Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

started a thread about this, but maybe it belongs in here (oops :))

Hi everyone,

Great forum, seems like a lot of people really know what they're doing. And I thought I was good for being able to beat the game on Noble . I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of an ABC's guide of tile improving as at the moment I usually just put my workers on auto, which seems kind of noob. I'm looking for something that discusses the advantages of cottages vs farms, mines vs windmills, etc, when you want to use each and why. Thanks!
What you want to look at instead are some articles on city specialization. Tile improvements are relatively flexible; for each city, you want to choose the tile improvements that will best support its specialization. A city with several riverside tiles could, for example, become a specialist city (mostly improved with farms and possibly windmills on the hills), or a production centre (mine the hills, put watermills on as many riverside tiles as possible, workshops on the others), or a commerce city (cottages everywhere possible).

My own Beginners' Guide (link in my sig) has a section that provides an introduction to city specialization, while there are articles in the War Academy that go into more detail.

another question,

is it possible to beat civ 4 (the original, no expansions) on deity? ive seen people do it but only with heavy usage of vassals, espionage, etc

Yes, see the games in the Hall of Fame.

http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/

There are a couple of easy ways to do it, apparently (bit too cheesy for me so I haven't done it)

Quechua rush on a tiny map
Permanent Alliance with a strong civ who does most of the work
Manage diplomacy very carefully and win culture or UN route (although this is still very hard) - Liz or Gandhi are best at this (oh, and it's vanilla, Saladin is very good too since he has Gandhi's traits from warlords/BtS)
Start in the industrial era and build nothing but tanks (and buildings to make tanks faster/better) - Asoka is a good choice for this.

Will adopting theocracy prevent religion spread if I have no state religion? I have a game where I'd like to adopt it for the diplo bonus with 3 neighbors, but the world religion hasn't spread to me yet.

Yes it will prevent religion spread.

Yes. You can also spread any religion with missionaries while in theocracy. EDIT: But no one else can do that to you.

I'm fairly sure Theocracy can't stop the random spread of different religions that occurs normally through trade routes. It only stops Missionaries from spreading different religions. At least, last time I checked... I could be wrong. :)

I believe you're wrong. :) It stops all non-state religions from spreading (unless you do it yourself). Period.

Can I sell my map for gold? And if so, is the AI silly enough to buy the same map every few turns?

Kewl, thanks.

The price the AI is willing to pay for your map is directly proportional to the difference between your discovered area and his.

Is this information about size of discovered area available to the human player somewhere?

I don't think so. But you can ask the AI "What will you give me for this?". They do seem to come up with a fair price if they have enough gold, which is different for each AI. Also, if the AI is getting close to paper, they'll still buy the map. Also, obviously, don't start giving away or trading your map if you're getting close to circumnavigation.

You can, of course, look on the minimap to see how much of the world you know about, but I don't think that's your question.

If I attack an enemy in a third party's city with artillery, will the collateral damage hurt said third party and thus count as an attack? Or will that collateral damage be limited to just my enemy?

Damage only affects those you are at war with.
