Great question. The reason being is that they give us extra "reading days" before finals at the end of the semester, when we could really use a day off, and so they trade MLK day for an extra reading day.

I'm indifferent about it. Government gets the day off, but (at least in 2012) 70% of employers don't give the day off. Meh.
