PH06: One is the Loneliest Number!

well, i actually did play late the night of the 23rd but wasn't able to post my report until the 24th. Unfortunately, i then discovered that our cable/internet/phone was out when i we got home from our xmas celebrations. So, i've been without all 3 since xmas eve. I was going to email the report to myself, but realized the stupidity of this last night :crazyeye: so, i HAVE played, but with the holiday, ETA on their arrival to find out what is wrong is tomorrow with the Cable lines is tomorrow!!

Please skip me until further notice. Hopefully they'll come out, spend an hour and fix simple a connection problem, which is usually what it is with the rain like we've been having.

so, again, sorry, please skip me, and try to do better than i did ;)

okay, then, we'll all hurry up and wait ~ i'll play an extra 10 turns, if nobody minds, that is, just to simulate more progress in the gam ;)

well, finally, after waiting all day yesterday, comcast came out this morning and fixed our internet. I had my wife email me the save, but she couldn't find my report to email ~ women!

in either case, i played 20 turns. At the outset, i was hoping to take up Frankcor's suggestion and move into Cathaginian territory to take the fight to them, and was moving units northwest for that when i spied several large carthaginian and spanish stacks moving towards Lahore and Pyong.

Panicking, i revolted to Nationhood (for 2 turns!) and started drafting 4 units each turn to send to the front. However, given the relative unintelligence of the AI, I was able to counterattack at Lahore, obliterating one stack there, while the other moved south to go after sparta.

I moved some units south from Lahore to help out, while the new drafted recruits also went there to help. Lucky again, i was able to completely annihilate that stack there.

Meanwhile, back at Pyong, I had been whittling down the stack a little at a time while the few siege engines worked on the defenses. I *think* i would've been able to clear the city of units given time, BUT, victoria had other plans.

at the end of my first set, Victoria declared! And i stopped then, happy the next sod would have to deal with that crap. However, I ended up being the next sod, so . . .

I made peace with Hannibal and ejected those forces from our lands while i sent units north towards lahore and corinth. At the end of the first turn of war, there were no english units.

On the next turn, I sizable stack showed filled with artillery adn SAMs just outside of Lahore. Well, since i had been cleaning out the city to take out that stack by Pyong, we only had 2 inf and a canon there. I pulled those units out of the city, knowing we'd lose it, and sent them south to Sparta. Needless to say, the city fell the enxt turn w/no defenders in it.

However, Vicky just stayed in the city for a bit, perhaps waiting until it was out of revolt. I kept on drafting and producing units and sending them north. their warships were decimating our coasts and now were bombarding cities' defenses. And THEN, Vicky had tanks coming for Corinth! only 2 to be exact but, still . . .

Well, i suffered a few losses at their hands, but was able to take them out (3 in total as another one came down). When i ended my set, Corinth was cleared of enemies, but vicky had a smaller stack detached from Lahore moving on sparta. We've got a sizable stack in Sparta; it can definitely hold. We've also got a growing force in corinth. our oil should be online soon, for whatever that's worth.

fox, i've emailed you the save since i can't post files here from work. thank you all for your patience.

don't worry folks, we'll get there with this one :goodjob:

fox, you've got mail!

but it's not the save...yet.

Tanks???? We will need a lot of combat cannons for that. We seem to be going back and forth between Izzy team to Vicky and really getting nowhere. It's time to drop a nuke on somebody and do some serious razing. Why bother wasting troops on garrison just raze the suckers now. Lots of infantry/cannons should be able to deal with Vicky. We should also look for her oil source and disconnect it. I think once we get somewhere with Vicky Izzy will declare again. We need to have two armies one to deal with her and one to deal Vicky. Some progress needs to be made otherwise we will never get off this merry go round.

Hmmm ... there are some less than optimum tile workings in some cities, and what is Ms Channel doing sleeping? Go spread your perfume! Go sell your Little Black Dress!

lonely-AD1825-idle-merchant.jpg

And I see there is a small English stack incursions into our lands ... and since when is Lahore English???? I must correct all these!

With tons of units sitting nearby, I can't let that English incursion survive pass the time I press enter, so I attacked:

I was never afraid to take heavy losses, but losing at 74% is too much :aargh:

I got us Physics, heading towards Artilleries.

lonely-AD1828-physics.jpg

And Ms Gabrielle Coco Chanel reached Egypt, her Chanel No. 5 was a huge success among the Egyptian ladies, and got us 2250 gold.

lonely-AD1830-money.jpg

I immediately set research to 100% and wasted nearly all her profit to get us Artillery:

lonely-AD1837-artillery.jpg

Meanwhile there were a few infantries and tank incursions by Vicky, apparently Vicky is trying to steal the secret of Chanel's Suit, but these thieving Englishman were all repelled.

lonely-AD1831-tank.jpg

Her biggest effort came from this landing:

lonely-AD1834-landings.jpg

But I managed to pull forces from nearby cities and decimated these british robbers before they can do any damages:

While attacking in Roman territory at Estruscan, Infantry loses to: English Tank (15.40/28) (Prob Victory: 3.8%)
While attacking in Roman territory at Estruscan, Infantry defeats (8.00/20): English Infantry (Prob Victory: 32.2%)

While attacking in Roman territory at Estruscan, Cavalry defeats (15.00/15): English Infantry (Prob Victory: 100.0%)

Finally, I moved our stack to Dacca ... ha! two miserable defenders??? You are asking for it, Asoka!!!

While attacking in Indian territory at Dacca, Cavalry defeats (6.90/15): Indian SAM Infantry (Prob Victory: 71.9%)
While attacking in Indian territory at Dacca, Infantry defeats (16.20/20): Indian Machine Gun (Prob Victory: 91.0%)
Hinduism has spread: Dacca
Captured Dacca (Asoka)
Dacca begins: Theatre (75 turns)

lonely-AD1837-attk-decca.jpg

I continued to push our stack forward, going to reach the next indian city next turn. Be careful there though, I saw an Indian tank there a couple of turns ago.

lonely-AD1840-forces.jpg

On a not so cheerful note, I don't think we can win this game, variant or not. Cathy has launched 2 to 3 casings ... I think hatty is close to completing the Apollo as well. However, I will be satisfied enough just to eliminate one partner each in Vicky-Asoka and Izzy-Brennus couples. Cathy can go flirt in space, I couldn't care less.

>>> The Save (1840AD) <<<

I see that I am up but of course tonight's bad so can't get to it until tomorrow night. (New Year's day in the evening)

His loneliness is spinning his wheels pretty good. We need to put an end to Asoka since we should try to make our variant to some degree. Only problem is though we are facing tanks with infantry/artillery. That’s needs to be changed so I up the science even though it costs to speed up electricity. Once we get industrialism we should be able to put a dent in Vicky/Asoka. Nice thing too is that Catherine don’t like them much.

Some guy puts out a report and shows we are puny on the wealth department.

Civ4ScreenShot0267.jpg

A couple things need doing too that I notice. We need a road to get our troops faster to the front. Cumae has a lot of tiles that aren’t equipped with railroad which would help it’s production immensely.

Here’s a pleasant bit of news however we really don’t need Catherine getting any stronger. (she’s double our score)

Civ4ScreenShot0268.jpg

That ought to keep Vicky/Asoka occupied for a while until they make peace which is always way too soon for my liking with AI.

We have been diligently trying to get a GP but it’s not in the cards for us right now we get a GA instead. I don’t know what to do with him. We could use him for lightbulbing a part of communism.

I do send him north for a possible culture bomb but we can change our mind since he’s enroute.

Civ4ScreenShot0269.jpg

The same year Asoka lands this on our shores. Good less to deal with on his lands.

Civ4ScreenShot0270.jpg

After some losses we do take this bunch out without loosing a city.

We do get a bit of sweet revenge and take Bombay however the picture didn’t take.

A few years later turn 7 of my set we discover electricity and now on the path to industrialism and tanks/battleships. (my fav)

Civ4ScreenShot0271.jpg

We also manage to take Bengal with few losses. If we go for Delhi make sure you have enough reinforcements to garrison otherwise it will be a wasted effort. Maybe raze the sucker and really kick him in the cahoneys.

Civ4ScreenShot0272.jpg

That’s the end of my escapades. Just a few things. Farms need to be built, and Cumae needs railroads!!!!!! Finish the road to Dacca or whatever so that the troops will move to the front line much faster. That two tiles slows them down too much and speed is of the essence of course. I started on some destroyers and once we industrialism I would think about the odd battleship. Our empire is large enough to take out Asoka/Vicky. We need to get some coal plants built, to improve production in some cities.

The Save

Why are we going for tanks? I thought Gunship is the counter to armored units?

Good news indeed Cathy declaring on Asoka!

Bad news for artists, I think he should be used to culture bomb on a newly captured city somewhere.

Good job surviving the stack. The AI seems intent on landing on one single spot!

Yeah, true abt the need for roads. But I went crazy with workers in my last turn, so it should help. ;)

A nice turnset!

Frank is UP, Pholky on Deck.

As I was reading this, the same thought occured to me. I hardly ever build tanks for the same reason I neve build Riflemen. Despite a lower attack rating, Gunships and Grenadiers enjoy massive bonuses. Unless you are Fredrick, your better off with gunships.

I don't know but I think gunships blow. The AI is running around with 10-15%tanks and the rest infantry so tell me what fairs better against infantry. Also why we were researching electricity when we should have gone for rocketry. Don't forget guys you need flight too for gunships.

Personally I think gunships are a BIG mistake and we will do much better on the attack with tanks. Don't forget we have a lot of sea resources and need to defend them with battleships. Artillery/tanks can do a lot more damage imo than gunships. They simply only work against tanks and with the odd tank here and there what's the point?

I agree with you, Cosmichail about the importance of battleships and tanks. You're also right that we'll need flight too and that's going to take even longer. You've convinced me to stick to the Industrialism track. Besides, Marines provide a great anti-artillery role for stacks moving in enemy territory.

I've got the save and I'm playing now.

Inherited turn (1850 AD):

Turn 1 (1851 AD): Lahore constructed a Theatre, started a Library(8). Workers continued building a road to the front.

Turn 2 (1852 AD): Rome constructed an Aqueduct and is no longer starving due to ill health. The citizens began work on a Destroyer(7). Neapolis construted a Coal Plant, started a Destroyer(8). I was determined to control our southern coast so we could fish the seas again. Bombay came out of revolt and is starving badly. But no whipping was available.

The bombardment of Delhi began.

IBT: Isabella captured two Incan cities. That sort of surprised me -- I didn't realize Hatty/Huayuna were at war with Izzy/Hannibal. At the same time, I saw that Catherine was no longer along side us at war against Vicky/Asoka. There had been a very little activity by our enemies so far. I surmised I could expect that to end at any time soon.

Turn 3 (1853 AD): Cumae trained an Artillery, started an Infantry(3). Corinth constructed a Theatre, started a Destroyer(60) -- what a dirth of hammers there.

The railroad to Dacca was completed. Cumae to Dacca could now be done in less than 2 turns. I planned to attempt to complete the railroad to Bombay -- it would require construction adjacent to the Indian cultural border but I could garrison the tile with three Infantry and a Machine GUn while the construction took place.

IBT: Hatty asked us for assistance in her struggle with Spain. I refused. She remained pleased with us but not pleased enough to grant us a free tech or trade aluminum for fur with us. And I wasn't willing to sleep with her again to see if that might make her pleased enough.

An English Cavalry suicided attacking a Machine Gun in Dacca. Meanwhile, an English tank pulled up next to Bombay, likely with plans to pillage our rice paddy there.

Turn 4 (1854 AD): We popped a gold discovery at Neapolis -- 7 :commerce: added to our coffers each turn. New Athens trained an Infantry, started an Artillery(5).

Johannes Vermeer, our Great Artist Arrived at Bombay.
one48.jpg

He'll likely do very little to help there. He'll be too late to do Bengal any good. I decided to save him for Delhi where he might do us a lot more good helping that city come out of revolt quick and might be able to pick up a few culture tiles to work.

The Bombardment of Delhi was complete. Here was the situation:
one49.jpg

That much Navy hadn't been sunk in a harbor since the Japanese snuck attacked the U.S. All we had to do was kill 5 foot-units and a tank -- piece of cake. Well, tell that to the 3 Cannon and 1 Artillery who died in the ensuing assault. But we took the city:
one50.jpg

Looking at that cultural border, I knew the right place for our Artist would be here.

IBT: Asoka retook Delhi, killing 4 of our Infantry and 1 Artillery (one I had upgraded from a Cannon just the last turn :( He lost 2 artillery in the process.

Catherine asked us for a trade of horses for a Hit Single. I accepted the trade. She can't possibly need horses now, can she?

Turn 5 (1855 AD): Bombay constructed a Theatre, started a Lighthouse(4).

Charlemagne earned his Level 8 promotion in the assault on Delhi. I was wise to return him to Bengal and not add him to the ill fated garrison at Delhi. I didn't want to give him any strength promotions to avoid him defending in an attack, so I have him Medic 1 to replace the medic who died IBT.

We didn't have enough of a force left to retake Delhi this turn. I retreated our troops back to Bengal to heal and regroup. Meanwhile, Vicky has sent in 3 tanks to pillage around

Turn 6 (1856 AD): Cumae trained an Infantry, started another(3). Sparta constructed a Coal Plant, started an Infantry(7). Chittachong completed (something), started an Infantry(7). Dacca constructed a Lighthouse, started a Library(11). Antium constructed a Forum, started a Barracks(13). Kolhapur trained an Artillery, started an Infantry(14).

IBT: The English made another landing at Etruscan on the identical tile she's landed on the previous 4 invasions. Unfortunately, she landed right on top of one of our Workers.

Catherine completed the 3 Gorges Damn. That girl's got power now.

Turn 7 (1857 AD): I drafted Infantry in Estrucan and its 3 neighboring towns to deal with the British incursion there.

I sacrificed a medic artillery at Etruscan to work over her stack of 3 Tanks, 3 Infantry and 3 Artillery. She doesn't have enough force to take the city but we don't have enough to take out her stack. So I turtled up.

IBT: We took a beating from Vicky at Etruscan and another at Dacca. Her tanks are eating our Infantry for lunch.

Turn 8 (1858 AD): Cumae trained a Machine Gun, started an Infantry(3). P'yongyang trained a Destroyer, started another(12). Pisae trained a Destroyer, started another(9).

At Dacca, with the help of a fresh replacement Artillery, the stack of 4 invaders was eliminated. I drafted more infantry, this time from cities further away from Etruscan, and sent them to the besieged coastal city. The wounded tanks had split up to plunder, taking infantry escorts with them. This AI is getting too smart. Meanwhile, her artillery continued to pound away at the city defenses.

Back at the Indian front, we had regrouped and began a second bombardment of Delhi.

IBT: Etruscan fell. After her 3 artillery sacrificed on our infantry, she swarmed us with wounded tanks, not losing a single battle and cleaned up with Infantry. She razed the city so as reinforcements arrive, they can simply focus on killing all the wounded English units.

Turn 9 (1859 AD): Rome trained a Destroyer, started an Infantry(4). New Athens trained an Artillery, started an Infantry(5). Lahore constructed a Library, started a Factory(17).

We killed a couple English invaders but there were plenty remaining. I did one more round of drafts, using our core cities that I had been trying to avoid disrupting.

IBT: At the ruins of Etruscan, Vicky counterattacked, killing 2 infantry, losing an Infantry of her own.

Turn 10 (1860 AD): Neapolis trained a Destroyer, started an Infantry(7). Bombay constructed a Lighthouse, started a Taoist Temple(23).

Vicky had 4 destroyers on our southern coast but they're split up. Outside of Pisae, we had her outnumbered, 5 to 2. So I attacked her ships. Can you believe we lost all 5 attacks? I suck.

At least I fared better cleaning up the English invaders that I allowed to capture and raze Etruscan. I suck.

Our force has been regrouped in India and is ready to re-take Delhi -- not sure they can hold it, though. Did I mention I suck?

Here's The Save: His_Loneliness_AD-1860.CivWarlordsSave Have fun!
