Pride Week in My Little Town, and Why I Won't be Going

No one really cares about people being gay and it's coming enough there's nothing heroic about it.

This maybe happens where you live.
For example, as per several polls, Spain is one of the most LGTB friendly countries. However just this week media has reported at least two homophobic attacks.
There is a party in the Spanish Parliament that claims that gay people need a treatment and that there is no place for love in homosexuality, because it is just vice.
Not to mention Spanish church's representative's statements.

This is happening in Spain, an apparent LGTB friendly country.
Sadly, still there is a lot of people, even in "first world" countries, that they do care about people being gay.

I just googled homophobic attacks in NZ and came up with 2 recent court cases. Some people in NZ do still apparently care enough to attack others based on their sexuality.

Sure it happens, go dig up noal assaults to put it in context. You're still probably more likely to get punched out for not being gay.

Gays make up 4% of the population here. I'm sure there are more than 50 assault cases here in NZ.

If you do that you're also going to get prosecuted for it.

I can't tell you NZ is perfect, we have a lot of social problems, alcohol abuse (in one of those two cases), domestic violence.

Google's not much help.

Unreported might be 7 times higher.

Extrapolating from a small sample size though and they didn't specify what type of crimes. I had an Xbox and PlayStation stolen couple of years back but we reported it. Waste of time except for insurance purposes.

What on earth are you talking about?

Gays make up 4 to 5% of the population so you would expect them to make up that % of overall assaults roughly.

If the % is more than that you have a problem, if it's less than that being gay makes you safer.

He we have different categories of assault and hate crime laws. Assaulting a women for example is a more serious charge afaik than common assaults. Hate crime charge is also worse.

NZ has jackasses and bigots of course, legally band in general I would get were one of the better countries to be gay in.

Google Fu tells me we're in the top 11 gay friendly countries on the planet.

It sounds like they were going to be at this parade :)

So do you think straight people are targeted for attacks due to their sexuality?

Does rape count?

I would need to see some figures, as I said being gay might make you safer as it can be a more serious charge. Outside of liberal Europe Canada and NZ are the most gay friendly countries. Is it 100% safe no.

It's not acceptable behavior, you will get prosecuted if caught. Realistically that's probably never gonna change. I got told 25 years ago my favorite uncle is gay, if he is afaik he is in the closet but it might be a generational thing for him. (he's in his 70s).

Unfortunately here you can get done over for very stupid reasons. Mostly booze related. We drink to much (having just had 3).

I don't think rapists really care about the sexualities of their victims.

Women are targeted way more than men.
Just checked our laws technically a bit ad hoc. NZ judges tend to fairly sensible but hate crimes as such generally means stiffer sentence under existing law (assault or whatever).

The seriousness of the assault, mitigating factors etc are taken into consideration.

Quite a few things are legal in NZ but a still a bad idea. If you walk down the street in a Nazi uniform and get taken out the judge won't be that sympathetic vs beating up a gay for no reason. That's probably jail time

Getting in a fight or roughed up might not even get reported.

To be fair, "women" isn't a sexuality. I want to say it's a sex, but I'm not sure if that's allowed in 2019.

Are you drunk typing these last few posts, speaking of alcohol abuse?

You're still probably more likely to get punched out for not being gay.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say no one in history has ever been punched for not being gay, maybe unless they were purposely making a fool out of a gay guy by pretending to be gay first

I think he's more talking about random punching. Not all gay men that are punched are punched because they're gay.
Some are just dicks. Just like straight guys. If I'm mistaken, you can ignore this.

No in a perfect would you would still expect gays to make up around 4 or 5% of perps/victims. That's the % of the population.

If people are targeting gays specifically that number will be higher. Sure the occasional one will get assaulted or whatever for being gay. It's illegal and enforced.

NZ is fairly peaceful, one of the least corrupt countries in the world but bad things can still happen here. We have the odd neo Nazis, plenty of white trash, plenty of idiots and drunks.

Gays getting the bash I would think is rare here. Sure there's probably low level harrasment in place like bars etc. It's not perfect here by any means.

But you're completely ignoring the fact you said, "You're still probably more likely to get punched out for not being gay," above, a comment that seems ludicrous, and now you refuse to say what you were talking and seem to be trying to brush it under the carpet instead.

Yep. I don't go to bars etc in certain NZ cities.

If I get drunk and stagger into town the odds of me getting assaulted go up dramatically.

In the two examples posted above it seems they were targeted because they were gay. People responsible are getting charged.

See our crime a d punishment thread lol. Yes I believe in punishment.

Main point is it's not acceptable behavior.

It's because if you punch a gay you're gonna get the book thrown at you.

They stopped doing gay parades because it was kind of a bad PR move here and caused problems and they kinda turned into sex parades for the more flamboyant members which actually annoyed the other gays.

In NZ how you are dressed matters much like the rest of the world. NZs fairly liberal but not to the extent of naked people parading down the street, bottles being thrown and all round general drunkenness.

A local pornographer had his staff join in riding motorbikes naked in the parades. The council's just started denying consents.

Oops looks like they're still doing them.

You've sidestepped the issue - again! You still haven't addressed your bizarre comment of, "You're still probably more likely to get punched out for not being gay." You're just rabbiting on about general social mores and standards in New Zealand. But you still - and this is the THIRD prompt - explained your bizarre comment, specifically.
