IIRC, every 50 turns, you receive these all game long.
Why? To feel empowered with pride, compare to other nations (even though unmet) on various criteria.

This one is power: more precisely soldier count (look for "soldier" in search bar of your browser).
Don't think power is a relevant thing btw because it's bogus. Soldier count mixes potential source of power (certain acquired techs, city population, certain buildings and wonders) to raw power coming from units.

Usually I ingratefully ignore those "people's"s great work. You may be the lowest in all those pretentious lists but still crush other AI just because they're idiots.

I think it's randomly picked from a list of important historians. I remember all the way back to Civ1 (Civ2? it was the long long ago, anyway) I'd have Gibsbon tell me I sucked at tech in 3000 BC and then have Herodotus tell me I sucked at tech in 1900 AD.

Mel Gibson? Yeah, he made apocalypto but that doesn't make him an historian.

Uh wait, that film went after CivI.

Edited that just in time...

Thanks so much, guys. :goodjob:
I have been confused about this for a long time.

Gibbons ? Why ? What about parrots ? :mischief:

Not this thread, Adam. Silly, silly, silly. Get on with it. Get on with it!

All joking aside, will colonies trade away all of my techs that they get when they are created? Can they?

Sure they can. They work like vassals.

I already own Civ 3 and 4 on Steam but I was thinking of picking up retail releases of them both in order to have a cd backup for if steam ever explodes / to look good on my shelf / to get the manuals and tech tree charts.

Does anyone know which of the currently available releases have full manuals etc.? I see there is a single release of "civ 3 complete plus civ 4 complete" on amazon.co.uk. That one even mentions that it may not have the full manuals in its info. What of the civ 3 complete and civ 4 complete in separate releases that amazon.co.uk sell though? Do they still have full paper manual ?

The Civ4 manual is useless and, as I recall, the Civ3 one is no better. So don't make any buying decisions based on them.

As for Steam, I wouldn't worry about them going belly up. If they do, the rights to their products will certainly get transferred to someone else.

Note: the final release of Civ4 BTS does not require any DRM of any kind.

I have purchased the Civ 4 complete edition via the empik online store ;) and sadly there was no paper manual in it but that is just a minor issue since I figured out everything on my own ;) Sadly I don't know of retail edition which includes the manual.

So how do you keep the city manager from reassigning your worked tiles? I can't tell you how many times I've stagnated a city at it's happy cap, only to notice a few turns later that big red frown:c5angry: because the city manager decided to change citizens from the mine to the pig

This is actually very easy to achieve , just don't run city governors (thay can be switched off by a button in the city screen) Do the job Yourself (especially under caste system). If You have many religious theme wonders it might be appaling to get profit from them by priests in Your cities but always keep in mind the Great Person probability factor ;)

When AI offers city for peace, what's the criteria it uses, is it culture?

We can look upon criteria used by AI in the game script( "if->than->else" rule. Tachy probably can answear that  ;) From my observations it is rare for an AI to offer peace by giving up a city (it is just me :mischief:) I have found that city-trade is mostly overlooked by AI and not considered a valid option in negotiations therefore I would assume that there is no hard script for it (if I'm correct anyway) Please correct me if I'm wrong ;)

Well if it wasn't coded it could hardly be a part of the game, wouldn't it? :) City trade per se is actually non-existent: you cannot sell a city to an AI for gold, nor can you buy one, but you can gift a site under certain circumstances, or the AI may offer you a city as a "sign of respect" (a city that either has no culture in it or has more of your culture than his) or offer it as part of a peace deal.
