Random Rants 61

Not really a rant, but there wasn't a better place for this and I don't really think it's worth its own thread:

I am seriously considering giving up my business and joining the French Foreign Legion. I love having my own business, but I want to be a soldier again more than anything in the world. It's what I feel like I was born to do. My wife's not too keen on the idea though, but she says she'll ultimately support whatever decision I make because she knows this would make me happy. She told me that she realizes that I just haven't been the same person since I left the Army and if doing this will get me out of my "funk" then she'll find a way to cope with it.

The biggest drawback of going down this road though would be not being able to see a whole lot of my daughter and having her essentially grow up without a father. From what I understand, the Foreign Legion is deployed quite frequently and they only get something like 45 days of leave a year. That doesn't leave a whole lot of room for family time.

Well if you do will you tell us all about it?

What do you know of windows update? I though you were a member of the ancient cult of Linux?
I do follow the great traditions of the religion started by the great Linus Thorvalds. As provided in the good User's Manual, of course.
Nah, I can't join the National Guard or Reserve. I'm considered too old now. However, the Foreign Legion accepts new recruits as old as 39. The Foreign Legion really is my only opportunity to be a soldier again. Plus, I don't want my daughter to be educated in the US and Foreign Legion service will grant me and my family French citizenship; which means I could educate my daughter in France. It also opens up lucrative career opportunities as from what I hear, Foreign Legion soldiers are highly sought after by private military organizations.

You are right about family though, and I have thought about that. Hell, it's the reason I haven't already run off to France to sign up.
Private military organisations? So you want to be a mercenary?

So this party kinda blew. I didn't get any like meaningful conversation with anyone.

Also I lost all my gambling credit on roulette (which took like nearly 2 hours) and didn't get any alcohol.

I kinda wish I'd gone home instead to study.

Gah!

Christmas is looming, menacingly.

Gah!

On a more hopeful note, I may be able to get a "free" Christmas Day dinner at the Salvation Army.

8 people ain't a party? Must be eight really boring people.

Well, usually, the more people there are at a party, the less people to relate to.

Expecting meaningful conversation in an enclosed space with over two hundred people is probably a bad move.

Parties are lame best is like 4-8 people just hanging out drinking and chatting, unless you want an orgy or something I dunno

False. Large parties can be quite fun. You just have to be in the right state of mind for them.

Well I hoped to meet more people from my "class" than I did. I only found 3 people in the end.

I have already spent too much money at GOG's sale, yet suddenly half a dozen things on my wishlist there are now on offer. :(

In totally unrelated news, both my GOG wishlist and my bank account are now less well-stocked.

Well if you do will you tell us all about it?

Of course. I'll probably even start an "Ask a Foreign Legionnaire" thread.

Private military organisations? So you want to be a mercenary?

Yeah. Just because I love being soldier doesn't mean I don't want to get paid well to do it.

EDIT: Should I take it as some sort of sign that the day I start talking about joining the French Foreign Legion, there is a major terrorist attack in France? If so, what sort of sign is it?

Reconsider it. War is bad. Serving your country is one thing, getting rich by being a hired killer is another.

But what if that is the best way for me to ensure my family is taken care of? Would I not be remiss in my duties as a husband and father if I didn't go down that road?

You could probably do that robbing a bank. Pays better, too.

I thought you already had a job or other source of income?
