They specifically say upcoming work trip, not holiday. The work trips at this place are almost always scientific conferences, and you want to drum up interest before so you can get the most out of it. The only social media account I have that is easily link-able to me is twitter where I talk about science meetings to try and get people to come to my poster or talk or whatever.
The point is that you're not going to be home. So if you're not home and thieves want to rob you, does it matter WHY you're not home?

This is very true, and it is defiantly the most dangerous of the things they list. My complaint is that for me and every one at my work it is also the most important one to do, so an actually useful course would have told me how to ameliorate the risk, rather than just saying "social media bad, mkay". I suppose recognising the risk is half the battle, but I can still rant.

Exactly, 50.9 Sq. M. You have a good eye for slum property ;) It is bigger than my place, but there is only me living here.

Of course I do. It was my misfortune to be treating the 200+ sq meter top floor apartment I was in until my parents divorced, as my actual parent, only to later on move from place to place. By now I must have lived in more than 12 different apartments, of various sizes and quality...

WTH up w youtube not letting us see like/dislike ratio anymore?
It was in the news. Reducing pressure something something. I do not get it myself, if people are making a business out of it they should have all the information they can get.

It's not even possible to directly see dislikes for your own videos, although iirc supposedly you can if you do stuff within the youtube system.

Bloody unapologetic slum landlords. I am getting older without owning any property, and vaguely keep an eye on possible property bargains. I came across this listing:
  • Guide Price £65,000 (very cheap for most of the UK)
  • Two-bedroom ground floor flat
  • Advertised as :
    • Readymade investment
    • Current income of £9,824 pa
    • Current gross yield of 15.10%
  • The photos show that is based on "slum landlord" business model:
    • There are people in both bedrooms AND the living room (so 3 unrelated people in a 2 bed flat). Perhaps someone is sleeping in the living room and they are using a bedroom as storage, but that makes no sense to me.
    • They have not provided sufficient furniture as everyone has to keep their stuff on the floor
    • At least one is sleeping in two sleeping bags, which indicates there is not enough heating
    • I am not quite sure what is going on on the table in the living room, it is defiantly a lighter refill canister which is a drug of abuse, I think he has been skinning up. I suspect the landlord did not give sufficient warning to the tenants before going in to take the photos, which is illegal. Something similar in the bottom left corner of the main bedroom, though it could be something legit.
    • At least two plain lightbulbs with no light shade. Just another sign of cheap landlord.
    • A curtain that looks like a sheet, ditto as above.

There is another in the news:

Landlord forced to take down ad for "most depressing" £300-a-month flat which left viewers simply saying: "F*** me"

One said they'd "seen bigger cells" - but the landlord declined to comment

The 'most depressing one-bed flat ever' was slammed so badly by furious house hunters, who compared it to 'HMP Farnworth', that a landlord removed his five adverts.
Many were furious that the landlord was demanding £300 per month as some believed the 'disgusting' room was 'windowless' from the photos taken, though it remains uncertain if there was a window.

Shocking images show a single 'unmade' and 'stained' bed against the wall next to a single socket - with what appears to be the previous or existing tenant's phone on charge and two bottles of water as they only other items in the entire flat.

Yeah. Actually, in 1999 (...), I did spend roughly 2 months in a hotel room in Paddington which was of that size. But had some more furniture and a shower. Still, 300 pounds/month for that is certainly miserable.
But it wasn't 300 pounds/month there. It was more, although I have long forgotten the actual price.

At least there was some privacy, since the room was not connected to any apartment, but those 2 months were miserable.
That is a bit of london even I know is famous for garrets. Also being so close to central london I would expect it to cost about 10 times what it would in a cheap bit of Bolton.

Yes, it was a typo (repressed memory). It may have cost 300 pounds/week...
But we are talking about a 10 sq m "living" space.

Come to think of it, it must have been at least 300 pounds/week, since I recall that then I moved to an excellent 45 sq m ground level apartment in a victorian-style building right next to the Greek Embassy, in Holland Park. And that cost barely 50 pounds/week more. Only stayed there for a couple of months as well :)
That apartment was owned by someone who worked in the hotel, which is how the move got made. It was the final trimester of my first year at University.

Anyway, I don't recall the price exactly. The next year I rented somewhere after my own research, and it cost 800 pounds/month. It was again a very nice flat, 45-50 sq at Bayswater - on the road that both tube stations exit to.

F*ck.

Just got back from eye checkup after a long time. Early stage of glaucoma. Looks like it's very early, no vision loss yet (wouldn't have found it if it wasn't for OCT), but it still means that at the very least I'll have to use eye drops every day for the rest of my life.
So you discovered that you have high eye pressure. While that is not good news, be thankful you found out early. I've been on drops for high pressure for almost 20 years. Lumigan, one drop each eye at night; timolol one drop each eye at night and another 12 hours later. It took a while to find the best combo to keep my pressure in the mid teens. Drops are just part of my daily routine. PM me if I can help more.

There's a bit of nerve constriction too, but not much yet. I'm scheduled for more exams in two weeks....we'll see how it goes.

It's just...kinda depressing, realizing that I'll be just staving off blindness for the next fifty years or so.

On that apartment business, I lived in an apartment that was maybe 100 square feet for about nine months while I was getting set up here. Given I’d just moved and
