The Coverage may be terrible where you live, but if monthly price is holding you back from a smartphone check out Virgin Mobile. I have an LG Optimus with them, it's no iPhone, but it's a good little phone. They also have iPhones now.

It is indeed the monthly, my parents refuse to pay for it, and the best service provider here is(Out of At&t, Verizon, Sprint) Verizon, not sure how Virgin Mobile would match up.

Virgin is pretty cool because the monthly plan includes 300 minute, Unlimited SMS MMS, and 2.5gbs of regular speed data (slowed down after 2.5gbs), all for $35. The Coverage sucks out west though.

I highly doubt my parents would switch to Virgin anyway, they use Verizon for their business... And a good data plan is like 30$ a month, and I am sure that includes unlimited text messages (which I already have ). Yeah it also sucks to live away from a big city.

Naw. Virgin is legit. That's who I use for my phone. Their service piggybacks on Sprint's towers, so check their coverage map to see if it's at all viable. I picked up on the service last summer back when it was 300 mins, unlimited text, and unlimited data for 25 a month, so I still get that price, but 35 bucks a month is still worth it. Plus there's no contract so the only price you're eating is the cost of buying a phone and you can back out at any time. The other great thing about it now is that Virgin now offers not terrible phones (when I started they only had a Blackberry where you needed to pay extra for the apps, and the LG Optimus that I have which features terribad battery life). Now they have the new Optimus which, according to my sister, is just fantastic, and the iPhone 4! So yeah, if you have the cash up front for the phone and you get coverage out there, it's a great alternative to having to pay 60-90 dollars for a 2 year contract on a similar plan (unlimited text and data[ish], because let's be honest, who talks on a phone anymore?).

Plus, the guy who own Virgin, Sir Richard Branson, sounds like a pretty cool person. I'd like to see how Verizon or AT&T's owners compare.

Sprint has it's own towers, but with Sprint, if you have roaming, you can use Verizon's network. On Virgin you can only use Sprint's towers. IIRC.

It doesn't matter for me, I'm in the same boat but I can't get any Sprint coverage at all where I live.

I get Sprint coverage around town, but once I'm a few miles away from my town there's nothing.

It's even pretty weak in town sometimes. There are some spots in my school where I can't get any coverage because I'm in the building.

Sprint's coverage in NorCal is pretty darn good, albeit with a few idiosyncrasies. My apartment and its surroundings last year had zero bars, but literally every else on campus I had full bars.

I saw this and became utterly despondent.

The scary bit:

It seems as though my long-held, deep-rooted conspiracy theory fears are coming true.
