even reach the Future Era - I've never seem a GDR, for one.
