It is not the people who don't see a problem with gay marriage but don't care enough to vote specifically for that who vote against it. They just don't vote, leaving those who oppose gay marriage as a majority of those who decide the outcome.

Or, as mentioned earlier, they say one thing to a pollster, but remain against SSM when in the privacy of the voting booth.

Not really, no. Either choice has the same effect.

But the motives behind those actions are different. Person A abstains from voting because he has a bad case of flu so he can't bother to go and vote, person B votes against gay marriages because he thinks gay people are icky.
