Prices are insane

If it's as bad as everyone is making it out to be, it'll be on sale within 2 weeks of launch for 15 bucks.

Consider this: It’s possible to buy a highly-rated course on Udemy that could change your financial trajectory forever for less than $15.

(Yes, most courses on Udemy are trash, but there are some gems available.)

I have 1700 hrs on Steam. I’ve played hundreds of hrs on my Switch, and easily 1000 hrs on my iPad. So I’ve even paid three times for the same game across platforms. Let’s round off to 3000 hrs. I don’t even have to present any calculations to prove that those hrs came very fairly priced.

A weekend ago I took my 90’s classic Mercedes with a thirsty V8 under the hood for a joyful drive. I spent about €100 in petrol alone. A few hrs of fun.

Gaming is one of the cheapest form of entertainment apart from maybe reading books.

I’m still working on my A-Z Deity challenge in Civ6, I’m about halfway through all the civs.

Like, the price might be worth it. Is it high, yes. The DLC is probably going to be released for everyone to buy at the same time as the Founders edition gets them unlocked. The real problem here is that there are two personas with unique bonuses that are locked behind a 60 euro jump from the base game. The Founders edition is also time limited to 28 of February. And there is no word if the Founders Content pack will ever be available to purchase for anyone after that point. As it stands, you have to pay another 60 euros just to ensure you get access to all the gameplay options. Not just cosmetics.

From the steam page:
"Each persona offers a new variant of an existing leader, including a different outfit and background for that leader, new gameplay bonuses, and an alternative agenda that reflects a different side of their personality! The personas included in this edition will be revealed at a later date."
"Expand the strategic horizons of your empire and enjoy more options for your reign with Sid Meier's Civilization® VII Founders Edition! This digital-only edition is only available until February 28, 2025—get it now before it's history."
" • Founders Content Pack, which includes:
- 2 leader personas
- 4 profile customizations
- 1 fog of war tile set
- 1 Founders palace skin"

The OP for the thread was not complaining about the base game cost. They complained about the $100 and $130 cost for the upgraded versions. Thus, Sherlock was right.

As I already pointed out, once you compensate for inflation, Civ VII's Deluxe Edition is cheaper than Civ VI's Deluxe Edition was.

I don't care about the cosmetics bonuses, but I am curious about the personas and the extra content packs that those versions include.

I need to read through the contents again, but each of the deluxe and founders packs have roughly 1 major DLC included, plus a few extra little pieces (like the personas above), plus other stuff. I have a hard time seeing myself wanting to spend 30$ extra for those pieces, when I felt like even in 6 the smaller DLC packs with a few civs were more in the 5-10$ range?

I think I'll likely get the base game, and then just wait for those extra packs to go on sale to buy them individually.

It is a lot, but then I think of how much it costs to watch a movie. I wonder how many "movies" worth of time I spend playing the average civ game.

I could afford to pay $300 for a game, let alone $70.

My experience of Civ6 is not making me enthusiastic though - it's spent the majority of the time I've had it being unplayable. I admit, while I'm more optimistic about the mechanics, I'm less than eager given my experience with Civ6.

Insane as in insanely low or insanely high? It's almost as if insane is an inaccurate way of describing something.

I assume the strategy is to get the price insensitive customers first and get the price sensitive customer later with a sale.

As often they are using 1 to 1 conversion for Euro prices, so it's about 10% more expensive in Europe considering actual currency rates.

I don't think these prices are out of wack, if that's what anyone means by insane.

The one criticism I can agree with right away is that it's reasonable to want to know what any given DLC that you're getting folded in to the price would cost otherwise. Some people (including me) may buy regardless, but I don't think it's great to sell DLC as a package without revealing what the other options are. That is definitely trying to capitalize on FOMO.

My computer is 8 years old, so what will it cost me to upgrade to be able to play this game? (Actually 9 years old when the game releases.)

It does seem a lot but when you think about time spent playing it’s got to be one of the best value things around. Movies cost 30, lunch cost 20, an hour indoor rock climbing 30, a trip to the zoo 40 just for entry etc etc. You got to support what you love or maybe it goes away.

I operate under the model of $1 per hour of play makes a game's price worth it. Civ games, every single one, has been worth many multiples of what I've paid for them. So for me, $130 is not an issue at all as I can guarantee I'll put in another thousand hours on this game.
That is exactly the way I see it, too. My Steam counter for Civ6 says I have currently 15801 game hours. This number is quite high, I know, but after what I've already seen on August 20th, I am totally, absolutely sure that Civ7 will give me the same amount of gaming fun that Civ6 did. This is just the kind of computer game that I enjoy the most. And so I would buy it for almost any price, because in the long run, it is worth it for me.
