Honestly, how difficult would it be to just set up some automated mail-merge thing saying "sorry, you didn't get the job"?

The problem is not necessarily doing it, but remembering it.
The last time we hired someone, all the people who were obviously not suited got rather quick an email that they didn't get a job.
Then a few people were invited for job interviews, and a few others didn't yet get anything, since they mgiht be suitable, but not the first line candidates. Not sure if the boss told them that they didn't get the job after we selected a candidate, it might just have been forgotten.

To be fair, Indeed's job board does tell me if my application has been viewed and sometimes if I've been not-selected, but direct companies, like a company web site? Never.

I fit nicely into the quota system. Now, I don't really look like a lesbian at all (so I have been told), but I make sure they know it. Not for the quotas, but I want to make sure that I don't wind up working somewhere that will give me a hard time about it.

I feel really good and I'm over my cold. Unfortunately, I'm still coughing a little bit and I managed to pull a muscle in my groin and several in my chest from all the coughing over the past week. Could have been worse though, at least my nose didn't run non-stop all week as usually happens when I get a cold. I'll take coughing over a runny nose all day, every day. It did suck coming close to feinting from all the coughing more than once though.
