Normal. And only Time victory is off.

Well, then, I'm all out of ideas.

What does your victory conditions advisor screen show?

Can you post screenshots or a save?

He PM'd me. He's playing on Normal and it's 100k to Legendary culture on that speed. Unforunately, he was planning on 50k. Sorta screwed his game up. :(

Just by acident, are you playing with the "no espionage" option ticked in and using 3.19 patch?

Why do you ask this? Does this setting do something to the culture victory? The reason I ask is that I detest the espionage stuff. So, in the game I recently started, I shut it off. I am thinking of going for a culture victory. I am playing 3.19 patch.

Mucho benefits. You'll receive a diplo bonus for being of the same faith, they'll actively spread your religion, and once you use a prophet to build the shrine of that religion you'll receive lots of cash.

Yeah, Open Borders are pretty much a priority early on. Its even worth offering small gifts to elevate the AIs attitude at first encounter, so that you may be able to get an agreement in place. If not right away, so at least ASAP.

Its also easier to be on the good side of new acquaintances before you choose a State Religion. The non penalty of not having one outweighs the eventual bonus of sharing on - not to mention the penalty of not sharing one. Sometimes I will put off choosing one before I've entered in Open Borders with all the top Civs.

Also, if the AIs haven't met each other yet, they can't be enemies - yet, right? So if you initiate contact with each AI before they do, there's a good chance you get Open Borders with all of them. Also, you can trade techs with all of them and monopolize on your Tech lead by trading the same Tech to all of them.

The attitude bonus is very helpful, especially early on, because this pretty much establishes the relationship before any negative modifiers come into play. This is however only useful if your going to maintain good relations with the AI in the long run. As a rule of thumb, you don't loose anything by having friends early on - before you get your strategy together. Then you can screw your future victims over.

The trade routes are the important thing, though. And if you have Open Borders with several rivals, the game will automatically pick the most valuable routes. So, even if every new trading partner holds the promise of even greater yields, some are still better than others. Once you figure out who's a good trading partner and who's not, you can pretty much end the agreement with the lesser ones. The once you wanna keep in the long run are the rich and advanced Civs, preferably on another continent altogether. And the more exclusive trade rights you can get, the better for you, since the game isn't assigning that particular Civ's trade routes to the wealthiest city in the game, but rather to one your own cities, period. If you can establish trade routes to Tokugawa, for instance, those can be rather lucrative because you're likely to be his only international trade partner.

One thing to remember though, is that the other Civ needs to be connected to your Trade Networks in order for these trade routes to get connected. You should nevertheless establish the Open Borders treaty ASAP, because the earlier you get it the easier it is. (You might be able to trade with Civs that later become Furious with you, simply because they don't wanna break the deal and lose the trade with you!) Once the necessary roads and seafaring technologies are in place, your trade networks will get hooked up automatically. The AI more than often will build any required roads, even inside your own borders!

I don't use that particular option myself, because it will screw the whole culture system up. I'm also guessing that the culture levels for cities will be altered, because you will produce so much culture.

Stealing Techs with the help of a Great Spy unit (and a boatload of regular ones) is very effective, by the way. I tend to use it so much its almost an exploit. :D I really should try another approach - for a change.

Indeed, culture wins with no espionage checked are very hard since the culture thresholds are doubled with that option. This is done because espionage points are turned to culture instead making culture a bit easier to get than normally, but this doesn't even nearly double one's culture output since the EP-"culture" doesn't go through % modifiers IIRC.

Hello everyone, is there a way to disable the voice that is played when you finish researching a tech? While it was very cool at the first game, now it's starting to get annoying;)
Thanks!

in my recent emperor game i built the un while i was still small in pop and land. after two wars i had the biggest pop and land, isabella on the other continent was second. when the diplomatic victory vote came up, i won. totally unexpected. because izzy voted for me, instead of being nominated herself. charlemagne, the other nominee, had a smaller pop and land and wouldn't vote for me.

i always thought the nominees for diplomatic vote are the builder of the un wonder and/or the first / second in pop. so i was expecting izzy as a competitor.

could somebody please explain this?

thanks

Was there a change in population like a voluntary vassal (master gets 50% population of vassal counted toward victory) or perhaps they were close and one civ whipped themselves out of the running.

had to check it, since i did not follow the game closely. i was preparing an invasion force.

izzy had hammurabi with one city as a vassal. and almost 2 times the share of vote than charly + maybe 15 - 20 % more land.
charlemagne and me had no vassals.

and yes, i wanted to be sure, the un has been build in my cap.

still i dont get it. what the heck - i won :D

Yes. 3.19 and i disabled the espionage option. I guess this has something to do with my problem? is that maybe coz the espionage points in this case turn into culture points so i have to make extra effort beacuse of that?

I think someone recently posted that "espionage off" doubles the culture you need for Legendary cities.

Yes, it does.
