On vacation coming out at the end of the park I couldn't pick up the 3 backpackers hitchhiking, because there just wasn't enough room in my car. So Karma gave me a pass on that one. But the one backpacker was a different story, and Karma decided to get me for not picking him up. The nearest town is some 20 miles from the exit from the park. Next park I get to, in the visitor center a woman brought her dog inside, even though that wasn't allowed, and as the park employee was telling the woman that, the dog bit me. Woman didn't even say sorry. Dog didn't break the skin, just a painful bruise. But still. But I was in Canada, and decided not to make an issue of it, which I probably should have. So move on to Bar Harbor, and here's a hint: DO NOT go to Bar Harbor on Columbus day weekend. The motels I tried to get a room at say there wasn't a room available anywhere in the county. So getting a list of phone numbers and calling around, there wasn't a place within a 2 hour drive I could get on the phone that knew of any place that had a room open. Someone suggested trying some little mom and pop motels which still exist in the area, and I lucked into one of those about 20 miles outside of town. It was tiny and the TV didn't work and it was right on top of a road that at 10pm on a Saturday night on a holiday weekend in rural Maine still had trucks roaring by at 60mph. It was so old it looked like the bathrooms had only been added on to the building years after it had originally been built.
But it was there, and it was clean. And so I had a place to stay. Next day back to Bar Harbor, because I had a free ticket I had to use for a whale watch boat. And the time on it was about to expire. But it was too windy offshore so the whale watch wasn't going out. But a lighthouse tour was, so it was that or nothing, so I took that. It was warm in town, I knew it would be cooler on the ocean. And I was dressed well enough so that I wasn't too cold, even though the wind was pretty high. But then it started raining a little bit, and I didn't have rain gear with me, or even a hat. I could go inside on the lower deck, but the view isn't as good there. Get back in and off the boat, the parking there is weird in that you can't park at the pier and take the boats out, because they set it up to give you a parking ticket if you do. So you have to find parking like 1/2 mile away. It's only raining very lightly as I walk to my car. I see a police car's lights flashing down that way and as I get close I see that the road is closed off. The wind had blown down a tree and that took down a power line and the cops wouldn't let me go down that way. All my rain gear was in the car. And that's when it
really started to rain. I couldn't see my car at that point because of other vehicles at the way, and the cop said I had to come back an hour or 2 later. So I trudged back downtown and bought a rain poncho and got lunch and browsed the shops for a while and then went back. Since I'd been on a tour I had binoculars and camera on me, and other vehicles were moved, but the cop said they had to bring in heavy equipment, and it would still be a couple hours before I could get to my car. But on maximum zoom, this is what I could see of my car:
So from there sure looked like
the downed tree was on my car! And I couldn't get there for hours yet. So for lack of anything better to do for the next few hours I took a bus tour of the park. But couldn't really enjoy it because I kept thinking of whether or not I would have functioning car when I got back to town. But Karma seemed to have had it's fun with me, and as far as I can tell the car is fine.
