+ This music is haunting. It starts slowly and takes its time to become one of the most grandiose tunes of all civs.

- The celts have a theme that sounds so generic and so... un-celt. I wasn't expecting anything resembling a New Age pastiche like the modern era Celts of Civ 4, but the new, relaxing tune of Civ 5 is easily overshadowed by most of the other European tracks. It's just bland.

+ I know there's a leitmotiv that appears all the time, but the music itself is very changing. It starts very peacefully, then goes to a crescendo and ends up almost like a lullaby. Also, it sounds very african, unlike Shaka's, which is too westernized to my taste.

- I'm currently playing as Siam, and I try to reload as little as possible so I won't have to suffer its music. It's quite the opposite of Askia's tune: Rammy's sounds like a bland Hollywood score to some romance located in South Asia.

Celts' theme is just bland especially considering the look of the leader. Also doesn't seem that celtic to me.

Songhai's is the best theme in the game. Great meld of orchestral and african sounds. Blows my mind that anyone voted it down.

That's because the source melody Michael Curran (the composer) based the Songhai theme on was repetitive, it was a Gambian man playing a simple repeating melody on a guitar like instrument on youtube.

I am happy that you like the Boudicca Theme music. It is one of my favorites. "The Lass of Aughrim" has been a favorite of mine for many years every since I first heard it in John Huston's film "The Dead" from the short story by James Joyce in his 1914 collection "Dubliners". "The Lass of Aughrim" is most commonly known as an Irish tune, but as I began to research it, I discovered that it had Scottish roots. Many early folk songs of England, Scotland, Wales, and America had a rather intertwined history and evolution. The fact that it had Scottish roots and was related to the tune "Lord Gregory", I thought that I had enough of a connection there to use it as the Boudicca Theme.

I do read the Civ forums regularly and am aware of the comments or type of comments you mention. As to a complaint that it is not "Celtic" enough or that it should have been more like Civ4's Celtic Theme, I would say that the design of Civilization V was very different than that of Civilization IV in regard to the design of the soundtrack and the varied use of the Leader Music in the game. Early in the project, we met with the design leads and determined that we wanted "Cinematic Orchestral" as a style. As for how the "non-western" or "non-classical" music was to be treated, we tried to evoke ethnicity much the way a movie composer would by including ethnic themes and ethnic instruments into the "cinematic orchestral" style of composing. The Civ IV Celtic theme by contrast was written to sound like more traditional ethnic music of the region - or more specifically, what most people would expect that to sound like. While beautifully composed and rendered by Mark Cromer, the style choice was a product of the musical design of Civ4. + A brief but majestic piece. It starts very slowly, but luckily has more personality than its babylonian counterpart. After a few seconds, it becomes a somewhat menacing peace theme, like a big parade marching through the desert!

- It's very obvious that Hiawatha's track isn't composed by the same people that made eveything else. It's incredibly dull, plain and a little stereotyped. To me, it's the worst amerindian theme.

PS: I was ninja'ed by Guandao. So I had to correct the points and Hiawatha got eliminated.

I think his justification for it is quite tenuous. Being from Ireland and Scotland does not necessarily make it Celtic. When it comes to Celtic culture the connection is that it was sung sometimes (in English) in the Irish speaking area of Conamara but its origins is probably lowland Scots. There's a legitimacy to the claim that it's not really 'Celtic'.
