As always, I'll be going for an underdog: put me down for Serbia!

There isn't write antwhere that new players can't take important or powerfull nations...If the new player do well is good for everyone, if he doesn't do wery well...good for everyone except the new player, because the nation will crash and be destroyed within a little number of turns, and other players can grab some territories from him...isn't it?

Except that a bad player in a superpower is in a perfect position to screw over his allies and puppets as well.

I played my first NES as the People's Republic of China in the Cold War and I did fine. Some of the ppl who have taken the superpowers appear quite capable from what I've seen.

Yes; as said, it is a question of competence first and foremost. However, there are many sad examples of unskilled newbies ruining things for everybody else.

Neat. That actually fits in what plans I have quite well. It's not Great Enterprise if uppity peasants don't get in the way.

Now all we need is someone to take Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and we will finally have realized Alex's dream of forcing a mod to spend the entire update just on China!

In other news, I'm going to exploit the vagueness in the timeline to declare that the leader of the Chinese proletariat will be (is?) Chen Duxiu.

But see that is where I disagree.... I am not a new player, your defenition may be different, but ultimatly it is all up to the mod.

Is this in response to me? If it is, I would like to kindly point you to following statements:

I believe it was indicated at least once that you were not included under the category implied.

germanicus12, no one is attacking you, to my knowledge. You'll have to point it out to me if I'm mistaken.

Let it be loudly proclaimed through the streets of New NESopolis that no one has yet spoken up who considers germanicus12 a new player. Therefore, that discussion is over.

As for the relevant discussion, of course its about competency. The idea isn't to discriminate against foreigners (but whats wrong with that? :p); but I would like to know how a new player is to know that he is competent before he has ever played a game? It's just safer to encourage (because only Mods can really force) new players to take smaller nations to start off with.

So, yes, of course there have been people who have taken large countries as new players. The most recent one that comes to my mind is Perfectionist as the Norse Empire, which was decidedly impressive. There have also been many more counter examples. Its not really that important of a discussion. It's been talked about before and nothing ever happened.

My one attempt at modding has taught me that player competence can have huge effects on a game. Inexperience among players of powerful nations can change the direction of a game dramatically. It can allow weaker nations to become more powerful and provide humorous moments too. Leading a powerful nation can be a very quick learning tool for those who have not lead such a nation before. I think Nuclear Kid, who lead Spain in BirdNES, learned a lot in a short time and is a better player for his failed efforts. Spain's loss was the gain of several other nations. For me the most important characterisitics for powerful nation leadership are:

1. Ongoing involvement in the game; powerful nations demand regular and obvious participation. No part timers or those easily discouraged and prone to quitting.
2. Making a real effort to understand the rules, the game setting, and how to do things.

Players who have shown those qualities should be allowed to play any nation they want.

By fine you do realize you include genocide and massacres of the minorities right? :p

I would be interested, but the great conspiracy of my Irish-Southern-Californian-British teachers prevent me from joining :p

Bird, do I fit your categories? :(

I think Flavius should be Britain.

He'll either step up or be ousted by popular opinion. Not every government has a great leader all the time. A bad PM might be in control for 4 years. Or he could pull a Putin, come out of no where and emerge as a heavyweight on the world stage.

It's silver bloody 2039. Do you have any doubt as to whether or not he would class genocide of uppity minorities as part of "doing fine"? :p

“The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy, to drive him before you, to see his cities reduced to ashes, to see those who love him shrouded in tears, and to gather into your bosom his wives and daughters.”-Genghis Khan

No NES is complete without wanton destruction, and massacre.

A bad PM would face his government dissolving and backbencher rebellions - its not like the Presidential model where your stuck with a guy for 4 years bar impeachment. Bad PMs are corrected for, but alas by the same mechanism crazy bold thinkers are restrained.

Has anyone taken Russia yet?

@Dachs: your economy centres are wierd and japans economy is completely crazy.

That didn't even make sense given the context.

My point is it isn't the scale of wanton destruction, it's how effectively its used at creating suffering, chaos, and advancing your agenda.

ok, internets is finally back to stable (with a bit of damage already done, but o well), so I can give this NES my all :D
