Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I am playing Thomas' War 3.5a. I am in the industrial era around 1840-1850 AD. I had built a LONG time ago the Apostolic Palace. The religion was Judaism and a few turns ago I had adopted Free Religion. I went back to Judaism and now I can't ask the other Apostolic Palace members to adopt Judaism. (I had asked them to adopt Free Religion after two other civs adopted it that were members.) The adopt religion feature is not red because it does not show in the diplomacy screen in the first place. So how do I get these other civs to adopt a religion?????:confused::confused:

Thanks Roland. I suppose it's difficult because I have to predict what the other civs home plotgroup looks like. I never made any use out of the trade groups display in the world view. What's the difference between dark grey and light grey?

The trade groups display is not exactly the same as the 'home plotgroup' as introduced by Dan. The main difference are the visible water tiles not within your cultural area which you might be connected to through coast travel or ocean travel available through different technologies. And as explained by Dan, all the tiles of the 'home plotgroup' of a connected non-hostile civilisation are also part of your 'home plotgroup'. And all the visible tiles which can be part of your trade network according to your technology are also part of your 'home plotgroup'. So a home plotgroup greatly extends by exploring or connecting to another non-hostile home plotgroup which isn't true for the trade group display. Just closely observe the 4 rules set out by Dan for which tiles are part of a 'home plotgroup'.

In the trade group display, the dark tiles are part of your trade group and the light ones aren't. It's somewhat useful for determining the level of connectivity of your empire and seeing if your entire empire is connected. It's not that useful for determining the home plotgroup.

If this mod is like the main game, then there's no relation to the Apostolic Palace. It's just that a civilisation using the civic free religion can't have a state religion. So you first have to get them out of the free religion civic to get them to adopt a certain state religion.

Been playing too much Civ Rev lately, so I am confused.

Within each city, how can you allocate "Trade" between beakers and gold? Is using the "Emphasize Research" or "E Commerce" buttons the only way? Or is there another way to allocate this income?

Hello everyone!

I just bought the Civ IV Complete Pack (much like many other new players I'd imagine) due to the great Holiday deal on Steam.

I'm looking forward to becoming a part of the forums here and learning about all the intricacies of this giant game. I'm more than happy to delve into different threads to find the answers to my questions, but I have just a couple before I start to play the game.

I've never played a Civilization game before, (I've been playing Starcraft for the last ten years or so), so should I begin by playing the stock version of Civ IV, or should I start with a mod?

Second, if I do choose to play through first with a mod, which mod should I pick? I've looked at the mod section of the forums briefly, and the Fall from Heaven mods are obviously popular. I realize this may be based on what I want out of a mod, and I guess I could best answer that question by saying something that isn't too hard for a Civ IV beginner.

If I choose a Fall from Heaven mod, is there a point in using the first mod and not the second? This seems like a silly question, but I'm not sure if using II gives you I as well.

Finally, I installed Beyond the Sword, (I read on Reddit that installing BtS automatically installs Civ IV and Warlords), so do I launch Civ IV, Warlords, and BtS all through Beyond the Sword?

I'm counting on conquering the steep learning curve slowly but surely just by playing and using the in-game tutorials/instructions. I assume this is OK?

Thank you so much for any help I get in advance, this is game looks great and I can't wait to start playing!

hello and welcome. I was in your boots a few weeks ago. although, I played Civ 3, so maybe I had an advantage over you?

have you ever played a Civ game before?

in not, then Step 1 = play the tutorial

in general, everyone plays the Beyond the Sword expansion pack. it has the most enhancements, and really offers the complete game! tons of extra leaders, and a sweet espionage system.

make sure you 'Check for Updates' the first time you play BtS and CivRev. your Vanilla Civ should be fully updated out of the box.

enjoy man!

after you play the tutorial, and play the game a bit, you should read Sisiutil's basic strategy guide. it will help a ton!

I assume you're asking about the Civ IV game, otherwise you're in the wrong forum.

You can't allocate trade route income directly; it all goes into the commerce pool of the city and is then allocated from there according to your civ's overall sliders, which you'll find at top left, towards research, culture, and espionage, with anything left over being converted into gold and going into your treasury.

Where can I find the BUG mod? I tried to search it, but it's referenced too much so a ton of other forums come up.

Hi.

I've been looking for ways to purchase Beyond the Sword online via download (my local games stores no longer stock it), but I've never bought a game online before and am a bit wary of fake websites, etc.

Can someone recommend a site where I can download it?

PS I'm assuming that I'm not breaking any forum rules here, as I want to download it legitimately via credit card purchase. I'd rather do that than order it from Amazon (a process I am also unfamiliar with, and also I don't want to wait that long for delivery).

PPS What happens if my PC crashes during the download? I am of the understanding that they give you a receipt number so that if the download fails you can just start again. Is this correct?

--------

Any help would be much appreciated. I really want to play with some of the added leaders and Unique Buildings, etc. Vanilla is getting a bit stale.

Steam has a very good deal currently - until January 3rd - (see the main page for the link) and since its complete with all the expansions that can be expected all problems I have with them regarding compatibility are moot.
Generally I'd recommend direct2drive.

Edit: if its just BtS and you have Civ4 as a CD version my advice is: either do not buy a download version or buy the complete edition (in that you buy Civ4 and the expansion as a download version) or if you absolutely must buy a download version for BtS and want to install it with a CD version of Civ4 do buy from direct2drive its the only vendor where chances are higher than 50% that it will work.
That said: 14$ for Complete are a really good deal ;)

Thanks for the advice. I'll try direct2drive.

If it comes down to giving money to those *****s at Steam or giving up Civ4 altogether then I'll find another game to play. Any company that installs resource-hogging background processes on my PC without asking, that I then have to manually turn off every single time I startup, will never get a single cent of my money.

Steam can shove it where the sun don't shine.

direct2drive promise that it works IF Civ4 is patched to 1.74 before you try installing Beyond the Sword - and it seems to do in most cases - but the digital distribution of this game has been so mishandled that even that is not a guarantee - but at least they give you their word and you can demand a refund if it doesn't.

Go to Amazon and have them ship you one of the complete editions. I've found the downloaded games just tend to be borked.

Hello All, new member here.

I run CIV4 Plain Vanilla, with the latest patches installed. Would someone be able to direct me to the best scenarios for my setup? On Civ2, a friend and i loved playing the WW1, Giga-map WW2, and Age of Discovery scenarios...typically we love to play on the largest map possible @ marathon speed.. any ideas?

I ask because with all the different versions of CIV4 out, it makes it difficult to figure out which version a specific scenario was created for..thanks in advance.

what are the requirements to build the Forbidden Palace. and I mean BESIDES the 7 courthouses, which I more than have.

I want to put the FP in a recently conquered (former capital) city. but, it won't let me build it yet.

does the city itself have to have a Courhouse?

Yes, it needs a Courthouse.

^thanks.

Q: Does influencing Civics against Spiritual AIs even do anything? Can't they just switch right back?

Hello, got a couple questions.

1. Say a Mechanized Infantry was defending a city with 100% defense. Does this mean the unit would have double the strength, a total of a whopping 64, which it will probably take two Modern Armors to defeat?

2. My last game was Tiny-sized. I'd thought there would be three civs, but it was only me (George Washington) and Kublai Khan. After I start pumping privateers to hold him down, and when they start attacking -- nothing from Khan.
It was only Kublai and I/me. Does anybody have any justification on how Kublai was quite unintelligent at that time?

1. Yes. that is why you want to bombard the defenses to zero before attacking.

2. What level are you playing at? At Settler and Chieftain, the AI is pretty passive. At Warlord it is more active military-wise but still not very aggressive. At Noble and above they get progressively more pushy.

Unless the Spiritual leader built the Christo Redentor (and they do have to seem an odd predilection for doing so), they must nevertheless wait 5 turns to change civics again.
