Random Rants ΟΔ: broken record

Did that. About the same time I had the measles.

Learn to flame, or don't bother trying.

My employers are, as far as I can tell looking at my pay stub, engaging in petty wage theft and I'm not going to do anything about it.

Because polio had a mortality rate that was orders of magnitude higher than the routine childhood diseases like measles, along with a vastly higher rate of lifetime effects. Might as well say "polio, common cold, what's the difference?"

But your argument didn't hinge on mortality or anything like that, it hinged on measles "happening to pretty much everyone" and being "just not a big deal."

Mortality wise, polio aint that deadly. Certainly a lot less than measles. Only 0.5% of polio cases result in the characteristic muscle paralysis, whilst 70% of all polio infections are completely asymptomatic. Though the mortality of measles seems to be even inferior, it is also a lot more infectious and easy to catch, being airborne and all. You catch polio by being in contact with contaminated feces.

90000 people died to measles in 2016 after an 84% reduction since 2000... Thanks to bloody vaccines. Sure most kids make it through alright, especially in developed countries, but you wouldnt scoff at it if you were the lucky one who got offed by it.

Tim, are you sure you want to go with that?

"Sure, it's preventable, and sure, a vaccination round can mostly eliminate the risk of outbreak, and sure, an outbreak can and will kill dozens of people, but that mortality rate is more of a rounding error than something to really worry about."

I saw a trailer on Youtube for this upcoming movie, VICE, and it exerts a certain fascination. It looks like it will be a good film. That said, it pissed me off, because it seems to portray people whom I think are war criminals as kind of like idiot frat boys or something. Like imagine a World War II comedy-drama with Will Ferrell as Hermann Goering, Steve Carell as Goebbels...it just doesn't sit well with me.

Maybe the film will be more subversive/serious overall than the trailer is making it out to be.

It's from the makers of The Big Short, so I have hope in them.

The Big Short also had its shortcomings- it did a terrible job of portraying the depth of evil represented by the bankers. At any rate, the "stupid frat boy" approach is much more appropriate in the case of the financial crisis than in the case of a crime that resulted in something like a million deaths.

Shouldn't that be up your alley? Everyone's a war criminal in the eyes of Lexicus. :mischief:

Kidding, but is that really problematic? I doubt war criminals saunter around rubbing their hands together over being war criminals. They are rather human, unfortunately.

Well, I'm not sure what the overall tone of the film will be - it might be that my concern is misplaced. I thought that the segments in the Men Who Stare at Goats that concerned the Iraq War did a good job of showing the ultimately criminal and fundamentally abhorrent nature of the enterprise. If I do end up watching it, VICE will be the first new (new as in, was released recently, not new as in watching for the first time) film I've seen since The Force Awakens.

No, it wasn't mentioned. :p

But was almost certainly noticeable. People get scared off, that's their issue. Just keep on being beautiful and smart and eventually someone who can appreciate that comes along.

Never dumb down. It's no fun, and doesn't work anyway.

Being sick makes me so hungry. Every hour my stomach is pretending it hasn't been fed in DAYS. Settle down, buddy.

Stomachs are wise, but not smart. Being sick has probably depleted some particular thing that your body really needs, and your stomach is wise enough to know it. Unfortunately, not being smart it is trying to solve the problem by just consuming everything it can convince you to lay hands on. Pop a massive dose of multi-vitamins and it might calm down.

How dare you make me read something reasonable with my very own two eyes?

Isn't the answer to that generally petty time theft or petty real theft?

Tim's idea reminds me of how many garbage scavengers soak the cardboard they sell to recyclers because the recyclers will pay them very little and by weight because they know the scavengers soak the cardboard beforehand because the recyclers will pay them very little and by weight…
