Random Rants XVIII: It's cold as hell!

So we've been struggling for 3 months to make good on the marketing promise of a 1 November deadline. It seemed a real long-shot to make it, but we looked about to pull it off. Last Friday we had some beers to celebrate the fact we only needed about 60 man-hours, spread over 3 guys, to get the job done. Cheers all around. This morning though we get called into a meeting. Since marketing got a whiff of our progress they decided to drop an extended requirements bomb in our planning.

If I stop posting here for a while and you find an article in Reuter's Odly Enough about a Dutch Project Manager being killed by anal insertion of a fruit machine; Game Designer arrested, you can guess what happened.

What did they ask you to do, then?

As for that, well, I'm sure you can come up with something better than a fruit machine. Something that's sharp. :p

So here's a little rant/suggestion about the forums, I'd actually thought of it a while ago - who else finds it really annoying that once a thread hits page 10 (and hey, look where we are ;)), you can only directly link to the first 10 pages, and the "Last Page." I'd much rather have a "First page" and then the last 10 pages, as it would do for you inside the thread, since that's where recent discussion is. At the least, having an option to toggle or customize might be nice - this is the type of thing that heavily plagues certain threads (who wants to see page 5 of some sports thread, when it's months old...) if there already is an option I'm missing I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I believe you're looking for the Site Feedback subforum.

We're making a multigamer, 8 games. Marketing wanted 10, but were told they'd have to wait for a next release. Marketing said "but we promised the customer". We said, "than you're a bloody fool that's what you are", since we told them they could have any number of games as long as it was lower than 9 and higher than 7 from the start. Now they expect us to port 2 more games in there from the German multigamer, complete with testing and peer review. In one week.

So I got together with the programmers, asked them to 'inject' a 'feature' which would crash each game after an hour. This morning our testers 'found' this unfortunate bug, so it looks like we have to spend the rest of the week bugfixing :mischief:

So sorry those extra two games have to wait for next release :(

Fruit machines are quite big though. Should be rather painful.

At least it's not feminist analysis of international relations. Yours seems at least vaguely possible to apply to the subject matter.

You gave me a rave and made me forget my rant! :(

Actually fixed.

Cells in a colorectal tumor with mutated p53 are cancerous. A colon is made of cells. Therefore, colons are cancerous. Sound logic.

I can make one up for you :)

Heretic_Cata starts a thread how CFC turned him into a newt and no one posts "it got better"?

What kind of cultural backwater internet wasteland is this?

To be fair, it's probably the first thing many of us thought, but the thread was already locked. So rant: Busy all day and didn't get check CFC earlier to get that in...

What he hell is wrong with our culture that people worship Miley Cyrus and the like and have no clue who the great scientific minds are? How many "average" people today know who Carl Sagan was, or Richard Feynman, or Niel DeGrasse Tyson? Who knows what our scientists are discovering today, even if it does make national headlines for a moment? How many people can talk for hours about the Steelers' defensive line, but don't understand how a simple prism works? Or can recite the lyrics of ever 50 Cent song but couldn't tell you the three laws of thermodynamics? And even among the "educated," how many know anything about epistemology?

You know, I didn't recognize Tyson's name as first but a quick search revealed that I've obviously heard of him - he's famous for efforts to "popularize science" though, not a bad guy at all, but it was kinda odd for you to mention him as a "great mind" and what that implies.
