Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

You are correct, Roland. I started another game and it worked and allowed me to build them even with Scientific Method. My main game did not allow me to, even after I took away the tech, exited WorldBuilder, then went back and added the tech. Neither time did it work, so it appears that I will be spending some time in the Organized Religion civic.

He's a useful fellow :goodjob:

If you're willing to mess with the world builder in your main game, then you could try adding and removing the Meditation technology. It is the technology which originally allowed monasteries. I don't know if it will re-enable the monastery or whether once a building has become obsolete, it cannot become functional again. It's not an option in the normal game as normally buildings don't become functional after being obsolete, so it's not clear how the game will handle it.

What does the civilopedia tell you about monasteries and scientific method in your main game? If it still tell you that the technology obsoletes monasteries, then apparently the changes cannot affect your current game.

Good luck.

By the way, organized religion is one of my favourite civics in the unmodded game, mainly for its production bonus when constructing buildings. The ability to build missionaries without a monastery is a nice extra.

I have a map question. I'm a veteran of Civ II but new to Civ IV. I'm in the middle of one of my first games and just discovered my map (the "balanced" option in custom set up) doesn't wrap around like a globe. Instead it's a flat map and that's really no fun.

So I decided to start a new game and make sure I selected a wrapping map, but that option doesn't exist! Can anyone explain? Please don't tell me they canned that feature in Civ IV...that would be a serious downgrade.

Don't worry! :)

Go into "Custom Game" in the Single Player menu (instead of "Play Now!"). In the Custom Game menu you can see how each map type you select wraps around. If you have patched your game, you should see three options - Flat (no wrapping), Cylindrical (wrapping East-West) and Toroidal (wrapping East-West and North-South). Some maps may not have all options available.

Thanks but no luck. All I see is the Civ selector at the top, with the map choices, game options, and victory options below. There's no option for wrap types. You mentioned a patch I should download? Where can I find this for Mac?

Try the firaxis website (www.firaxis.com I think). I'm not sure if there's a separate patch available for Mac or not, as I've hardly encountered any Civ4 players on Mac before, but you could check.

I am also using a Mac. Assuming you are using Safari to get here: Go to the Site Navigation at the top of any CFC page. Pull down the Civilization IV menu. select Reference from the menu. One of the articles shown will be the map reference by Sirian, "Civilization IV Map Scripts Guide". It is excellent and gives you the low down on all of the vanilla verison maps, including how they do or don't wrap. Most wrap east to west. A few also are north to south. Some don't wrap at all. I usually use the fractal map which wraps east to west and has uncrossable ice at the poles.

That is true, you may be having a map type that does not offer wrapping. I believe maps like the Great Plains do that. Some offer complete wrapping E/W and N/S, that is quite interesting to play, I recommend doing it at least once on a small map just to experience it. I am surprised that you have such a problem because most of the ones I have seen have wrapping.

To reply to Roland about the Monasteries, I undid and redid Meditation and it had no effect. Civopedia shows that Scientific Method does not nullify the monasteries, so that obviously did work, just something is set into the running game that prevents them from being built. It works in the new games.

It's probable that each building gets flagged obsolete once you discover its obsoleting technology and that this is stored in the savegame. Apparently, reinventing the technology doesn't remove the obsolete flag. It was worth trying it though.

Good luck with your game and any further modding that you try.

Got a stupid question here :)

I started playing Civ a week ago, and hopefully I will get my first noble win with my current game. I'm playing vanilla Civ. Victoria on standard map size, continents and normal speed. The year is 1120AD. I started on one continent together with Napoleon (pleased towards me, only negative is border tension) and Frederick (hates me, as I have gone to war against him two times). I have founded taoism, but not converted. Napoleon on the other hand have. As me, Frederick got no state religion.

Well, I have also just found another continent with Washington(confucianism), Tokugawa (judaism) and Peter(buddhism). They are all annoyed by each other.

Score:
Me 1183
Tokugawa 823
Washington 823
Napoleon and Peter got around 750-770
Frederick 215

So there is one nation I haven't met. I don't know if he is on the same continent at Tokugawa&Co or got his own island somewhere.

But what next? Washington offers me dye for fish, what should I answer? Deal, negotiate or No? I'd really would prefer not to deal with anyone before I have explored the continent (and met the last civ), but since Washington approched me I have to answer and if I tell him No, he will get angry, wouldn't he?

And what should my general strategy be? Any golden rules when approaching new continents/civs this late in the game?

Take the deal if you have extra of fish. Fish is what you would be giving up right? If not then it would be extra dye. But you're not getting anything out of the extra so better to make friends and gain something that you don't have by trading.

If you decline him, it might be a negative relations point.

I have a few questions of my own:

How do I convert to a state religoun? I have researched the required techs (although not the first civ to do so) but for some reason it won't let me convert in the religoun screen. I can't figure it out. How do I convert?

Also about maps: What generated map selection will give you a map set up most like Earths? Continents or that one that starts wit a T (I can't remember the word)?

you need to have the religion present in at least one of your cities. Religions spread on their own through some thing similar to trade routes or through missionaries. If you don't have the religion you cannot convert.

Terra will give you a new and an old world with all civs starting on the old world. Continents will give you a couple (usually 2) continents with civs starting on all bigger landmasses. A real earthlike map is not in the mix...
Look here for most map types explained.

Firstly, no question is stupid here, so don't worry. :)

Civs will not get annoyed with you if you refuse a trade offer with items on both sides of the table, so you need not worry at all. They only get annoyed if you refuse a deal where they are requesting (or demanding) items only from you.

In any event, the deal is probably beneficial for you to accept though, since you're getting a happiness resource in exchange for a health resource. Unless you're really high on happiness this should be a good deal for you.

There's no real 'general strategy' for meeting civs on other continents, but it's usually a good idea to start making trades with them after meeting with them - Open Borders are a good start. Resource deals, technology and map exchanges can follow too.

What is the best type of unit to use against archers?

Especially archers defending a city? Swordsmen?
Swordsmen if there are only Archers in the city. If there are any Axemen, or if the city has the ability to rush out Axemen (access to Copper), then you're far better off attacking the city with Axemen yourself, since otherwise your Swordsmen will become mincemeat quite efficiently.

Of course, Catapults are also excellent if you have the available technology for them.

Hello. I purchased Civilization IV Gold today and I had a few questions. I've never played a Civilization game before.

Ok, Gold is of course suppose to contain Civilization IV and the expansion pack Warlords. Ok, when I get the game going, on the main menu, it only says Warlords. Is this suppose to happen? Is it Civ IV and Warlords combined and just say's Warlords?

Also, the instruction manual says it's suppose to let me choose the tutorial in the main menu. The tutorial option is not there. Only Single player, MP, and so on. It's missing the tutorial. Is there something wrong here, lol?

Welcome to Civfanatics :band:

Gold does indeed come with both. However the autoplay option, i.e. when you put the disc into the drive, will only load Warlords. For the original game (aka Vanilla) you'll need to use the shortcut it should have made for it or localize the .exe file it installed. Only Vanilla has a tutorial...
