Poland should apologise for starting the Second World War?

He just took it. :p

Hitler didn't demand anything from Russia

Sarcasm.

Seriously Hitlers so called promises and modest demands were worthless. From hes "peace in our time" to hes "non aggression pact". Hitlers designs for russia were clear enough living space for germans, enslavement of slavic races and extermination for undesirables.

But actually now that i think about it, Russia escalated the war, Poland was fighting off Germany for quite some time, and would've continued to do so for a while longer if Russia had not intervened. Perhaps by then, France and England would've sent some aid to Poland or drained out more of Germany's military on Poland and thus a weaker invasion of the Benelux and France would've followed.

I really don't think so. France and the UK showed no intention of helping Poland, they didn't even plan any serious attack.

That the USSR invaded Poland after Germany did was almost inevitable. The alternative was to allow Germany to take it all. Hell, I know that when I'm playing Civ4 and other player invades ans seems likely to take a small state between us, I will either help it or take a piece of it to move the border further away. I think that is a very common strategy in the real world.
Given that Poland didn't trust either Germany or the USSR enough to ally with either, it was doomed when war broke out. The only alternative was getting invaded by both! Why they didn't saw it and sought an alliance as a lesser evil? I guess that beyond very reasonable mistrust there was also a nationalist "we are great and need not ally with our hated enemies" mindset causing the rejection of such a solution.

While I completely agree with the first part, I do not with the "we're great" part. Poland didn't think it could win a war against Germany alone. But it knew that USSR won't attack it alone, and hoped that Germany wouldn't as long as France and UK were on its side. Poland simply didn't want to engage in any war. Not against Germany nor against Soviets.

What's most worrying about this is that it is Russia's defence minister. If Germany was acting in defence of Poland's aggressive refusals, then I hope this guy doesn't take any 'defensive' action himself.

Never mind...

It was inevitable, you're right, but for another reason - the soviets and the nazis agreed to a partition of Poland in their infamous Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact.

Is this a joke?

According to the logic of the essay, the Jews should apologize for not leaving Germany before WW2.

In 1939, everybody understood this. Non-agression pact was attempt to buy time.

What's wrong with defence minister? Just wondering.

If that is this guy's conception of defence, as in, Germany was defending itself against Polish aggression through provocative refusals, then the world is less of a safe place. It is probably not a good idea to have him in charge of Russia's 'defence', if that is his opinion of what defence is.

This is just messed up. Is there a lot of polophobia in Russia?

Not really.

I think there's a bit of hostility towards Poland, although the recent events made Estonia and Georgia as well as western Ukraine
go higher in the ranking of Teh Enemies of Teh Motherland.

Still, under Putin the national holiday was changed to the liberation of Moscow from polish hands.

And I guess it is sort of flattering to Poland, because Poland isn't really important for a long time.

Yet, recently, being in Paris, I've participated in a seminary by a russian scholar, Alexei Miller, and he talked about 4 most important events that shaped russian nationalism in XIX century. According to him, these were 2 polish uprisings, the Crimean War, and freeing the serfs.

If the Russian posters in this forum were a representative sample of the Russian population, then yes.
Haven't seen here any Russian polonophob.

I'd recommend you to read at least first post (with quote) in this thread, not only title. Try to find something about defence minister and Polish "aggression"

The two countries aren't exactly getting along very well, and haven't been since the end of the cold war.

1. We joined the E.U.
2. We joined NATO
3. We support the pro-West part of Ukraine
4. We supported Georgia
5. We're talking about hosting a missile defense shield which Russia opposes
7. A lot of Poles haven't forgotten Russian domination of our country for 50 years following world war 2
8. Russia sort of views Poland as a "rebellious young brother"
9. We make better vodka

Agree with 1-7.
8. Can be applied to Ukraine or Belorussia, but not Poland or Baltic states.
9. Disagree strongly! :)
