It really annoys me when people call The Netherlands "Holland".![]()
Or the US "America"?
Or the UK "England"?
Or Eire "Ireland"?
How do you figure that?
All three have a mismatch of territories and geographical areas.
It's fine to call the USA America. Over here, it usually is called that. The Netherlands are called the United Provinces, not states, and Mexico is the United Mexican States, not the United States of Mexico. It won't cause any confusion to call the USA just the US, the United States, or America.Eire refers to the both the Island of Ireland and, but politically, to the Republic of Ireland.
Tell a Unionist that Eire is the same as Ireland, and you'll have a problem, I think.
America refers to both North and South America. Or is that the Americas?
It's very sloppy terminology, imo, to refer to the United States of America (there are other United States... well... the Netherlands were the United Provinces, anyway) as America.
Very similar to referring to the USSR as Russia. But, I'll agree, not precisely the same.
