[GS] Phoenicia Discussion Thread

So if the Palace remains in the new capital after one reconquers their old capital, why do people assume Phoenicia won't keep theirs when they relocate?

I really hope this question is brought up.

I think we can ask questions if we are on the stream? It’s definitely one to ask because it would be very powerful if she could have a palace in multiple cities. It would give her multiples of almost every yield and autocracy would potentially be too strong?

They could balance this with some harsh scaling for the capital move.

In the video, it kind of looks like the palace disappears from the Civ it moves from though?

When someone conquers a capital currently, the Palace moves to the next best city for the "Current Capital". So the palace will move as normal with Phoenicia.

The real question is... When you run the city project to move capital when your capital was conquered; do you move the "Original Capital" from under your conquer's control? Undoing their domination with the city project? Or will it just move the "Current Capital" only in this scenario?

Also an interesting question! I would assume the latter?

Where do you see this? Tyre didn't show up again.Gen

Yeah there's no question about the new capital receiving a Palace. We saw it in the video.

I just wonder if you keep the old Palace. I assume they normally retain it because the Palace provides Amenity and Housing, and thus losing it could be bad for the city it is in... or just for flavor.

This could either be a hidden perk that they allow Phoenicia or a balance concern that they mitigate. The former would basically make the city project effectively provide Palace yields for the city for all time, and the latter would imply it's a special case where Phoenicia loses its Palace and so players would have to be careful not to overpopulate.

I will have to say that if you keep the Palace, they would really nail the "shifting center of the Phoenician city states" which historically constantly shifted from Byblos to Sidon to Tyre (and back and forth and back and forth) and then Carthage.

Your question about moving the conquered capital is pretty interesting though.

Ed confirmed in a correction that the Original Capital is what Dido moves.

Are they doing a Phoenicia livestream demo today?

Finally made it through 37 pages (~20 of which were back-and-forth between "supercharged powerhouse" and "meh tier" :D), so there's not much to add. If nothing else, I think Dido will at least be fun to roleplay with all those trade routes and Wisselbanken/Arsenal of Democracy. Also, that healing bonus will make their cities an absolute pain to capture in multiplayer, although land invasions are mostly affected only after frigates.

I would actually wish they took it a step further and actually gave you the entire writing tech. (not sure it's possibly in the game code if you don't have pottery though).
I tried it and it works just fine.

Unfortunately, the way unit modifiers work, I don't see how UUs would be able to keep their special abilities upon upgrade without significant coding changes.
I'm not a master coder, but couldn't they handle this by copying the unique ability to a promotion and giving it to a unit upgraded from a UU, something like "if Unit_Upgraded_From=Bireme then give Unique_Bireme_Promotion"? Would make some OP units for sure, like Eagle Warrior.

I still think promotions should stay when upgraded. There could always be exceptions for particularly broken ones.

Bireme will be very effective but keeping them around at the age of Caravels just for trader immunity is ultimately game-y.

Hahaha! I think this thread might have broken the record for the word(s) “Supercharged”

I’ve loved the debate though. She’s been a bit of an onion and her usefulness has been uncovered layer by layer, but I think she’s definitely my first play Civ.

And I looooove that Atomic theme. The music in Civ is something that is almost always astonishingly good

Yes making all the unique abilities a promotion instead of a function of the unit itself would allow for all abilities to move with the unit as it is promoted. It would be as simple as just having all UU start with promotion that is not a part of the promo tree, then it would stick with them forever. However, it is pretty clear that the core design of the game was to not have this, and it is unlikely they would want to change that (because as you mention that is a huge buff to any early UU).

As much as i can respect the latest Art-Staff work done for that new Dido.. i somewhat preferred the Civ5 version which was "sexier" and relatively more inclined towards realism.
Anyone else has the same feelings?

Ah, the "angry girlfriend" theme, a classic.

I feel it is Medieval. The bass viol is playing.

Your'e right, I was behind the live stream! Forgot I paused for a bathroom break
