Please help me understand North American bedsheet terminology.

I want to buy this.

It says it contains:
  • 1 Flat Sheet (92" X 102") 1 Fitted Sheet (60" X 80") And 2 Standard Pillow Cases (20" X 30")
The picture shows something to put my duvet in, the bedsheet that wraps itself around the top of the mattress that you sleep on, and pillow(case)s.

But when I look up what "flat sheet" and "fitted sheet" mean, they both seem to be things you sleep under. Both of them. But then what do I sleep on? Does this set not come with a thing you put on your mattress that you sleep on? That's the same colour as the rest of the set so you don't look like an insane person sleeping on a bed with sheets on it from different sets? The picture seems to imply that everything in the picture comes in the set, but the picture might be misleading.

Or do I sleep on top of the flat sheet? I mean, it's flat, I could sleep on it... I just want to make sure I'm buying a proper set with all the things i need in it and won't be disappointed when I get it in the mail and it's an incomplete set

Oh okay. That makes a lot more sense. And now that I google it that seems to check out.

So there's nothing for me to put my duvet into in this set? Just a bedsheet to sleep on, and a flat sheet to put in between me and my duvet when I sleep? If so that's good to know because that's also an incomplete set that wouldn't do me any good

So you are saying it would not be easy to find a set that contains all the things I want and I might as well stop looking? Because if so that's a handy tip

edit: Okay so when I look for duvet covers that matches this set that I want, everything that comes up is also a set. But I just want the duvet cover.

This is frustrating but whatever, back to video games for now, I will have to revisit this BS tomorrow, thanks for your help guys

IKEA is good for this. They have standardization out the wazoo so even if they're not all from the same set, it's likely that they will match.

Oh, sorry I am rather uninformed on the issue as a whole but that does seem awful at best, and unlawful at worst.

Yeah, it's part of the reason I dislike both presidential candidates so much. Neither one of them strikes me as the type that will actually stand up for veterans. I guess we're just not a large enough voting block to matter to most candidates. I just hate that all these politicians talk about helping us and doing right by those who fought for this nation, but once they get elected they turn around and stab us in the back.

Some people use a mattress cover as additional protection for the mattress (I really should, since the cats seem determined to tunnel to the other side of the world via my bed). But the fitted sheet has elastic and fits (hypothetically) around the corners of your mattress. That's what you sleep on. The flat sheet is what you sleep under. Then add blankets/quilts/comforters/bedspreads/duvet (never could figure out what that's supposed to be) as necessary to be comfortable.

Much of the above can be skipped if you adopt a couple of cats. One cat is worth a light blanket's worth of warmth, and two cats will keep you comfy in fall temperatures. Four cats means you only need the flat sheet, because it's like sleeping under a heavy quilt that purrs (or snores, as the case may be).

At least Hillary hasn't outright insulted soldiers or veterans, the way Trump has in his comments about John McCain and Humayan Khan and Khan's family.

You aren't being complicated enough. Now the depth of the fitted sheet also matters, and is a piece of information you need. So for example if you have a pillow top mattress, it is much thinker than a standard one, and you have to make sure the fitted sheet has the same depth as the mattress.

Crap, I do have a rather large mattress, and Valka, yes, I do have a mattress cover thing sitting overtop. When I bought my mattress they recommended that I get it.

Why is all of this so complicated? It's just to get more money out of me? Seriously, all I need is a couple standard things. Sleep is not so complicated. But nope, they have to make it more complicated than calculus and sex

Our resident Greek is about as Roman as I am. :)

In other news, my feet hurt from walking a lot today.

In the extent that Pessoa was right to claim that "Rome was the America of ancient Greece, and thus its misinterpretation", yes, i am not roman nor any other tribe of barbarian

I still don't know what a duvet is or why warpus thinks a bedsheet set isn't a full set.

When I say "Duvet" I mean a thing that you sleep under that keeps you warm.

A duvet (/ˈdjuːveɪ/, /ˈduːveɪ/, or US /duːˈveɪ/; from the French duvet [dyvɛ] "down") is a type of bedding consisting of a soft flat bag filled with down, feathers, wool, silk or a synthetic alternative, and typically protected with a removable cover, analogous to a pillow and pillow case.

The cover needs to be the same colour as the pillows and stuff, right? Or else it all looks silly and half-arsed. And the set I linked doesn't include a cover for the duvet. So it's incomplete.

I think what you actually want is a comforter. Duvets are usually sold without extra blankets and sheets.

Your local mall might have a shop specializing in duvets and comforters. Take a look, it might help, even if you don't end up buying from there.

Mattress covers are a good, sensible thing as they do help to keep your mattress clean and (in my case) would be added protection from things like cats' claws. They're also another layer of comfort when you're actually lying down.

Sheet sets used to be two flat sheets, one of them meant for tucking completely under the mattress and the other only partially because that's the one meant to be slept under. I remember well what a pain in the <anatomy> it was to try to get that flat sheet properly tucked, so the fitted sheet was a nice new thing... when it fits the mattress. When it doesn't, it's also a pain. So before going shopping for bedding, you should measure your mattress in all 3 dimensions - length, width, and thickness and allow for whatever amount of inches of flat sheet and blanket you're going to want to either tuck under or allow to overhang.

As mentioned, I have no idea what a duvet is and why it needs a cover. For me, bedding sets consist of fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillow case, and whatever blankets I choose to use. Way back when we used to have serious winters in this part of Canada, that would include a light blanket, medium blanket, quilt, and bedspread. Nowadays, I have just a fleece blanket and a smaller one at the foot of the bed - does double duty of keeping my feet warm and it's where the cats sleep during the day. I've got some extra blankets for when we do have seriously cold weather, like -30C.

Yes, they are trying to get more money out of you. What you described is basically a quilt with a cover. I never heard of a quilt having a cover.

Just be glad they're not trying to sell you the other three pillows (many arrangements of pillows have 5 - the two you sleep on, and the other 3 are presumably for decoration and you throw them off the bed when you want to sleep).

Do you have a Bed, Bath, and Beyond store in your city? Or Jysk? Jysk's customer service is abysmal if you're trying to do anything online or over the phone, but they do have nice bedding; that's where I bought some of my fleece blankets. I don't recommend online ordering from them, though, although I suppose not everyone has a nightmarish experience.

Try ESA, they seem to be in need of some help these days.
