PH18: We Hates You'se

well, that's what i thought re: barbs, BUT:

a) as fox mentions, iron should be going real soon, and
b) chariots get their bonus vs attacking axes so if we can get two warriors and a chariot as temporary defense, i tihnk we'll do okay.

i would also seriously try and take back london. If we can draw out that spear when our chariot is healed nearby, we could take out the wounded spear with our warrior (he hopes), and then send our chariot in. worth a try anyway...

after all, it's only emperor

and have "fun" at the academy fox ~ don't get caught in the holodeck with your pants down again :p

The only way we're going to be anything like a force in this game is by taking a chance and settling the iron at this point. As pholk says, two warriors and a chariot should do it. Iron being hooked up is a priority.

The axe should wander over towards London I think in an effort to retake it. Once the iron is hooked up we can attack with swords; then we're sure to get it back if our teammates don't first. Then we should settle towards the centre if we can.

If we can do all that we might (might) be back on track...

axe? we don't have no steenkin' axes . . .

i think my plan of a warrior adn chariot *should* work ~ of course, provide the barbs don't build any units yet.

i think they only way to take it for ourselves will be pre-axes. just keep moving that warrior back and forth from the grassland to that hill and the spear will keep popping out. you have 2 or 3 turns for the chariot, then it's ours ~ trust in pholkhero

Played a relatively short set.

Turn 111
Settled Nottingham at the location of the settler. Chose a Library as first build since Body and us will be completing for the cows. Stop both worker builds in York and head straight for Iron.

Turn 112
London now has an Archer. Spearman & Warrior. Plus, there are roads everywhere so now the defending spear can take us, if the AI is smart enough to do so.

Turn113
As predicted, spear moved out to defend. So instead of retreating to grassland I move to hill in hopes of winning or at least severely damaging spear so Chariot can mop up.

Turn 114
And our warrior is dead. Chariot has > 90% odds so I take a chance. And Mr. Spearmen is dead.

Turn 115
Chariot get Combat I for his troubles.

Turn 116
Only 9% odds of chariot to take archer. Looks like we need a couple swordsmen. Oh look, a barb axeman and archer show up outside Not. Have to retreat workers from mining Iron. We have two warriors and an axeman. Maneuver London's Chariot to try and steal worker. Math is completed. I set Sailing so we don't have to build a road to have that Iron.

Turn 117
Oh look, another set of barb axeman/archer. Yes, that makes two pairs. Archer is best defender of 1st pair so I attack him with our chariot and win. Whip another chariot in York.

Turn 118
The axeman attacks and kills the chariot. An archer attacks and is killed by one of our warriors.

Turn 119
The heavily damaged axe attacks and is killed by fortified warrior. :D Nottingham survived.

Turn 120-121 ZZZ

Turn 122
Sailing finished. Set slider to 0% and jump on board with Body/Bissy on Masonry. Body has an axeman outside London. :p Hopefully he attacks and kills archer so our chariot can mop up warrior and take city back.

Turn 123
Axeman moves into position. Wang builds the Pyramids.

Turn 124
Both Bismark & Body's troops go right by London. Looks like we are going to have to wait for a couple of Swords. There are 2 more axes outside Not. Luckily our two chariots take care of the problem. Workers finish road on Iron so now we have that. And now London has 2 Archers and a Warrior. Masonry completed without our help.

Nice pics, Dragon. So we have one warrior left at nottingham? Better get better defense there before my set. I'm in way over my head with this game. :)

Any thoughts on tech path?

I hit enter and Boz and Boud went Archery. Fox suggested that we probably don't need it since we have iron hooked up.

HBR? We have horses in York. MC/Machinery for xbows?
edit: you need archery for xbows :smoke:

nice turns, all. I don't think we should waste too many more units to take back the city. let's focus on more settlers, i think, now...maybe 2 more?? metal casting? hmm...dunno if that was the best, i might've gone up to construction or towards CS but either way works for now.

Having a complete 'mare here. Wasn't possible to take back London, because the time I got there, there were FIVE archers defending, and 40% culture. Given that all I had were two swords, two axes and two chariots, that idea got abandoned very quickly.

On the plus side, we did get another city.

Here's the save; full report to follow.

Well, overall this went fairly abysmally...we're going to die, possibly quite soon.

First of all, I decided to have one last go at trying to take London back. I figured that this was the only way we would be any kind of a factor in this game - if I didn't do it soon, someone else would; possibly someone from another continent, which wouldn't be good.

So I upgraded a warrior to an axe in London

1upgradeaxe.jpg

...and set about sending a little expeditionary force; enough to take out 4, maybe 5 archers.

I decided to heed pholk's advice about settlers; seeing as whipping was out in York for a while (28 turns of anger when I started), it had to be chops:

2chopsettler.jpg

Then my force got to London:

3london.jpg

...oh well. These guys will live to fight another day; possibly against Shaka quite soon.

Meanwhile, Monty's been busy (I actually thought about sending a force down here to deal with this city instead - maybe it would have been a good idea):

4busymonty.jpg

Settler paid off - here's our new city that I squoze in:

...and some more overview shots:

Hey, we're 4th in approval rating!

I can't even begin to think how we're going to get out of this mess. MC came in last turn, and I've not selected anything else for research; I'm completely at a loss.

Okay, I played a quick 10 with (hopefully) nothing of consequence happening to us. Just about the only thing I did was this...

construction0000.jpg

I figured you just can't go wrong with catapults. Anyhow, it'll be in in about 11 more turns.

Just for sh*ts and giggles, I checked the diplomacy screen, expecting to see naked hatred from all. I was quite surprised.

mansapleased0000.jpg

Mansa pleased? I thought Pholk hardwired the relationships? Hmmm...It still didn't stop jackass from from redding out everything in the trade screen though. Go to war against Roosevelt? We just don't like you enough. Jerk.

Really though, aside from letting Mansa irritate me, just about all I did was hit enter and move workers around. I built a couple more cottages at Nottingham and then moved one worker over toward Hastings. Not sure what to do with him there, so I'll leave that up to Fox.

Toward the end of my set, two disturbing things happened. First, Monty decided to militarize:

montyOR0000.jpg

But that fire was soon quenched the very next turn when WWI broke out between Asia and the Americas.

war0000.jpg

Second disturbance happened at the same time. I'm not sure what a Goth uprising of axmen means. It's been too long since I've played Civ.

Are we hosed? I don't see much fog of war near us, but London has a nice paved road and only about three tiles of Germany to slug through to get to York. I'm sure Fox will save us though.

He's dreamy.

good sets, guys...the titanic is almost bailed out.

fox's dreaminess aside, maybe we *should* restart after all? I'd be up for that? votes??
