pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America

The pledge is stupid. When you say "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America", you're pledging yourself to a bloody flag.

We used to have to say it in elementary school. We stopped. Most of our classrooms don't even have a flag.

The pledge is stupid and unamerican. My kids have to say it every day in public school. The should be reciting the bill of rights. I suspect that your love of the pledge is inversely correlated with your knowledge of that document.

is this directed at me? because if so i do not love the pledge, i dont even say it i just stand up out of respect, maybe you should teach your kids their rights instead of telling me i know nothing about it? hell if you knew your rights you would know that your kids wouldnt have to say they dont even have to friggin stand up , can you not read because i said that same exact thing in my last post?

the flag is SYMBOLIC

you've never used cash ? wow:eek:
Only when I have to - such as some tipping situations. Not really because of the mystic messages, just like most Christians wouldn't consider their personal use of a debit card as a slap in the face to God.

you are most certainly not worshiping a flag when yo pledge allegiance, the flag is merely symboliv, and once again you dont have to pledge allegiance, you dont even have to stand up during the pledge but most people seem content with pledging anyway.

Hey, plenty of other idolatrous stuff can be considered "symbolic" in an apologetic response. Doesn't change the fact that it's still idolatry.

Worshipping? I thought i was just pledging allegience...
Yeah, you're pledging allegiance (e.g. worshiping) to something other than the Almighty.

@ hossam, my comments were general not @ you.

and I don't get any more excited about the pledge in school than some of the silly dress code and playground rules, there are all sorts of dumb things in the world like the pledge. I told my kids they don't have to say it if they don't want to but it is already bad enough that we are athiests. They lie about that to their friends out of peer pressure.

Yeah, you're pledging allegiance (e.g. worshiping) to something other than the Almighty.

have you ever heard of prioritizing? for example you could prioritize your alegiances like so:
1)god
2)my family
3)my self
4) my country( this is where the pledge comes in)

I said the Pledge of Allegiance when I was in Boy Scouts. I liked it, gave some liturgy to our patriotism.

where do you live?

Yeah, you're pledging allegiance (e.g. worshiping) to something other than the Almighty.

Why in the world would you equate pledging allegience with worshipping? I swore an oath of allegience (I suppose you could call it that) when I joined the Marines in the 80s, and while I surely think highly of the Commandant, I sure as heck don't worship him, nor the Commander-in-Chief, nor my nation.

1)god
2)my family
3)my self
4) my country( this is where the pledge comes in)

1) me
2) my idealogy
3) those who I care for (family, and noth many more)
4) my various groups
5) my nationality
6) the rights of others

it was just an example, in the sense that because you pledge alegiance to a country doesnt mean your are forsaking god.

I know, but I'm an atheist, the whole god part was introduced by Eisenhower I believe, not too sure about that.

No, no one can 'make' you say the pledge in the US, but you can be coerced.

In 11th grade, a friend of mine moved to a rural school east of Cincinnati. He was in a rebellious phase and refused to stand for the Pledge. His homeroom teacher actually took him outside to 'discuss disrupting the class' and threw him up against a wall.

When I heard about this, I refused to stand for the Pledge was well. I also went to a very conservative school. No one said anything... but I made a lot of enemies.

Ironic thing being that teacher was someone who's most patrotic action was paying taxes. Brett actually lost his hearing in Iraq 2 years ago.

When I went to school in the US they never seemed to do a very good job of explaining to kids that the pledge isn't mandatory. Arsehole flag-humping nitwits.

I don't consider pledging under social pressure, nor creating such social pressure as particularly patriotic. People who get in an uproar about others not saying the pledge need their head examined.

This isnt an uproar about people not saying the pledge now is it?

The uproar, if any, is pretty much one sided in this particular arguement.

Dont want to say the pledge? Fine. But dont infringe on those of us that do indeed wish to say the pledge.

So atheists should get their heads examined because they get in an uproar with the mention "Under God"?

Precisely so.

It's idolatrous, actually. You're worshiping a flag.

Saying the pledge isnt worship. Not at all.

There is nothing wrong with the pledge. People who get in an uproar about it need their head examined.

I fail to see how a little bit of patriotism hurt anyone. Kids should be raised to value our flag and our nation. Not to piss on it.

The pledge is stupid and unamerican.

Oh please. You couldnt be more incorrect.

My kids have to say it every day in public school.

Yeah, and I am sure it is just ruining them isnt it. I feel so sorry for you kids.

Maybe your kids arent the atheist you are. Lots of kids of atheists end up religious.

And Cubsfan godwins the thread.....it only took 3 pages.
