Pretty cool that Vancouver requires you to apply for the right to vote by mail in local elections.

And yet Valka insists that Canada is definitely not America.

I somehow, to my great consternation, got food in my sinus cavity. This condition lasted approximately 6 hours and was mildly torturous. Symptoms included a terribly runny nose, unreachable and unsoothable pain, and blocked breathing.

The source of this, in most cases, is the usual defective swallowing "went down the wrong pipe" followed by some sort of "polite" stifling of the ensuing choked coughing fit.

I saw an ad on youtube for a microwaveable frozen grilled cheese sandwich. Is nothing sacred anymore? Is putting some cheese between bread too complex for modern man?

We don't all have an inner Arthur Dent to summon, but even so I agree with your sentiment. People just don't respect cookery anymore.

I was in my first ever car accident this morning, on my way to pick up my prescription from my pharmacy. I suddenly saw a pickup truck stop in front of me, and I pressed my brakes but my car wouldn't stop in time so I bumped into him. His rear window shattered but otherwise there's no real damage, my car is perfectly fine, but I'm really shaken up. I was given a citation for "fail to stop within an assured clear distance", and I don't know what that's going to be like. My nerves are rattled right now, I'm taking today off from work to cope with my stress.

I'm glad you weren't hurt. In the scheme of things it isn't a big deal, as rattling as the experience can be.

If you have an insurance company, call them. This is a simple civil matter which should be settled with little fuss.

As for the citation, decades ago, I received my one and only citation for a moving violation. The process then in my state is that before court began, I "posted bond." Because I was going to plead guilty, I could just walk away. My bond became my fine. Bring cash; my court did not take checks or credit cards.

Another tactic is to show up for trial. Half the time, the cop won't show up, in which case you move for dismissal on the grounds of lack of evidence.

Rear windows in Pickup trucks seem to be ridiculously easy to break.

When your Sims' lives are more fulfilling than your own ...

I gathered some new favorite words this week as well:

keifen, v. "to rail or nag in a sharp voice (in such a way as, according to the stereotype, is typical of an enraged older woman)"

röhren, v. "to vroom"

grasseyer, v. (of the phoneme /ʁ/, the letter R), "to pronounce uvularly"

All auto glass is easy to break. It has so much pre-loaded stress tempered into it that it is downright eager to explode into those little diamonds. The idea is to have to shatter pretty much instantly in a collision so there won't be any pieces around that are big enough to inflict a deep cut. Cars have been pushed further and further into safety designs that make them easier to damage; sacrifice to protect the occupants.

Speaking of which, @MaryKB make sure you get your car thoroughly checked by professionals before you say it is perfectly fine, especially before you say it in agreement with your insurance company since they have a vested interest in getting you to agree that it is. Behind the visible flexible cowling on the front there's an actual steel bumper. The cowling is designed to flex and snap back so that it won't show damage in a minor parking lot type bump, and since they are somewhat overdesigned they can do the same thing in a heavier bump that does actual damage behind it. Specifically, that steel bumper behind it is shock mounted to absorb impact and either prevent damage to the rest of the car in a moderate bump or provide the first step in dissipation in a serious wreck. If the shock mounts are damage it means your car is no longer going to perform as designed in a subsequent wreck, making you less safe...which is all that really matters, so if it needs to be fixed make sure the insurance gets it fixed.

An ill-tempered punch will go straight through any flat-pane glass on a car. When I was 14 a friend and I found an abandoned car in the middle of a remote field. Obviously, the best thing to do is to wrap up your hands and have a competition on how many punches it would take to break through the windows. Because, you know, that's reasonable and logical.

Back window was already out so it was just the windshield and 4 side windows. We both took three punches on our first window because we were a little hesitant, but when we moved onto our second we both did it in one punch. If two kids with wrapped up hands can break windows that easily, an able-bodied adult man won't be deterred at all.

The windshield was difficult, though. It took both of us stomping on it to crack it. Durable sucker. That's something you're not going to be punching through.
